How To Get To Heaven When You Die (1 Viewer)

I have accepted Jesus's Christ's free gift of Salvation have you?
:lmao: at free gift. Here, let me put you on this planet and give you free will and reason. Im going to make the things I want you to do not so fun and the things I don't want you to do really fun. Also, to be an extra special doosh I'm going to require you have faith in me but I'm going to never appear and make a reasonable person have plenty of great reasons not to have faith in me. When you die, in order to determine whether you get eternal salvation or eternal damnation I'm then going to tally your the bad things you did based on the sins that I've identified (which I know for the most part felt natural and good) and determine whether you actually believed in me when you had good reason not to. Sound good?

I was driving through Northern Idaho the other day and seeing all the crackpot churches and signs and thought to myself ; what a great gig to get into. Put up some signs, build a building and pass the collection plate around once a week. I m a fairly good public speaker and it's not like you have to make any sense. I'm starting to believe.
I believe L. Ron Hubbard is on record as saying he wanted to create a religion so he could make money.

What do you base your beliefs upon?
That which is believable.
The Bible is believable.
Truth?

Christians who are slaves should give their masters full respect so that the name of God and his teaching will not be shamed. If your master is a Christian, that is no excuse for being disrespectful. You should work all the harder because you are helping another believer by your efforts. Teach these truths, Timothy, and encourage everyone to obey them. (1 Timothy 6:1-2 NLT)

You know, believing in a higher power isn't all that crazy. I can "get" a general belief in god even if I don't share it. But if you actually look at the history of organized Christianity and see it as anything other than a tool originally created by people to control and maintain power over other people, you're either not looking at it hard enough, or you're choosing to ignore it for some reason, or you're just not that bright.

It's interesting that you should say that because there is overwhelming evidence to support Christianity so I think that it is you who hasn't looked at the actual evidence hard enough.

This should be entertaining.

Bull#### and evidence are mutually exclusive terms. HTH

The evidence is so overwhelming that only 32% of the world's population believes in it.

If the bolded is true, then Christianity is not a faith.

I have heard much of these "Get out of hell free" cards. Do they work? We'll never know.
You can now go to confession and be forgiven for abortion. So there is that.
Hmmm. Confession is out since I married a divorced woman & the priests told me I was no longer welcome. Being a single dad < getting tossed out of club that didnt like me. I have to say I am pleased with the new Pope...he seems to follow what I was taught about how one should behave.

Francis is amazing. I wish conservative protestants were more like him.
Yeah, Francis is about as good as popes can get. It's like someone with a modicum of common sense was given the popehood (popedom?)

I keep getting Godfather 3 vibes, however, and hope he isn't making any enemies in the process.

"But I needed my ride or dies with me on the other side," Fryberg said in a text minutes before the shooting, according to police documents. He apologized again, but said "I needed to do this tho ... I wasn't happy. And I need my crew with me too. I'm sorry. I love you," the texts read.

Find a priest at another church, God will never find out.

If you told them she had never been married, would they take your word for it or run a background check? One thing that always blew my mind -- priests who would encourage people to get an annulment, even if it was a long marriage, and even if there were kids.

My mom struggled big time when she divorced after 23 years of marriage and her priest wanted her to annul the marriage when she intended to re-marry. Of course, doing so would essentially say that my sister and I weren't intended by God. She's still employed with the church so assuming she must have done it. Cool rules.

Growing up, our pastor got summoned to the Vatican for telling parishioners that using birth control was a personal decision and that people should follow their hearts. My wife's ex was allowed to remarry in the Catholic church. Either the priest looked the other way or he got a unilateral annulment and my wife was never notified. There are some priests who understand daily life & some who are sticklers for the rules (hmmm... there's an odd parallel to board mods all over the interwebs :D ).

Again, kudos to the cardinals for picking Francis.

Yes!If you believe something due to the overwhelming evidence, what you have isn't faith, it's the ability to rationalize. Faith necessitates believing in something for other reasons.
Kind of makes the religion attractive to those whose rationalization skills are lacking.

Next conversation with her ask "Mom, am I a *******?"

I try to stay away from the fringe on both sides.

From the religious zealots who strut with signs in front of the capitol building, or the more subtle ones that just give a condescending glace and mumble something about "burning in hell" - to the supercilious atheists that call anyone who dares defy science with any sort of faith "silly", "ignorant" or "nuts".

In the middle somewhere (many level headed agnostics reside here), there's good, reasonable people. Intelligent and equitable folks of all beliefs, and most can agree on one thing - that intelligence is usually hitched to the realization that they know nothing.

If it quieted the know-it-alls, I would, though I'll stick with simply bringing up a Socratic view here and there. I actually have no idea if Socrates hated the protesters on the lawn of the capital, as well, but I'll look into it.

Socrates on a lawn.

Eh, I'm already in the doghouse for asking her to stop praying for my wife and me as we struggle through the fertility stuff and, instead, do something useful like volunteer at a shelter or something.

Yeah, I can't for the life of me figure out why people think the faithful are "silly", "ignorant", and "nuts"?
