How to Wire 4 Conductor Phone Line to an 8 Pin RJ45 Jack? (1 Viewer)

I've got a 4 conductor (green, red, yellow, black) phone cable that I'd like to punch down onto an 8 pin RJ45 connector. I'd then like to plug a 4 pin phone cord into the middle of the RJ45 for operation. Is this possible? I would think all I have to do is know which of the 8 RJ45 pins to punch the g, y, b & r wires on, right? Anyone know which pins on the RJ45 the g, y, r & b wires should punch onto for phone use?

RJ11 into an RJ45 probably wouldn't work well. You can crimp an RJ45 connector onto a 4 wire cable though. Basic single line phone really only uses 2 wires, the center 2 (3 and 4) of the 6 pin RJ11 connector but as long as the jack and the cable that plugs into it use the same two wires you should be fine.

I agree an RJ11 into an RJ45 isn't ideal, but it will seat and therefore I would think it should function properly. I could be wrong though, because multiple attempts at punching down the green & red wires from the four conductor wire onto the RJ45 have yet to provide dial tone when the phone is subsequently plugged into the RJ45. I figure the green & red should be punched onto pins 4 & 5 of the RJ45 but it didn't work. I swapped the g & r on 4 & 5 and still didn't work. Tried punching 4 & 5 onto many other combinations of pins on the RJ45 as well to no avail. Finally gave up and just cut the plug off the phone cord, fed it through a small hole in the RJ45 in the wall plate, then spliced it onto the 4 conductor wire behind the wall plate. I'm satisfied for now, but would still like to know if there's a way to successfully wire a 4 conductor wire (or even just the g & r) onto an RJ45 to receive an RJ11 phone plug and get dial tone.

Thanks for your help.
