How worried should Matt Ryan owners be? (1 Viewer)

As the topic title states... how worried should Matt Ryan owners be right now? Despite what his yardage says most of it came when they game was already more or less out of reach. Throughout the first half and most of the third quarter the Falcons offense was completely shut down despite a few decent passes. Not to say the Bears Defense isn't great because it is, but do you guys think it was more of a result of the Bears D completely shutting everything down? Or was it a simple matter of Matt Ryan and the Falcons offense being over-hyped coming into the year?

I don't know that I'd think of sitting him just yet, although the game against Philly next week scares the life out of me. So should it be time to start shopping the waiver wire already to find a better option? Or do you think Ryan will pick things up a little bit?

Take a deep breath and relax. Ryan will be just fine. This offense is loaded. Matt Ryan will be a top 10 QB, and he should not be on your bench unless you have one of the elite QBs.

Depends on what your expectations were. If you expected Julio Jones to make that passing offense electric...yeah, that's not going to happen. At least not right now. If you expected Ryan to be around the #8 QB he was last year. Don't worry at all. You certainly aren't going to find a better option on the waiver wire.

Yea, I mean obviously I'm not expecting another 2 turnover 0 td game out of him anytime soon. Right now I'm kind of just telling myself "Wait a week or two for Jones to settle into the offense a little more."

My overall expectations were Top 10 QB with a big upside.

Yea, I've just been kind of starring at the WW sorted by QB. I didn't pickup a backup to him in our draft as I didn't expect to be this worried about his Week 1 & 2 performances. That coupled with a Week 8 bye I figured I had some time to assess the WW value of someone for Week 8. Right now I'm sort of eyeing up Henne, Grossman and Cutler wondering if one of them might be worth picking up and starting over Ryan for the week. Most of the other guys are being held and will definitely be dropped later on in the season (one guy atm has Brees, Stafford, Fitzpatrick, and Bradford) so he will obviously have to start dropping some of those eventually... he went a little crazy on the FA pools after Week 1.

Hmm... I was on the fence about Grossman but that is a good point. Newton shredded the Cards this week, wouldn't be crazy for Grossman to do the same.

Ive never been super-high on Ryan as a FF QB (think he is a very good NFL QB). ATLs balanced offense and Turners effectiveness has somewhat limited Ryans upside in previous seasons. When ATL drafted Julio Jones, it seemed many thought ATL would now be an air-it-out offense. I was and remain a bit skeptical that such a transition will be nearly immediate. I think this could happen, but I dont think its a certainty and I dont think it will necessarily be quick (although maybe it will be?).

I didnt have Ryan in my top 10 at QB this year, but the one game against CHI doesnt make me downgrade him. CHIs D-Line is good and got the best of ATL this last week. Better matchups and stats are ahead for Ryan. I wouldnt be too worried about him after one week (unless you truly thought he'd be an elite FF QB this year).

Have you seen Aaron Rodgers passer rating/stats against the Bears the last 3 games? They're not good. The Bears defense is a tough day for many QBs (except Brady in a blizzard...). Ryan will be fine, he simply ran into a great defense that was playing at home and that felt disrespected (Atlanta was favored going into the game) and as if that wasn't enough, Atlanta's starting center was out and a rookie was starting in his place.

Count me in the strongly "not worried" camp.

That's a good point (also one I was unaware of) about the starting center being out. The replies here have definitely eased my personal concerns a little... I mean my team was good enough to win without Ryan showing up, so I wasn't in a immediate panic mode. However, having to sit there and watch the final game on Monday night hoping that DMAC didn't put up like 200yds and 2TDs against me was irritating. Had Ryan even tossed 1TD and one less turnover I'd have been able to sleep easy without worrying about DMAC.

Ryan just doesn't play very well outside of dome staduims and when you add in a good Bears defense I expected a bad week for him and started Eli over him. Now Eli wasn't much better but I wouldn't start Ryan against any half decent defense when it's outdoors. This week he goes back indoors but he plays a very good Eagles D but I'm still starting him.

Finishes the year in Top 10 QB's.

I think Julio sets the league on fire this year. (Nears 1000 yards with 6+ TD's) He's the total package. Enjoy the ride -- and don't be shocked if the ride starts this Sunday vs. Philly as Awesome Roy covers Roddy.

I seriously hope so... I'm probably playing the top team in our league in Week 2. Pulling out a win vs him would make me ecstatic. I'll definitely need at least a decent game from Ryan to do it though. It'd probably help if Foster started also lol

Ryan absolutely killed me. In my league QB's lose 1 point per sack, 2 per fumble, 2 per int, which left me with 7 whopping points after that game. Not to mention I also started Nate Kaeding and Dwayne Bowe plus Mendenhall. What a mess!

Man... -1 for sacks. That's crappy, what was Cutler's season points in your league last year like 12? lolI feel your pain though on the Ryan and the Bowe train... trying my best not to panic on either. Bowe is scaring me because I read a lot of things before the game about people thinking his production would be significantly lower this year. Then he comes out and has that type of game. Also had Foster sitting on my bench. Week 1 was tough for me but I managed to pull through it with a win.

You should not be worried at all.....yet. That game on the road was a tough one, and the bears have a good pass defense. Ryan has struggled on the road usually, so meh. He will be fine this week.

ATL is new to "opening it up". I think combine that with a new piece of the puzzle (Julio) and they will look better on paper than on the field. Ryan is intelligent however I do not believe he has enough in him yet to put this team on his back and carry them versus adversity. I want to see more from Ryan in those adverse conditions before I proclaim him a top 10 QB.

Great performance by Ryan tonight against a VERY tough D. He looked like he was going to crumble in the 3rd quarter and was getting some happy feet in the pocket but that spectacular catch by Julio Jones seemed to turn things around for the whole offense.

Gutsy performance by him tonight and luckily the schedule gets a little easier going forward. :football:
