Huge news for Chris Harris (1 Viewer)

Pretty much guaranteed starter on the CAR roster. I always liked him and thought he was around the ball a lot in the games I watched him play. I think he will be a nice surprise this year.

:lmao: Really??I know Salley, Cooper and Minter are not world-beaters, but what exactly has Harris shown to be the starter for CAR?? Not knocking...just curious.

I watched quite a few of the Bears games Harris started last year and I liked the way he played. The Panthers traded a 5th rounder for him - not exactly a throw away pick. Minter is basically done. Cooper has never impressed me and I don't think Salley is that good. Cooper and Salley were slated to be the starters before this trade because Carolina didn't have a choice. It is just my opinion, but I feel very confident Harris will be the starting SS this year.

Here is what Fox and the GM had to say about Harris:

Fox on the trade for safety Chris Harris from the Chicago Bears: We said we were going to look for safeties. It's a need position. We had the opportunity to get a player that we liked. Hopefully, we'll get him in here as soon as possible and get him indoctrinated into our stuff.

Hurney on the trade for Harris: After the draft, we called quite a few teams and said, "If you have certain guys, certain names that might be available to touch base with us." I think we are fortunate that the Bears have a surplus at that position. They contacted us, and we've had several conversations and reached an agreement on the trade today. We think Chris is guy who will come in and compete. He's smart. He's instinctive. He's a very physical player, and we think that he will come in and help us.

Fox on what he likes about Harris: He's a young player. He does have some experience, starting 20 games. He has been in big spots, both in playoff appearances and even the Super Bowl. He's a young safety that we think has promise.

I don't think it has much of an impact on Archuletta. Everything I have heard about Archuletta so far in Chicago has been positive and he has a history with Lovie. Archuletta is probably pretty safe as a starter as long as the Bears scheme keeps him out of a lot of deep coverage getting him exposed.

The only problem with depending on Archuleta is if Mike Brown is looking like a SS in camp. If Brown is capable of playing FS full time, Arch will be starting. If not, Danieal Manning will see a lot of time at FS while Brown time at SS and Arch will still see the field but not on a full time basis. As for Harris, he is a average SS and a below average FS. He will only see major time if all else proves subpar.

Jene Jene IDP machine what's your take on this?
:excited:I don't think it has any impact on the Bear situation at all. According to team observers, no one was happy with Chris Harris in coverage last season despite a couple of flashy sideline INTs. Archuleta looks to be the SS on rushing downs and may have an in-the-box role on passing downs depending on how much Tampa-2 the Bears decide to run this year. Latest word is that Manning will still get snaps at FS. Whether he rotates with Brown or just gets a fair amount of nickel snaps depends on how much Manning improves and how ready to play Brown is.None of these guys in Carolina, including Harris, is anything special. Whomever starts, if they get the bulk of the snaps and don't get stuck in a rotation, will have value. Maybe not as good as Shaun Williams in early 2006 as none are as good a player and the Panthers should have a better LB corps in front, but potentially stable every week DB2-DB3 value.

I would project Harris a top 30 DB with upside. I think he is the best safety on the Panthers roster and will settle in at SS. History tells us Morgan won't play many games and with him out I expect the Carolina SS to put up nice stats.

I am very surprised C. Harris is getting no love. In 3 playoff games he put up 19 tackles, 1 int, 1 ff, and 1 int. That is solid. He had a few monster games starting at SS during the season for the Bears as well and over those seven games was solid in general. Do people think he will get less opportunities playing in CAR? I don't.

I have to disagree. A 5th-rounder is a "throw-away" pick, especially when you consider the Bears originally spent a 6th for Harris and have since educated him for two years. The fact that the Bears were willing to deal Harris for a 5th-rounder (despite investing a lot time into Harris' development) does not bode well for Harris' perceived value on the open market.

Harris could be a good DB2 if he's able to play in-the-box, but that will be tough without a rangy FS. I wouldn't annoint him a starter by any stretch either. He is an average NFL SS. Also, he made the mental mistake that cost the Bears a shot late in the Super Bowl. If he had played his deep-half on Wayne's TD we may all be comparing the Bears to the 1990 Giants. So I doubt Chicago was unhappy to get a 5th rounder for him.

As a Harris owner in a deep 32 team league, I'm trying to stay optimistic about his chances of starting in Carolina...however, he's not very good in coverage and makes a good deal of mental mistakes.

Carolina is probably the best place for him to try and get a starting spot.

Mean Jene - What does this do to Harris' value? how far up the charts will he shoot, if at all? I haven't followed him or the Panters starting SS. Trying to gage whether or not he is worth snagging off the waiver wire?

My impression over the last couple years has been that the CAR SS has higher value when Morgan is not MLB. I have not crunched the numbers but it seemed like the SS only had the numbers after/when Morgan was injured.
