LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) -Chicago Bears star linebacker Brian Urlacher sprained the big toe on his left foot during a 31-13 loss to Miami.
Coach Lovie Smith said Monday the status for the 2005 NFL defensive player of the year is undetermined for Sunday night's game against the Giants.
Urlacher suffered the injury in a pileup with just more than a minute left Sunday when the Bears lost for the first time this season after seven straight wins.
``He feels better today and hopefully he'll be able to feel better and be able to go this week,'' Smith said. ``We'll see how it goes with him.''
Urlacher walked into a meeting room Monday without a noticeable limp, but didn't comment to reporters at Halas Hall.
If Urlacher can't go, Hunter Hillenmeyer would move to the middle.
``Well, if we put him on the field, we'll hope he will be able to go the distance,'' Smith said of Urlacher. ``But you always have to have a backup plan. We have a backup plan at the linebacker position and if we have to go with it, we will.''
Smith said he wasn't sure if Urlacher would be able to practice.
``We hope he will be able to. I can't say right now. I know he felt a lot better today,'' Smith said.
``I think if you asked him ,he'll probably say he's planning on practicing Wednesday. Brian is a quick healer as he told me this morning. Hopefully he'll be able to go and get some practice in.''
