Now that Urlacher's dinged Hillenmeyer is the new MLB for a game or two perhaps more... Is this good or bad... the good would be that teams may run towards him more than they would Urlacher, especially with the surrounding talent? Or Bad... is he fast enough to get to the ball and get his tackles...?

I'd think it's a no brainer grab just in case Urlacher's out for a few weeks...

any thoughts?

i think i read somewhere that Briggs would likely move to the middle, and Joe/Williams would move to the weak side in place of Briggs. This would leave HH in his normal strong side spot? I could be totally wrong here though.

Urlacher has sprained big toe, status unclear

2006-11-06 15:41

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) -Chicago Bears star linebacker Brian Urlacher sprained the big toe on his left foot during a 31-13 loss to Miami.

Coach Lovie Smith said Monday the status for the 2005 NFL defensive player of the year is undetermined for Sunday night's game against the Giants.

Urlacher suffered the injury in a pileup with just more than a minute left Sunday when the Bears lost for the first time this season after seven straight wins.

``He feels better today and hopefully he'll be able to feel better and be able to go this week,'' Smith said. ``We'll see how it goes with him.''

Urlacher walked into a meeting room Monday without a noticeable limp, but didn't comment to reporters at Halas Hall.

If Urlacher can't go, Hunter Hillenmeyer would move to the middle.

``Well, if we put him on the field, we'll hope he will be able to go the distance,'' Smith said of Urlacher. ``But you always have to have a backup plan. We have a backup plan at the linebacker position and if we have to go with it, we will.''

Smith said he wasn't sure if Urlacher would be able to practice.

``We hope he will be able to. I can't say right now. I know he felt a lot better today,'' Smith said.

``I think if you asked him ,he'll probably say he's planning on practicing Wednesday. Brian is a quick healer as he told me this morning. Hopefully he'll be able to go and get some practice in.''

I would appreciate any insight into the effects on Briggs. An article from ESPN on the blogger says the following:

"If Urlacher is unable to go, LB Rod Wilson could start or LB

Hunter Hillenmeyer could move to the middle."

So I take it that Briggs would stay put? Would anyone expect his numbers to change drastically one way or the other if Urlacher can't go?

I don't believe Briggs would move to the middle in any scenario. The nature of the scheme suggests that his production isn't likely to plummet with Urlacher out. His numbers are already so solid that it would be hard to expect drastic improvement. Still, the loss of Urlacher weakens the defense so Briggs should be in the line for more tackling opportunities both from an increased amount of time on the field and from a poorer surrounding cast (less speed, less instincts, etc).
