Free internet in Florida: Comcast makes Xfinity wifi hotspots free to all during Hurricane Irma

Cable and internet provider Comcast is offering free internet across Florida through Sept. 15 to help residents and emergency personnel stay connected during Hurricane Irma.

The company is opening its more than 137,000 Xfinity wifi hotspots throughout the state to anyone who needs them, including non-Xfinity customers, it said in a news release on Wednesday.

"For a map of Xfinity WiFi hotspots, which are located both indoors and outdoors in places such as shopping districts, parks and businesses, please visit Xfinity.com/wifi," the release said.

Once in range of a hotspot, select the "xfinitywifi" network name in the list of available networks. Xfinity internet customers can sign in with their usernames and passwords, while non-Xfinity internet subscribers should click "Not an Xfinity Internet Customer."

Non-customers will be able to renew their complimentary sessions every two hours, the company said

Looks like the path change so drastically that they're saying worst case we may get a cloud or two

Stay safe everyone.

I just went through Harvey.  I have never seen so much rain in my life.

Facebook has activated its safety check for Irma.

I think my profession just dropped below the lawyers. One of the mega agents here is advertising that if you sit down and meet with them about listing your home they will donate $50 to the harvey relief fund

track looks like we'll be left with 49 states and less disputed electoral votes.  turning towards the west inland, so I think my generator won't be needed.

Lakeland (trailer) OOF

Will head to my friends house in Thonotosassa when told to evacuate.

Currently in Cape Coral helping folks put up shutters.

The governor closed all Florida public schools for today and Monday. I'm canceling our homeschool co op on Tuesday so my people don't have to wonder and worry and why shouldn't homeschoolers get a day off for a natural disaster.

Gonna make my final beer run before the fun, heading to Brew Hub in a bit to stock up...if anyones out and about in Lakeland and needs a break from the craziness, its a nice spot despite its tricky-to-get-to location.

What do homeschoolers do on a day off?  Go down to the nearest public school and sit in a classroom?

The IKEA parking garage in Doral (west of MIA) is full. Cars are double and triple parked. People are worried about flooding and wind damage.

ICE canceled a large planned deportation operation due to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. But at Rubio's new conference about Irma, he said immigrants should not worry if they see someone with an ICE jacket: "They’re not here to deport, they’re here to save lives." That sounds reassuring.

Liquor stores are shutting down tonight across the state

Most around here are business as usual until tomorrow, which is up in the air.
Maybe I misunderstood (or it was misreported), but I thought sure they said that (tonight they're closed). In any case, I'm guessing the people posting in this thread have the liquor issue accounted for already.

OP edited to change times posters last posted on this board.
At this point it looks like Charlotte will have 50-60 mph winds so there will be some damage but will thankfully it will pale in comparison to other areas.

Hoping everyone else has a safe place to ride out the storm.

We have threatened that. But no. We do a co op once a week. Tuesdays. So next Tuesday we aren't going so we can all take care of our own property damage and in case the building we meet in has no power. The kids will play on their phones.

So just like public school kids?

The western movement has canceled my evacuation plans.  It no longer seems a good idea to head to Atlanta.

I have family in the Satellite Beach area on the East coast of Florida, family in Bradenton on the West coast, and family in Moultrie in southern Georgia.

So, lots of family in the way.

Going for a beer run in Ft Myers.  I've put a hurting on the whiskey stash watching the trends move towards me.

Riverview (Tampa) checking in.
Thanks.  I'll probably do my next full update of the thread tomorrow morning, and then more often after that.  I realized I can click on the @names in the first thread and see last time everyone posted - I'm going to go by that every time unless I get PMs.

I'll also quote first post each time I do a full update while it's close or after landfall so people get a notification when I do.

I wonder if any models may walk the storm east again. This may be a topic for the other thread, though.
Whatever you want to talk about is fine, I just wanted a Hurricane thread that wasn't talking about pure catastrophe from experts outside of the path and where we could get a head count.

Henry, you are doing a great thing here!! Us FBGs here in Colorado can't imagine something like this.
