while good weathermen need some pretty crazy proprioception
i dont think that word means what you think it does.
It means exactly what I think it means. Proprioception is a person's ability to sense his body's relative position and orientation in space. It's absolutely vital for the kind of blue-screen work that weathermen do. Most of the time when you want to point at something, you just point at it. When a weatherman points at something, he has to look at the monitor, locate the object in relation to his body, and then mentally gauge the movement required to point at the proper location without any visible landmarks to guide him. He needs to be able to tell exactly where his hand is in space and exactly where he needs to move it to. That's proprioception in action.
:own3d: DAMN! Learning stuff from SSOG...and this aint even the dynasty thread. ;)

Yes, I'd do it especially if I knew I only had 5 years in advance.Knowing that you only have 5 years allows you to be more intelligent with you money. Some of these guys who start out think or at least act like they're going to play forever, like everyone's Brett Farve. So you play for 5 years, stock about a million bucks or so in the bank in that time. Since this is an average player, the average NFL player graduates from college and after those 5 years, I would be doing something along those lines or looking to getting into coaching. Very easy choice because I'm in no position to make 2.5 million in a 5 year span and then be allowed to use my degree or friends from networking during that time.
You won't make that much...Government will take 35%...the agent will take 6-8%...you will end up with 300k or so (1.5 over 5 yrs). Live on 100k and at best you end up with 1mm...not exctly a major nest egg, but not a bad start in life if you understand that you will still need a career in "real life"
Why do you need an agent if you already know you'll be playing for 5 years? Man...is this sewingguys.com or footballguys.com? I'd play for !@#$%^& free....

I wouldn't be good though....I would be average. Don't get me wrong....Gambel's grandma would get her nickels.....but for the chance to play a sport that one loves at its highest level....that to me transcends compensation.

Excellent question, Joe. I'd defiintely sign the contract.

I'd be interested as a follow-up -- at what threshold would people walk away from their current siutation to be guaranteed one year on an NFL roster? $100K? $50K? I know it depends on the individual's situation, but I'm also curious where the monetary line is to give up their full-time job for one year of glory.

Hypothetical question here. You have the option of magically becoming an average NFL player. Not Drew Brees, but not a practice squad guy. A guy that is a middle of the road average NFL player.Assume the labor situation as far as medical coverage and benefits like that stay the same (aside from the minimum salary thing)You won't be a star, but you'll start quite a few games and make a handful of significant plays over the years. No pro bowls. But you're not on the practice squad. You're just pretty much an average NFL player on the 53 man roster. You get all the perks that come with being a professional football player.Once you're out of the league, you can use any connections you made during your time or parlay any good you've done to start your next career. It has this stipulation: You will be paid $500,000 per season and you will stay in the league for 5 years. Would you do it?J
Umm yeah. I wouldn't make in 5 years the 500k in one. Money check.I currently play sports 5 nights a week for 2-3 hrs in addition to working 7-10 hrs a day. My schedule wouldn't change much. As far as my long term health, I think there are plenty of NFL players that are all right. I'd take the risk.
