hey guys, calm down.
I suspect Coughlin didn't want to play him too much as a rookie until he learned the playbook and resolved his ball control issues.
The fact he fumbled in one of his first couple of carries just gave Coughline the excuse he wanted to hold him out of some games and to use it to motivate the kid to work harder. (Yes, some coaches will do this, and he appears to be one of them)
I agree, you wont truly know what the kid can do until you play him, but here is the inherent problem in playing him if he's not ready.
suppose you play the kid, he plays 4 games averaging 110 yards per game, but fumbles the ball 3 times. The kid is averaging 100+ yards per game. He thinks he's good and wont be as motivated to fix the problem. You gotta do these things now cuz if you try to fix em later, the fans get mad when you bench someone putting up 100+ yards per game.
I'm sure this has some influence in how he approaches the situation.
