I get why teenage girls wear their sweater over their hands, but guys are doing it now? (1 Viewer)

I know it's a fashion statement for teenage girls, they think it looks cute, but I just finished watching a DLF fantasy football trade show and the guy named Russ always wears his sweater over part of his hands.  He also paints his nails, but that is a discussion for another thread.  Where did this originate, for both girls and guys?

It is no different than a Man-Bun compared to a Ponytail.  Fashion and individual statements can take all forms.

Wearing Pants below hips for "young men" was a statement until it faded.

I have not seen any guys with Sweater past hands, but I guess it is just an example of blurred lines on male/female & sexual identity.

Its fashion and music influencers like Harry Styles. Even I like Harry Styles. But you know how it goes, all this is fleeting, it will be something different a year from now. That said, the skinny jeans trend lasted for way longer than I thought it would.

Not really.  I read where lots of straight guys paint their nails as a fashion statement these days.
Hmm... I actually just googled it. TBH, I never knew this is/was a thing. I have a total of 0 male friends that do this, and I know a total of 0 guys that do this. Then again I'm 34. My initial thoughts of this, is it might not actually be a fashion statement, but more of a way to help guys get 'out of the closet'. Or as we have seen over the past 10+ years, the feminization of men.

I don't know, it seems to be an ongoing fashion for girls.  Perhaps that's true for men however.

I also googled it and read some articles about straight men  painting their nails as a fashion statement.  I can believe that.  I'm sure it goes both ways.

Thanks to Johnny U for asking the questions I have been afraid to ask on this topic.  I’m also wondering about the one odd fingernail painted in a different color, why?

LOL, seriously, where did this originate?  I get why teenage girls do it, but now grown men are doing it?

hmm.  fashion is strange thing sometimes.

I suppose girls think it is cute, but I never thought I would see the day where guys do it.

I think it's more about fashion than sexual identity, or do they run together?

perhaps this all started in cold weather climates and became a fashion.

I agree, but is it also a fashion statement for guys?

Good god, just put on a sweater and paint your nails already.

i did this. still dont trim my pinky nails, tho i dont paint them anymore. the Asian drug dealers in my neighborhood did it and i thought i was cool. used a black crayon in the boys room at school each morning until Magic Markers came out. i thought it was to snort drugs, but these were smack days and snorting was supremely inefficent drug use at a time when heroin cost more than cocaine. turns out it goes back to nail growth being a status symbol in China - the upper class grew nails to show how little they need use their hands and it became a similar symbol for hustlers.

on subject, when i was young i grew my hair (and nails) long, wore capes, heels & hats (i was in the music biz), tried mascara and realized how much hotter EVERYONE looks with it on. the world was giving me a lot of reason to distance myself from masculinity. then i got comfortable in my own skin, got my act down on how to be attractive to others and stopped most of my attention-getting devices. been a long time since i tried to look unusual but i dont mind the odd harmless fetish. a good person can present however da #### dey want. bad people shouldnt and it eventually becomes a pretty good indicator that people arent worthy/useful.

it kinda means the gist of the subtext to your op query ...

Sorry, but I don't understand this statement.  The OP was about this being a fashion statement and that I get it for teenage girls (to look cute), but I don't get it for guys and just wanted to find out where and when that originated from.

Plot twist. They make shirts you put your thumbs in to keep the shirt down over the hands
Yes, I've seen girls wear these types of sweaters.  I suppose manufacturers were keeping up with the fashion trends and decided to make it easier to do without stretching a sweater out.

ok.

"twee" means "girly-man"ish.

NTTAWWT.

This is an awfully long and inquisitive thread for a world in which bands like The Killers and guyliner has existed in the mainstream for about twenty years.

By all means, have at the topic, but it seems like the nail painting thing goes back even before '80s glam, really. It just wasn't mainstreamed with effeminate sweaters.

Oh, and it is effeminate. I don't think anybody by the wokest of woke will argue that it isn't, at least in a Western context.

yeah, part of glam - as well as Tommy Lee and the like slingin' **** all over LA

Thumb hole sweaters for sports have been around but I suppose the trend originates with people wearing oversized sweaters.  I haven't noticed guys doing this but if it causes designers to lengthen sleeves, I'm for it.

What is up with the jeans among Gen Z?  It seems like a lot of girls are wearing hideous bags of denim.  The boys now wear more slim pants. Some of them skip leg days and squeeze into skinny jeans.

I don’t watch NFL Network often and never in the morning.  I only watch TV in the evening, unless it is sports.  I might watch the NFL Network before I go to sleep at night, but I couldn’t tell you the names of any of them.

Machine Gun Kelly.  End of story.

Dude wears pink, pearls, piercings, painted nails and bags Megan Fox. Girls are intrigued and make him a sex symbol. Boys want to bag a Megan Fox of their own and emulate.

My daughter wears her hoodies this way. I don’t get it. It’s also about 3 sizes too big as well. 🤷‍♂️
The oversized fashion and being 3 sizes too big is exactly why they do it.  Both guys and girls don’t necessarily “want” it over there hands, but ultimately that’s how it ends up….the sleeve holes are too wide and sleeves too long…their skinny hands and arms don’t stop it from staying at their wrist. It’s just a logistical thing of oversized fashion.
