I say Meachem has turned the corner (1 Viewer)

(KFFL) Brett Martel, of The Associated Press, reports New Orleans Saints WR Robert Meachem has been working with the first-team offense in training camp. Meachem is also gaining confidence as he enters his third season. Meachem said, "This year they're going to get to see a first-round draft pick. The last two years, that's been somebody else." Wide receivers coach Curtis Johnson said, "I'm seeing him run now. Before, he was measuring his steps and thinking too much. Now he's starting to play and react and - wow - he's looking pretty good."
a lot of receivers (especially guys who were always naturally gifted) make huge rd year leap. I'm gonna follow this one. I mean hell even I could put up 500 yards and 4 tds in that offense if given a shot.

2) Are these the quotes you are talking about? Because other than beat writer speculation they are the only comments of substance on Meachem's player page at FBG. They're nice quote but hardly a slam dunk endorsement.
Try Rotoworld:"Most accounts have Meachem as the most impressive player in camp, and he's clearly outplaying Devery Henderson. "As far as talent goes, the sky's the limit for him," said Marques Colston. "He can run all the routes, make all the plays.""Drew Brees is expecting "big things" from WR Robert Meachem this season.'He's somewhat of our big play guy, but ... I feel that he's starting to move towards more of an every-down guy," Brees observed. "He's getting to the point where he's a complete receiver.'"
Thanks...I didn't feel like responding. Try to keep up Chaka.
IIRC, Chaka wasn't the brightest bulb in the cast of Land of the Lost.

Why would I try Rotoworld when I can use FBG? All the info anyone needs ends up here.Do these quotes have dates?

So 9 & 17 days before Lance Moore came back to practice.I don't understand your eyeroll, Rotoworld is a marginal football resource at best, particularly when compared to FBGs.

I don't think some people are looking at Meachem objectively.

Colston is the clear #1 WR target on that team. You can speculate on injury all you want but until it happens he is the Saints #1 WR.

Reggie Bush is the clear #2 receiving target on the Saints. Ditto everything I said about Colston.

Everyone else gets what's left. Fortunately with Brees there should be plenty left to divvy up, however that production is going to be split pretty evenly. Actually it is better to say that the extra production will favor whoever is open on a particular play because Brees will find the open man better than almost any other QB in the game.

With Meacham, Henderson, Shockey and Pierre Thomas all legitimate targets it will be difficult for any of them to produce consistently. What we will probably see is some low end production every week 2-3 catches 45 yards and each of them will have 2-3 big games throughout the season. Your guess on which games those will be is as good as mine.

Even if Bush and Colston get hurt, as many speculate they will, it will most likely produce an uptick across the board for the remaining players, maybe then Meachem can distinguish himself from the rest of the crowd. Then again so could Lance Moore, or Henderson. Heck in that scenario Shockey could turn into a 900 yard, 8 TD TE again.

Meachem will be interesting to watch this season. Maybe he will be able to pull a Roddy White and turn things around in his third year. (I'm not saying he will be what Roddy White was that year but he may be an example of a highly drafted WR that started to "get it" in year 3 and really comes into his own as a playmaker - he certainly has the offense to do it in).

Rotoworld apparently had some quoted FBGs didn't. So I'm not sure the facts support your stand. Do I think their own writers measure up to FBGs? No. But they are really on top of news, more so that the daily email from FBGs.As for Moore being back at practice... dig up some quotes on how he's performing. Here's what we do know... he's still not healthy enough to play in a preseason game, and he hasn't done anything in practice yet.

They're looking at having Meachem return kicks so they can get him on the field more.

Here's the only quote I could find, and it's not exactly "great":

And now, no one in the building is doubting Moore's ability to step up again.

"I don't worry about Lance, " receivers coach Curtis Johnson said. "One thing I like about Lance, he's always in tremendous shape. And he's super smart and understands all the positions. And he's spent a lot of time after practice with Drew. Just getting the reps, getting the timing with Drew, that's the most important thing.

"I don't see much of a drop-off. I don't know if he's going to get those same numbers, but it doesn't matter. Just keep catching the ball like he did and do what we ask him to do.

"He's a team guy, and we're thankful that we've got Lance."
They don't expect him to put up the same numbers, and they're already talking about him as a team player who knows all the positions. I'm sure they'll refer to him as a team player when he becomes the #3 WR and gets moved from his current position.

Looks like Moore was targeted 6 times by Brees & 3 times by Brunell against Oakland.

Meachem had 0 targets from Brees and 3 from Brunell.

Brees throw for 5,000 yards. There's plenty of room for someone to step up.

Meachem > Henderson, and that is coming from an LSU/Saints guy who's watch devery for many years. Love the guy, but he can't catch.

Meachem was taken by THIS staff in the 1st round. Sometimes you have to take off the FF glasses and think about real football. If he is ready, and was talented enough to be a 1st round pick, and now "gets" his position, and has physical tangibles over Moore, and can catch better than devery, and Moore knows all positions... Then Meachem gets #2 and Moore #3. Just watch. Moore was the biggest benefactor of injuries last year.

Colston

Meachem

Moore

Devery

Problem is that it's really more like:

Colston

Bush

Meachem/Shockey

Moore

Pierre

Devery

That puts Meachem at the median for players. that is about 700 yards and 5 scores. good for last pick in draft.

WR - Devery Henderson - 3

WR - Robert Meachem - 3

In the Subscribers contest - best low cost pairing in the contest - between the two of them, you are likely to get 4-5 games where they score enough to be counted in your point total - that is good value

Great call - wish I had thought of that.

It should be noted that Meachem returned 6 kickoffs for 148 yards on Sunday for an average of 24.7 yards per return and a long of 42 yards.

I have been talking up Josh Cribbs' value in return yardage leagues now that he is playing significant offensive snaps for the Browns, but if Meachem continues to return kickoffs for the Saints while contributing in the Saints offense, his upside is probably much higher than Cribbs in return yardage leagues.

Has anyone heard anything more about Meachem's role as a kick returner? Pierre Thomas is currently listed as #1 on the Saints depth chart at KR and Meachem is listed at #2. Does Pierre Thomas return kicks when he comes back from his injury? Does anything think Meachem locked down the job on Sunday? I know that the Saints cut Skylar Green and Courtney Roby, the other main competitors for the kickoff return spot.

I'd really love to know the answer to this question myself. I'd love to get Meachem off waivers before he really gets noticed.

I went ahead and added him simply because dropping Delhomme from the bench in return is a no risk endeavor. You would assume Peyton wouldn't want to jeopardize Thomas any further by implimenting him back into KR when Meachem has already proven to be more than competent. If anyone has an ear to the wall on this I'd much appreciate a heads up. You'll be awarded with a set of steak knives and a used ShamWow.

This was my thinking about Pierre Thomas. I'd be very surprised if the Saints let their starting runningback who is coming back from a knee injury return kickoffs.I've seen some discussion of Rod Harper being involved in kickoff returns, but he is not currently listed on the depth chart at the kickoff return spot and he was inactive this past weekend. Harper is currently listed as the third-string punt returner.

Saints signed WR Courtney Roby yesterday. He'll be returning KO's, for sure, and maybe Punts too.
