@icon - should I buy a new Bronco or new Jeep? (1 Viewer)

I've had my Bronco since August 2023. My takeaways:

2023 Badlands w/Sasquatch package. Hardtop.

Gas mileage is poor, there's just no getting around it. If you drive a lot, you may want to look elsewhere if that's important to you. I average 18mpg.

It's quieter than I'd even hoped on the highway. Even at 80-85 mph, it's not overly loud.

Ease of taking the hardtop completely off is great, but only if you have some sort of apparatus. Storage can also be an issue. I took the extra step of installing a hoist in my garage so my hardtop hangs suspended when I take it off. Saves tons of garage space and is quite helpful in taking the top on and off. Worth noting because you will not be able to take the rear shell off by yourself...you'll need another adult-ish male to take it off with you unless you have a hoist (my wife wasn't able to help with this--too tall/heavy).

The Sasquatch package makes a significant difference in looks imo, but if you're not going to off-road it's probably overkill. I'm still glad I have it, I like to sit higher on the road. But, if sitting higher is the only reason you get the Sasquatch you could probably save money just getting a regular one and a lift kit.

It parks and drives okay. Meaning it doesn't feel like you're driving a pick-up sized vehicle even though it's somewhat large.

I enjoy the heck out of mine overall, especially in the summer. I'll take the top completely off for most of the time between May-September.

The new Toyota Land Cruiser is the answer.

Thanks. Can you elaborate on why? I'm sure it's a solid vehicle. But they feel way more boring than the Bronco and Jeep.

And for sure, "more boring" is not necessarily a bad thing for all buyers.

Still one of the best cars I ever had, an older LC. Absolute beast. And then one of their trucks (Tundra). Same thing. Toyotas are made better as we all know. Look at resale, it's crazy. Like for Tacomas, it's unreal. They just do everything right so you never have to worry about that stuff, which I love. That thing will do whatever, wherever, forever. I test drove one and liked it. There's actually a base package WITHOUT all the bells and whistles, which I thought was refreshing. Simple, straight-forward, less to break too. Some of these go way too far with all these little extras that in the end, aren't that great, or rarely of use, so I like how they turned back the clock a bit. And on styling as well. Cool and unique look, back to its classic roots to some degree.

So I like the new boxy, old-school look, but that's not for everybody. I was at a BMW dealership recently talking to a lady who's been in the business forever and she was saying how we'll be seeing more of that, fwiw. Somewhat of a trend or just how it was piquing interest and stuff, I guess, but whatever. Personally I dig it and I have no qualms whatsoever about performance. On the contrary.

If you're into off-roading, or just having a rig that can go anywhere and do anything, the Land Cruiser has been the absolute standard all over the world for what, 70 years or so? Africa, Australia, etc. There's good reason for that. It could easily be the last vehicle you ever own, if you wanted.

ETA and they have a new price-point, which is significantly lower than where they've been the last 20 years. Up to 30K lower, starting in the mid-50's now.

This short article sums it up better than me. LINK

Car n Driver writeup.

Thanks. I can see those points.

For sure they seem practical and sensible. We've had several 4Runners and Tacomas. All did well and held value well.

I just think that's likely a different angle than Jeep or Bronco.

Car n Driver has it in the same category or "angle". I just threw that article up there, will repost below but they go on to say, "The LC's newfound tidiness puts it in line with other legendary trail experts, such as the Ford Bronco and the Jeep Wrangler."

Car n Driver

They give it a 9.5/10

Thanks. It's not in the same category for me.

For me, Land Cruiser is in the Yukon or Expedition or Sequoia category. Slightly more fun/cool than a mini van. But not a lot.

But I also get it will be wildly popular as it's practical.

Thanks for the feedback.

Interesting, because C&D specifically mention that this newer model drops it out of the Expedition / Sequoia category due to size. It's only got two rows of seats as well. With zero comps off-road.

Agree, it's not as "splashy" as the Jeep or Corvette, if that's what you're going for, but a minivan comparison? How so, exactly?

Thanks. I don't mean as much the size of the vehicle as the vibe. It just seems bland and boring. Again, not saying that's bad for everyone. A Corrola is bland and boring. But a great car for being dependable and practical.

Got it. Yeah, see I like that but get why many wouldn't. In fact the one I like the most is the "1958", with the round retro headlights. Hell, I dig the restored ones -- there are some great looking ones -- but they are way overpriced and if I ever got something vintage, it would be a VW bus.

I would LOVE one of the restored old ones but the cost doesn't line up. Plus even the best restoration isn't going to be as reliable as a new one.

I tried that a few years back when I bought a Jeep Wagoneer Woody. Looked super rad. Spent a good bit on restoration and new engine but wasn't a good idea.
