I'd like to buy my wife a used MacBook (1 Viewer)

I don't know anything about macs. I could figure out the specs on an older pc laptop, but have no idea how to find a slightly older model mac for her to use.  Anyone have any suggestions? Or somewhere I can find out what's what in mac specs?  Thanks.

Buying electronics for my wife is like buying them for an 8 year old. New phone, computer, camera, etc. at least once per year.

That said, a magnetic charger might help a lot.  And the non-new MacBooks have that.

I bought my wife a MagSafe adapter for the usb c cord the MacBooks have now . It was $30-40 and by griffin.  Her old MacBook was saved a few times from falling because of the old plug

Thanks.  If that's an option maybe that's the way to go.

5 of her last 6 were charge port breaks.

Whatever you get make sure she understands how the calendar works

what's your budget?     And what will she use it for?   if it's nothing processor intensive, look at a refurb'd MacBook air.

One here for $850.    This will look and feel like brand new -- I've bought several machines from apple refurb.

You can get cheaper than that if you go ebay/craigslist, but no warranty or after-sale support.

If she's breaking laptops every 8 months what makes you think she won't break a macbook?  Get her a Chromebook and tell her to take care of her ####.

Macbooks are durable as ####. Not only do they have smart #### like the magsafe power adapter, but they're built like tanks. My 8 year old MacBook Pro's aluminum case is dinged very visibly in multiple places from hard hits / falls and the damn thing just keeps on trucking. I've changed out HD, trackpad, and battery... but otherwise it's got 12,000+ hours of use on it and it runs like new.

Yea, this is where I am at too. A chromebook is sufficient and awesome for probably 90% of what people use computers for and they cost nothing these days.

She'll mostly edit photos.  And thanks - I appreciate the link.

My brother in law is telling me to get her a Surface Pro instead, because she can do editing work on the screen with a stylus/pen.  Now my whole world is upside-down.

Surface Pro or iPad Pro are great for editing photos. We have the iPad Pro because we are applecentric but I've wanted to buy a surface to play around with. The pen

Refurbished MacBook with SSD running lightroom or photoshop. Don't listen to your buddy.

Is this just an estimate?  or is there some util out there that gives you drive/battery device hours?  I know about "uptime" and I know about the battery cycle count, but I've never seen this as a metric before.

Estimate. Daily use 8-5 machine for 4 years plus estimated after hours and weekend use. No concrete metric, but the point is the machine has outlasted anything else I've ever owned by orders of magnitude and I have a hard time seeing why I can't keep it going another several years or more.   I love this machine.

I have a first gen aluminum MacBook , 2007 or 2008 , still runs but can't handle anything but minor tasks now

Short diversion hijack alert:

Dropped a ton on a G5 with 23 inch monitor way back when.  What the hell can I do useful with this stuff?  I have seen the monitor on ebay price around $130.

I've got a mid2008 MBP that was on it's deathbed about 3 years ago -- I decided to roll the dice and throw an SSD, new RAM and a new battery in it.   $200 later and that thing is still chugging right along today.  It's not as quick as it used to be, and it runs at about 700 degrees sometimes -- but the thing just won't die.

Take any money you can get for it and run.   The PowerPC CPUs in the old Macs (Pre-Intel adoption)will still run OS X 10.5 (Leopard -- released in late 2007) but will not run 10.6 (Snow Leopard -- released mid 2009 ) or anything since.

Unless you just want to install linux on it and use it as a VM farm or something similar.

Yep! SSD, Battery and RAM turned mine into a different machine entirely as well.  This machine has me sold on Mac laptops for life, or until I'm someone shown that they no longer make the best damn machines on the market.

Refurb on Apple

it'll be like brand new
If you have issues with thing breaking, and you buy something directly from Apple, I'd look into getting AppleCare. Very nice extended warranty type program from Apple. We had it for our iMac, and it was very handy for service as well as just plain calling to get help.

I'd avoid the Air if she breaks stuff, I found it light and awesome, but flimsy - Not sure of the budget, but this is $1100 and a decent deal from Apple; http://www.apple.com/shop/product/FF839LL/A/refurbished-133-inch-macbook-pro-27ghz-dual-core-intel-i5-with-retina-display
I have had an Air that has been mainly used by my kids (now some in the early teens) for what will be 2 years this summer. We have had no problems with it being 'flimsy.' :2cents:
