2009 IDP Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The IDP Forum here has grown quickly over the past few years and is probably the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things related to IDPs. In what we hope to make an annual tradition, the IDP Spotlight series will be a key part of our preseason effort this year. As many of you know from what has been done with offensive players over the years, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we hope to publish IDP Spotlights for approximately 20-30 players, which should account for many of the most interesting IDP starters for this year and possibly years to come.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discuss expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week (or possibly longer) of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways.

1) At the end of the week (or longer when necessary), we will tally the projections into a consensus.

2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

well Schobel is one of those DE I am curious to here comments from the experts on!!! he is 32 and had a serious injury last year this alone is enough to scare me, however when healthy he can be a force and is proven. I think if he is healthy the addition of Maybin will help his stats, I see him getting 48 solos 18 assist 7 sacks 5 passes deflected.

Schobel is a tough player to project this season. There are strong arguments to rank him near the top ten or out of the top twenty. Optimistically, his history of two way production, robust quarterback hit numbers despite low sack numbers and reportedly successful recovery from last season's Lisfranc injury could put him back in the top ten. Realistically, his age, recent significant injury and inability to finish in the pocket should temper expectations. I like Schobel to rebound, but would be leery rostering him as my DL1.

43 solos, 11 assists, 8 sacks, 4 FF/FR, 0 INT, 4 PD

I agree with Jene, a bounce back to historical levels is hard to expect. Maybe if Maybin is hot out of the gate, the Bills can fluster opposing offensive lines, but it's just as likely that Maybin gets manhandled early as he learns the ropes. Schobel elected to NOT have surgery on his injury - I'm not sure what to make of that, except that if he has even a little issue early, I'll bail on him in any leagues that I own him.

“Aaron Schobel has done a good job getting back in and getting himself going,” said defensive line coach Bob Sanders. “His intensity has looked good and he’ll be ready to go. He’s an excellent pass rusher and a very, very instinctive player.”“We anticipate Aaron will play with the same confidence, toughness, and production that we have seen on a consistent basis in the past, and missed last year once he left our lineup,” said head coach **** Jauron. But what about Schobel himself?Schobel still has supreme belief in his own abilities, and he remains confident that his foot will respond favorably when asked to drive his 6’4” frame up field. But he and everyone else are withholding judgment as to whether his foot will allow him to still be a consistent threat off the edge. “As we go through camp and stuff I’m going to feel better especially from the explosion part from not doing it,” said Schobel of driving off the healed foot. “You can’t really train to be in football shape. You have to do the football stuff to get in shape for that. Through the spring I felt more explosive. So it takes time, but it’s going to come back. But as far as it hurting it doesn’t hurt.”Schobel admits that when he gets out of bed in the morning and stands up his foot feels stiff, but after about 10 minutes of walking around it’s loose and feels the same as it ever did with no pain.“I don’t see it being a factor,” he said.
Not the most rousing endorsement, but still positive.41/13, 8.5 sacks 3 FF/FR 3 PD

bump for more comments/projections.

will Schobel bounce back to his career norms?

will the foot injury be a recurring problem?

how will the addition of Maybin impact Schobel's production?
