If NE beats GB in the SB they will have ... (1 Viewer)

This seems like a pretty high number. Does anyone know what the record is for most playoff teams played and/or defeated in any given year?

Has any team had the bad luck of having to face all 12 playoff teams in any one season? (Or 11, assuming said team survived to make the playoffs.)

Given how inter-conference scheduling works, 8 out of 11 is probably the most playoff teams you could face. You play one entire division in the other conference, which can get a max of three playoff teams, and you can only play one other out-of-conference playoff team during the season (Super Bowl).If it happens, that would be an impressive footnote to an already impressive accomplishment.ETA - I guess that gives you nine as the most possible playoff teams you could face in a season, not eight. Oops

Yeah, I think given the current scheduling format you are correct, 9 is the max # of playoff teams you could face in a given year.ETA: And interesting to note if the Titans had lost to the Colts in Week 17, the Browns would have made it instead, and then the Pats would have beaten 9.

Out of conference team max = 4 (3 from the same division and the SB)

In confernence = all 6 (lots of ways to accomplish this one)

Total = 10

How do you play yourself?
No one said the team that played all the teams had to be a playoff team. But I guess at that point that team couldn't play the SB team from the other conference, so I guess the high water mark would have to be 9.

No, there's never been a team that has had to overcome as much bad luck as the Patriots have had to year in and year out.

Right. Your statement about playing a team in the Super Bowl, combined with the title "If NE beats GB in the SB they will have beaten 8 of 11 2007 playoff teams" had me thinking that way. Either way, it's 9.

That game would be the highest rated SB ever. Can you imagine the hype? The invincible Patriots vs. the gritty, gutsy, lovable Brett Favre trying to beat them all by himself and put a cherry on top of his incredible career. That is some compelling drama to go along with the biggest stage. I just hope the NFL gets word to the officials that Brett Favre might need some help getting there.

The 1991 Redskins played 4 of the 5 NFC playoff teams in the regular season including Dallas twice, only not playing the Saints who were eliminated in the first round anyway. They also played the AFC Central champion Oilers in the regular season and AFC East Champ Bills in the Super Bowl. Oh and they also had two games against the 10-6 Eagles who somehow missed the playoffs. Imo its the toughest schedule ever for a SB champ.

Ohh...what if two of the playoff teams in your own conference were in your division...that'd be an extra 2 games against playoff teams.

OP was talking about number of playoff teams beaten in a season, not total games against playoff teams.Max possible for games against playoff teams would be 10 regular season games (4 in division, 3 in other divisions, same conference and 3 other conference) + 4 max playoff rounds = 14 games out of 20.
