If T. Jackson is out and Holcomb is in (1 Viewer)

(Rotoworld) If Tarvaris Jackson (groin strain) is not practicing by Thursday, he is expected to sit out Minnesota's Week 3 game against the Chiefs.

Impact: The Minneapolis Star-Tribune is already predicting that Kelly Holcomb will get the nod despite coach Brad Childress' support of Jackson on Monday.

Holcomb is a much better passer and may get that passing game going...

i would love it if holcomb could pull a great performance out of this opportunity. my question is why didn't hoclcomb play last week instead of bollinger?

:holcombdynastyowener:

Jackson has looked bad, so I would think a change at QB would upgrade Peterson a bit this week. If Holcomb plays and actually starts hitting his WRs, KC will have to lay off the front line a bit to respect the pass.

Didnt even think about this. With AJ going down I may need to rely on Wade (remind me again why I kept him and not Curry during the preseason?) for a week, possibly two.

Will look on the WW but not likely to find much better than Wade there and I won't be using my WW slot (first pick at this point) without a sure fire potential stud out there.

Holcomb seems to be a better bet until Jackson heals, but there is no telling what Childress will do.

The W rate for QBs and coaches making their initial start in Arrowhead is around 20% dating back to 1989....no matter who starts it may be their first start in KC and the trend is not pretty....and remember they are playing the Chiefs Defense which has given up 26 points so far while they have been on the field.

If only the offense was.....what, maybe a THIRD of what the defense is, KC would be fine.

I look for a low scoring game in Arrowhead....something like 31-2 KC.

Holcomb started in KC both when he was with the Browns and when he was with the Bills. This would be at least his 3rd start there. It's looking like he'll be the guy:

Kelly Holcomb and Brooks Bollinger, who either hadn't been told or were being loyal employees, weren't about to divulge company secrets. And Tarvaris Jackson said his groin injury is getting better by the day.So who is going to be the starter Sunday at Kansas City? All indications are that barring a miraculous recovery by Jackson, Holcomb will get the nod for at least one week. People with knowledge of the situation said the 11-year veteran got the most work with the first team during Wednesday's practice at Winter Park."For me it's just a competitive disadvantage to declare a guy today," said coach Brad Childress, who likely won't officially name a starter until Friday. "... I hate to be evasive but I'm evasive."Impossible for the Vikings to hide was the sight of Jackson walking with a noticeable limp. According to the injury report, he did not participate in any of practice.Jackson suffered the groin strain in the fourth quarter of the Vikings' 20-17 loss Sunday at Detroit and departed in overtime. The second-year quarterback, who threw a career-high four interceptions in the defeat, has been undergoing nearly nonstop treatment and expressed optimism about his progress. Childress made it clear Monday that despite Jackson's subpar performance, he remained the starter. But the coach also isn't going to put his prized prospect in any danger."You've got to be able to protect yourself," Childress said. "You've got to be able to move about. You can't be a sitting duck. So yeah, he's got to be able to move around first before anything else. [This] hasn't affected a throwing motion or anything like that. It's just a matter of not having all his faculties."Said Jackson: "I don't want to go out there if I'm not 100 percent and not able to at least make plays a little bit. I don't want to go out there and hurt the football team."Although Childress might not be willing to tell the media of his plans, he said Wednesday that he had talked to Holcomb and Bollinger and "we kind of know where it's at."Holcomb, 34, who was acquired in late August from Philadelphia for a sixth-round pick in 2009, has been the Vikings' emergency quarterback for the first two games. His only action came in the preseason finale against Dallas when he played the third quarter and completed five of eight passes for 59 yards with an interception."It's been a little while," Holcomb said. "It's not like riding a bicycle, but you've got to get in there and look at all the tape and see what they're doing to you."Holcomb was familiar with the West Coast offense the Vikings use after spending five months in virtually the same system following his trade last March from Buffalo to Philadelphia. It did take some time for him to learn a few of the differences between the schemes and that is one reason Bollinger served as Jackson's backup for the first two games."I have seen him develop, and really it was developing the small things, whether it be a snap count or how we do a motion or how we call something," Childress said of Holcomb.Jackson, meanwhile, not only had to address questions about his second injury in two NFL seasons -- last year a torn meniscus in his right knee slowed him for much of the year -- but he also had to field queries regarding his miserable day in Detroit. That included a 26.4 quarterback rating.Jackson admits his performance makes the prospect of missing the upcoming game all the more frustrating, adding, "I want to get back out there again and just try to correct some things and get better."No matter what happens, though, he contends his confidence level remains high."I just know what decisions I have to make and just not throwing the football up," Jackson said. "One thing as a quarterback you learn is you're going to have bad games, but you've got to move on. That's part of your job and you've got to have a short memory because you've got 10 other guys depending on you; you've got your whole team depending on you really. You don't want to lose your confidence just because you had a bad game, but at the same time you want to make better decisions."StarTribune.com

If the Chiefs put up 31 against the Minnesota defense... But I agree, it should be an extremely low scoring affair. The defenses have a distinct possibility of outscoring the offenses.

31-9. You forgot the Minnesota "D" TD.

There are a couple reasons Holcomb didn't play last week

The first is that he was the #3 QB on the depth chart. There's a league rule that says if you play your #3, then the #1 & #2 guys can't take the field for the remainder of the game.

The second, and probably more important reason is that Childress has much man-love for Bollinger as he coached him in Wisconsin. So he wanted to give him a chance.

I'd like to see Holcomb play so I can see if we can get a better feel about what the real problem with the Minnesota offense is - is it quarterback play, or is it the scheme itself?

How about upgrading the Vikes in general with Tarvaris being out. He was the weakest link anyway. At least he saved some face getting hurt.

I now Definitely like the Vikes > KC .

Do you honestly think Kelly is good enough to tell you that?
I said "better" feel. Not "good" feel. :shrug:I think Holcomb is more NFL quarterback than Tarvaris is.
You know what's going to happen. So do I. Last week with Tarvaris in they threw the ball way to much. Now that they have to go to the 3rd stringer they'll run the ball way to much.Chili is and always has been a bad game planner and a poor play caller. He must do something well, but my guess is the reason he was Andy Reid's guy is because Andy Reid wanted a yes man.

Whether or not Childress has man-love for Bollinger has nothing to do with time spent in Wisconsin. While Childress may have been involved in recruiting Bollinger they were never at the University of Wisconsin together. Bollinger started as a true freshmen in 1999. Childress was the OC in Philly in 1999.

My mistake.

Guys I was up WAAAAAYYYY too late when I typed that....

I actually think it will be a KC win but 21-3.

Man, I should have known better than to post that late lol....sorry for the mis-understanding

watched holcomb in Eagles camp this year. He looked awful. Really frustrated right now we didn't make a move in the offseason.

Vikings' Holcomb likely to start for injured Jackson

Thursday, September 20, 2007

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) Vikings quarterback Tarvaris Jackson missed his second straight day of practice Thursday, and it's appearing more likely that veteran Kelly Holcomb will start for Minnesota against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Jackson injured his groin in the fourth quarter against Detroit last Sunday, and has been unable to participate in the first two practices of the week.

But Vikings coach Brad Childress was still playing it coy Thursday, saying the window is still open for Jackson to recover and play at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday.

"I'm still keeping it open because I watched him move around and he did better this morning," Childress said.

Holcomb, acquired late in the preseason in a trade with Philadelphia to provide more experience behind the young Jackson, has been working to get acclimated with the Vikings and appears to have leapfrogged incumbent backup Brooks Bollinger on the depth chart.

Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said Holcomb was "absolutely" ready to play if the Vikings need him Sunday. He also said that missing practice is more detrimental to a young player such as Jackson, who has only four career starts, as opposed to a veteran.

"I'll be honest with you, Tarvaris needs every rep that he can get," Bevell said. "He needs to be in there. He needs to be running the offense."

Still, the Vikings said that if Jackson is healthy, he's the starter.

In other injury news, safety Dwight Smith missed his second straight practice with a hamstring injury and fellow starting safety Darren Sharper (hip) was limited.

That makes the decision to keep veteran safeties Tank Williams and Mike Doss on the roster all the more important.

Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier said he was preparing as if Doss and Williams would be playing most of the snaps in Sunday's game at Kansas City.

"We have to do that because neither Dwight nor Darren practiced yesterday, so you have to prepare that way," Frazier said. "Hopefully they will both be ready by Sunday, but we have to get Tank and Mike ready."

Doss has been bothered by a calf injury for the last month and hasn't played in a regular-season game since he tore knee ligaments while with the Indianapolis Colts against Washington on Oct. 22.

He has been practicing and said he feels ready to go if needed.

"It's been almost a year since I've been in a real, regular-season game," Doss said. "I'm looking forward to getting back out there."

Running back Chester Taylor (hip/oblique), fullback Tony Richardson (forearm) and receiver Troy Williamson (hamstring) were also limited in practice.
