If the NFL was "fixed" would you still watch? (1 Viewer)

Fixed.

I don't mean like wrestling where everything may be orchestrated.

But if, lets say if in a couple of games in the season or in the playoffs, the commish, made sure a couple of teams would make it into the postseason, or advance to get a bigger market into another game.

Lets also assume in the past 5 years, more than 15 games were altered, this was a pretty common occurance, not just a one time deal.

For voting purposes, lets assume the commish was fired, jailed, and the new commish vowed to NEVER let this happen again.

Would you still watch knowing this happened and could happen again?

Falcons lose several early games last year...forces Petrino back to college...NFL doesn't want him.

Miami goes 1 -15....forces Cameron back to his spot as an OC...NFL doesn't want him to leave as an OC.

Dallas wins games with TO and Jerry Jones which is good for Americas team.....great for NFL.

2007/8- The NYG (home of the NFL office) win a record amount of road games to get to the SB and upset the heavily favored Patriots who had been busted in a cheating scandal. New York is able to save the NFL from the disgrace of "cheaters" winning the league title and going undefeated.

I could go on but........

I know most of the "evidence" posted in this thread is tounge-in-cheek, but good marketers (and the NFL has plenty) make their living by making an extraordinary story out of anything (it doesn't hurt that the media loves extraordinary stories either). If it would've been Green Bay vs. Giants it would've been about Brett Favre and Manning. In fact any Green Bay vs. anyone would be all about Brett Favre and can he go out on top. Playing vs. Patriots and it would've been HoFer Brett Favre's last stand against Goliath, monumental odds. The other side with the Patriots was always 19-0. If San Diego makes it against Green Bay it's the old Brett Favre against the young Phillip Rivers. It's about Norv Turner succeeding and taking San Diego where they couldn't get before. If it's San Diego and the Giants you're looking at a battle of the young up-and-coming QBs in Rivers vs. Manning. There's an "improbable" story in almost everything and if anyone can find it, it's the NFL marketers and the journalists.

I don't think the NFL is anywhere near fixed, they stand to lose too much by doing so. Including me as a fan, fixing games is about as unforgivable a sin in sports as there is.

Yes, the refs were clearly fixing that Superbowl when they called back the long New England return for a TD.To be perfectly honest, I'd still watch the NFL if the four largest-market teams were guaranteed a playoff spot every year. I'm not talking about an under-the-table deal, either- I mean a blatant and admitted guarantee that they would make the playoffs. I wouldn't view it as so very different from Baseball, anyway, where the Yanks and the Red Sox might as well be guaranteed a spot thanks to the tremendous competitive advantage they have. What it boils down to, for me, is that my team has a legit chance (maybe not the best chance in the league, but a LEGIT chance) to be crowned champion, and that the product on the field remains the best in sports.
