Not a fan of bull fighting.  Not a fan of rodeo where the animals are caused discomfort to buck.  I might be a fan of animal against man if, as Otis suggested, it were a level paying field.  I might watch bull fighting if it were 4 loin cloth clad men, with no weapons, against the bull and the object was to get the bull off of its feet.  How about you?

I kind of had the same thoughts about gamehunting a few years ago....what's the fun in shooting a deer or a bear from a distance?  Of course, there is skill involved, but imagine if you took on the deer with just a Bowie knife, mano y mano?  Gives the deer a fighting chance, IMO.

I've watched steer roping when I'm drunk.  Sounds similar but significantly less cruel and more likely to lead to hilarious injuries.

You guys need to check out bull poker at the rodeo. I believe they still put the strap on the bull to get him riled up but the game is complete with human suffering.  Each round features America's best and brightest.

Convict Poker is one of the best parts of the Angola Prison Rodeo.

Edit: "Guts and Glory" is probably the craziest event I've ever seen at a rodeo.

Definitely my favorite event at the Angola Prison Rodeo is "Guts and Glory".  A bunch of convicts line up and try to take a poker chip that's strapped between the horns of a bull in order to earn $500.  The bull does a fair job of stopping them.

I think they still do some of the ribbon bullfights in France - the fighter has to remove a ribbon from the bull.

Yeesh, I'm not sure I like the idea of using convicts in something  like this. Seems almost on par with Roman gladiators, or forcing a bull to fight for its life

ETA: oh, it's a convict rodeo, so I assume they're all doing it of their own free choice, and other rodeo events as well.  In that case, nothing to see here, move along.

Yeah, these guys make between 5 cents and 75 cents an hour working for the prison, or they can get a few hundred bucks in the rodeo for the weekend.  Not much of a choice.

Well then, doesn't it come back to the ethical question of using prisoners to risk their lives for entertainment's sake? If it's not much of a choice for the prisoners, it seems pretty much like forced gladiatorial combat.

It does come back to that. 

The average sentence at Angola is about 90 years, for those who will aren't serving life sentences.  Most seem happy to have a moment in the sun.

There's a bar in Madrid on Plaza Mayor dedicated to the times the bull won. Love that place, great tapas and the pictures on the wall, well, someone died for those... (or at least got maimed).
