If you're Tiki Barber, were you rooting FOR or AGAINST the NYG (1 Viewer)

I truly wonder how deep that selfishness lies. Is he happy as a long-time Giant that they are headed to the Super Bowl or was he hoping they didn't make it since it was his 1st year out? What do you guys think?

Also, anyone know when his 1st scheduled appearance on TV might be? I'd love to see the interview.

I'm fairly confident that Tiki is happy for the majority of his former teammates. He will find a way to feel responsible for a little bit of their success this year, i.e. the new approach of Coughlin, the way Manning has become a true leader, and the development of the young running backs. His ego will still be intact.

That being said, I don't think they would have made this far with him.

I'd be surprised to see him give props to Eli.

I would be surprised too, or at least if he was sincere about it. He may give it lip service, but I would have a hard time believing him.I used to like him a lot, but after the way he has acted the past year or so I would be surprised if he was rooting for the Giants.

I agree.

I really think he was probably hoping the Giants would lose tonight. Kind of sad when you think about it...

Meki is all about Meki. Guy would never admit it, but definately wanted them to lose tonight. I've never lost more respect for a player I so loved as Meki.

I have always liked Tiki, but he went out sounding like a very bitter person. There were rumblings about his selfishness and maybe him leaving was the best thing for all involved.

I think Tiki is kicking himself today for retiring the year his team makes it to the SB.

I'd venture to say that when he made his decision to abandon his team/teamates, he never expected they could make it to the big game.

I think it's ridiculous to say he wouldn't be happy. He was ready to retire when he did. He also retired a Giant, and that will always be his team. Some people in here are such drama queens, and try to make drama out of nothing.

I think the outcome of the Giants improbable playoff run has made it all too easy for revisionists to blame Tiki. I'm not saying he doesn't have some culpability because it indeed appears the team chemistry was better off without him (however hard it is to quantify chemistry from the outside looking in). However, as others have said, the guy wasn't reviled by most of his teammates nor has he ever suggested he didn't like the vast majority of them. I'm sure he's quite proud of the Giants, happy for his former teammates and proud of his allegiance to the team.

I agree, but I'm in no way blaming Tiki for past NYG failures nor am I saying they are better off without him. That's a separate thread. I'm just curious with his outlook and how quick he was to throw many of his ex teammates and coaches under the bus if he's happy for them or not. I really have a hard time thinking that he would be truly happy for them as a TEAM. Yes, he may be happy for some individuals that he was close with, but I really don't know if he's happy for the organization, the one that he has been a member of for a long time.As far as being proud of his allegiance to the team, he sure could have fooled me from his numerous comments during his broadcasts throughout the year. Someone who is proud of their allegiance doesn't say the things he said, IMO.

Abandon his teammates? He retired.
Plus, it was not as if Meki was a team player in the first place. "Abandoning" them was a favor considering the cancer Meki was while on the team - undercutting both the HC and the young impressionable QB. What better way to implode a team from the inside than to go after the two natural leaders with only your self interest at heart?

Is Meki Tiki? Tiki isn't the only one on the Giants team that said negative things about Coughlin, several teammates have, and as for Eli, he looked lost and confused last year. Hopefully Tiki talking about Eli's lack of leadership skills lit a fire under Eli. Sometimes constructive criticism helps people. Tiki also never abandoned his team. I saw a interview with Strahan last year, and he said Tiki told all of them before the season started that it would be his last year. It got leaked into the media when I think Tiki was at a book signing date, and someone asked him about retirement. Giants fans should be enjoying this time, not saying bitter things about Tiki, who was the heart and soul of that team for years.

I'm a huge Giants fan so naturally I always liked Tiki's production but for some reason I just never really liked him as a player like I do for Jacobs, Plaxico etc.

Now that he's a whiny ##### on TV I'm glad he's gone and watching the Super Bowl from the comfort of his own living room.

And for what its worth, not that I would have expected anything different, but he openly admitted rooting against them in the Tampa Bay game. I get your brother is on the team, but if was really happy about this game, I think he would have been happy about the first game.

He hates this win at the bare minimum for this very question and the fact he has to address this.

I don't think anyone is blaming Tiki for anything. Obviously his production only helped the Giants. My biggest problem with him leaving was the way he spoke in the media about his former QB. What were his intentions in telling the world how he thinks it is humorous to listen to Eli do his job? If he felt any allegiance to the Giants he wouldn't have tried to destroy their moral right before the season began.

Meki = Tiki. I have been coming down hard on him for two seasons, and was VERY critical of Meki all last year. This is far from revisionist history for me... I truly believe he was more of a negative force for the team than a positive one, and a source of much derision and division on the team. Not saying anything bitter about Meki now that I did not say over the past two seasons when he utterly disappointed me insofar as being a teamate and a person.

Blood is thicker than water. You root for your brother. It shouldn't be any other way. Plus, it's his twin. I think it would be only natural for the guy to-- even subconsciously-- root against them. All he had to do is stay and that could have been him. Ronde has a ring; now he'd have another shot. If they lose badly, he could say (to himself) that he only spared himself the misery of another SB blowout. Deep down, he might be rooting for that.

I'm not saying that's good or bad. I think it's human nature. If they win, he'll feel happy for his friends a few years down the road. But it will probably hurt a bit in the short-term.

Of-topic, but Dino Ciccarelli has to feel the same way. He comes to the Detroit Red Wings after they've won some cups, plays great and they keep falling short. Eventually he gets frustrated and signs a nice deal with the Lightning. Then the Red Wings win more cups without him. Eventually he retires sicne Tampa isn't very good....and once he does the Lighting win the Cup. I'm sure he's happy for his friends, but frustrated as well.

That's his twin brother and, by both their admission, they're one another's best friends to boot. The idea that he would be rooting for his brother against old co-workers and teammates hardly indicates he wouldn't feel good about the Giants success in any other matchup.

I think he's the sole reason for the success of the Giants. His tough love for Eli and the HOF knowledge he passed along to Brandon. W/o Tiki retiring, they don't take Bradshaw.

Is that what you call his comments AFTER retiring? Saying he laughed at him in the huddle and couldn't take him seriously? My bad, I thought it was just being a ****

Maybe you need to review who posted that. to the OP :X

Tiki is no doubt happy the Giants made the Super Bowl.LOTS of Meki face time over the next 2 weeks = a happy Meki.
:moneybag: With that said, Tiki doesn't want Tiki's former team to make Tiki look bad and win a Super Bowl without Tiki around.

Tom COughlin made Tiki Barber, and Barber pays that back with criticizing his coach to the media as a player. Oh how "Mr. Fumble" Barber forgets how it was Coughlin that gave him another chance. Oh well.

He had a chance to go out like another former NY RB the same year (Martin) and while Curtis Martin will be celebrated for years to come in Jets lore, Tiki's legacy will have tarnish on it due to the way he left. It is sad because he was just as impactful as Martin was for the Jets and I think over time Barber will regret it.

I'm not sure it's quite a case of Coughlin making Barber, but I agree with this statement in general. Barber became elite under Coughlin's coaching and he did nothing but throw the guy under the bus. Statements like "we were out coached" following the Wildard loss to the Panthers a few years back come to mind. For me, Tiki is a total #####.

Curtis Martin was everything Tiki was not. A true man, a leader, a teamate and someone worthy of the utmost respect.

I definitely agree. I think up until the last couple of years of his career, Barber could have been on the same track, but there was the complaining about coaching and then this year and the questioning of former teammates' desire/leadership.
