Ikaika Alama-Francis (1 Viewer)

He didn't get on the field much last year - is he maybe a sleeper to break out this year? I mean, all he has to beat out is Jared DeVries, right?

As the season progresses, I would think the Lions will have IAF play on rushing downs with Cliff Avril as the pass-rush specialist. Avril is lighting-in-a-bottle and torched a 4.51 at the combine. IAF could still slide to the DT position on passing downs next to Cory Redding.

Also, you cannot discount Jared DeVries. The guy does just enough stay pesky. He played more than IAF last year.

bump for anyone with info after DET minicamp.
Detroit camp was rookie only. Their full squad camp is May 20-22, though, so we'll get some information earlier than most of the other teams. Only note to come out of Detroit was that the team was impressed with the speed of all three big defensive draft picks and hope their instincts translate to pads. I'd be watching out for Avril. Sounds like a potential find as a Tampa-2 rush end. IAF is probably battling White for snaps on the strong side or in rotation on running downs as WD noted.

DeVries is likely to start, at least early on, but I would not be surprised to see Alama-Francis get more snaps since he has played all over the line. The Lions rotate quite a bit.

Is IAF just one guy in a rotation, or are they starting to think that he's fulfilling his potential and could have a greater role? My impression from reading the media reports is that IAF's potential, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder, with some saying he'll impress this year and others either being silent or damning him with faint praise. He's part of a decision I'm making on one of my rosters between a "safe" backup in Geathers, and him who I regard as more of a flier but with greater upside.

I continue to hold out hope that he can produce . . . something.

There's a report that he and other defenders are adding bulk to play in the new defense. Can anyone give me any inkling as to the scheme they're going to run in Detroit?
I'm not expecting much. Avril and White are going to start at DE. Alama-Francis will be a platoon player at best unless he all of a sudden starts making plays. He has yet to show that he can. They are running a base 4-3, but I think they will run some hybrids occasionally, especially on passing downs.

I have abandoned hope. If he makes a surge during camp, I'll snag him off the wire. I am pretty sure nobody else in my league(s) are interested in him

Don't get me wrong. It's make or break time on my roster too, but sack-generating DE's are at a premium in my league, so if he emerges I don't want to miss it.

Is he expected to line up on the right or left defensive side? Also, what scheme do you expect Detroit's will most closely resemble this year?

It's Jim Schwartz, so you can expect it to look like Tennessee's scheme when the transition is fully made. Widened ends with speed rushing capability, big bodied tackles up front and as much speed with good size as he can get at LB with some zone coverage behind.

IAF would be a LDE here, with Cliff Avril playing the RDE. And I wouldn't hold any hope that IAF will suddenly develop his raw talent and take on more than a minor rotational role.
