"I'll call it now" - Preseason edition (1 Viewer)

As far as preseason predictions go....1. The Vikings and Giants strike a trade, realizing they each have glaring weaknesses where the other has a strength. MIN sees that Peterson is ready to go and the Giants realize that Droughins/Jacons was never going to work. So they swap Chester Taylor for a 2nd round pick and Sinorice Moss.
I would approve of this deal with or without Moss.

The Titans IR Lendale White after he fails to practice even 1/2 the reps in camp. They would release him outright, but IR because of the "injuries". Vince Young realizes his Madden curse may be that he goes 0-16 with the lac k of weapos around him.3. Laurence Maroney's shoulder injury flares up again and forces him to the PUP lost, bringing Corey Dillon out of retirement to run for NE.4. The Green Bay Packers emerge quickly as a competent offensive unit, as Noah Herron and Morency create a serviceable pair. Greg Jennings' development quickens and the Pack give thanks the did not trade for Randy Moss.5. Dominic Rhodes outperforms Lamont Jordan & Co. by leaps and bounds and is anointed the #1 back by Lane Kiffin after 3 PS games, leaving many to wonder is Lamont Jordan will be cut.Try those on for size....
Bam! :yes: 1) Would be brilliant to see.2) I can see the first part of it happening.3) I can see the first part of this one happening too.4) Herron - nah, Morency & Jennings - yeah.5) I think this is easily the most believable of the lot. Rhodes will surprise a lot during the preseason (they're playing the NFC West), but it'll be interesting to see if Goodell suspends him for that DUI. ;)

The Redskins offense will be top five in both yards gained and points scored.
I admire the ballsy call here, but I'm just wondering how they might accomplish this feat? With no offensive draft picks until QB Jordan Palmer in round 6, they would need to come up with at least 6 more points per game from the same cast that didn't produce even a 60-rec receiver. Ladell Betts filled in quite admirably for Portis last season with 1154 yards rushing on 245 carries. In other words, the loss of Portis didn't hamper their running game. So where is the change going to come from?
What needs to change? Not much. The biggest reasons to be optimistic are the way the team finished last season, and simply the passage of time. The latter has allowed the tream to master Saunders' offense, Campbell to apparently show dramatic improvement, and guys like Moss, Portis and Jansen to get healthy. They also have an easier schedule than they did last year.

The only starter they lost from last year was Derrick Dockery, who was a good player but was arguably their worst o-lineman. It always amazes me how people overlook continuity as its own virtue, and especially when you're entering year two in a Saunders offense that has shown multiple times in the past that it tends to come to full bloom at that point.

Tavaris Jackson will show everyone that he is not any good at all and the Vikings will scramble to sign some bum off the street or trade with some other club. In a shocker, it's Culpepper.

A.Peterson will become the full time RB by week three and never look back. Chester Taylor will be playing for someone else in '08

The Brett Favre consecutive game streak ends this year as he sits out a couple games with injury. He comes back late in the season and then does finally hang it up after this year.

Prediction

===========

Leinart, Edge, Boldin and Fitzergald lead the Cardinals to the best Offense in the NFL.

Reason

===========

Wisehunt will coordinate their offense and things will be "in sync" from the first snap.

Prediction

===========

Randy Moss leads the NFL in yards and TD's for WR.

Reason

===========

Bellicheck and Brady will take advantage of this incredible resource early and often.

Prediction

===========

Eli Manning turns in his worst performance of his career.

Reason

===========

His head gets confused by all the new ideas, his mechanics stay horrible, he has lost his main weapon in Tiki, and he continues to choke under the increase in pressure.

Prediction

===========

Brian Urlacher and Nathan Vasher combine for 1 turnover per game over the season.

Reason

===========

I can feel it my bones.

For those that predicted Brandon Jacobs to fail miserably in 2007, please be reminded that this is a thread for predictions and not guaranteed certainties. Carry on.

The more likely scenario is that Favre calls a much hyped press conference after this seaosn to announce he's returning for another season.

good god people can't read...

ned's certified preseason locks:

1 - dede dorsey leads the league in rushing creating all sorts of new rbbc talk. This will show why indy didn't pursue any rbs during the offseason.

2 - kitna's stock rises quickly after det's offense clicks on all cylinders late in preseason.

3 - devin hester impresses as a wr and becomes the starter opposite mushin.

1) Brandon Jacobs will be injured by week 4 - why: he is recklass and throws his buddy around looking for the contact and runs upright.
if he keeps running like he has been he will get hurt. he is a big guy but there are guys just as big has him if not bigger

Rookie receiver Steve Smith will outplay his more heralded USC counterpart Dwayne Jarrett, who will remind many of Mike Williams this year. Jarrett doesn't appear to be the complete knucklehead Williams is, but he also lacks speed and sometimes drops easy passes. I always thought Smith performed when given a chance, and I believe you'll see that in New York this year as he takes over the starting role from Amani Toomer.

DJ Hackett and Vincent Jackson catch a few TDs each and are on everyone's sleeper list on draft day. Reg season-Hackett lives up to his draft spot, jackson does not.

Clinton Portis or Michael Turner WILL be traded during preseason.

Tenn, GB, Seattle , Chicago are most likely candidates..if SA gets hurt, Seattle has ZERO depth at the position , including Maurice Morris..

Fantasy Index curse strikes again, LT gets hurt in preseason.

McNabb gets hurt fetching a glass of water in training camp ,and is out for the season. fragile d-mac.

Maroney re-injures his shoulder in preseason,and is out 6-8 weeks, allowing sammy morris to become the teams' featured back..

Ladell Betts shows more pizzazz than Portis during training camp, and starts on opening day.

Devery Henderson outplays Colston in preseason,and becomes a pro bowl WR in 2007..

Eric Johnson blows up in the preseason, and continues that momentum into the reg season, catching 80 balls for 850 yards and 10 tds.

Ced Benson flops in preseason, loses the job to A. Peterson..

Damon Huard looks all-world in preseason, and the Chiefs go on to win 12 games in 2007.

Ok I have a few....

Portis will return to being one of the top backs in the league and Betts will return to what he is...a good backup. Portis is muucch more talented, he just got hurt.

Rock-solid Rudi Johnson will take a step back this year and drop from the top 10. 3.8 ypc last year and their line looks to be worse this year.

McGahee will have a very solid year and be a top 10 pick next year.

Javon Walker has a QB that can get him the ball like Favre did a few years ago and will lead the league in long TD's (good top 5 candidate).

Vince Young will be mortal this year due to the fact that the Titans probably have the least talent in the entire league.

The QB controversy begins in Carolina as Carr gives the appearance of being a legit NFL QB in pre-season games that are meaningless. Of course it's a mirage but the Carolina Writers jump all over it.

I have a hunch that the Bills will trade or cut Peerless Price in the preseason.

I doubt they will be able to trade him, but if they can get a conditional pick the possible trade partners:

Vikings

Titans

Reason: I am not a Price basher because I think he provided some significant production last year, (49 catches for 409 yards and three touchdowns ).....but the Bills have to find a way to get Roscoe Parrish on the field more often.

Why it might not happen: Cap hit. I think his cap hit would unbelievably be somewhere in the 2.5 Million range.

I doubt it. Just like last year, LT2 won't play in the pre-season.

Just curious now, if Maroney reinjured his shoulder, wouldn't it make sense for New England to go after Turner, especially if they can convince him to keep his current contract? Might make sense for Turner too - light up the NFL in his final year under the contract. :lmao:

The question would be what is New England willing to give up for a player whose GM was asking for a 1st and a 3rd?I understand they wouldn't give up that much but how much is too much for a one year player?

Asante Samuel... :lmao: (probably need more than Turner for him)

Colts:

5th Round Pick Roy Hall beats out Aaron Moorehead for the #4 WR spot. Hall has more athletic abilty than Moorehead, will be better on special teams, and being a teammate with former college teammate and workaholic Anthony Gonzalez will really help him develop.

Turner will not be traded this year and in the unlikely event that he was there is a 0.0000% chance that SD would trade him to NE.

Preseason:

Dan Orlovsky will outplay Jon Kitna in Detroit and win the starting QB job, effectively screwing up all the early drafts.

Regular Season:

The Patriots finish the season undefeated.

Reason:

They score like an Arena Football team averaging 62 ppg.

Hey, it could happen…

why would SD want to help NE? they might have to go face them to get to the SB

Rather than doing an "I'll call it now" thread for the whole season, I thought we could shy away from projections for a moment and focus solely on the preseason at hand. Who will impress/slump the most, what situations will change (depth charts, etc), who might unexpectedly get cut or traded DURING THE PRESEASON? It will be good to look at this in two months' time and see how many of these actually pan out.

Try to stay serious if you can (as in no "Peyton does his knee, Sorgi takes over and Marvin Harrison tells the media he sees himself setting career highs), and make it original from what others have already posted.

They don't all have to be world changing events. That way it will lead to more conversation about speculation raised and a few correct guesses.

I'll start off with something pretty basic...

Prediction: The Texans RB depth will be listed as Green, Gado, Walker. Ron Dayne doesn't make the team after a solid end to '06, even though Kubiak indicated a month ago that Dayne was well ahead of Lundy, Taylor and Gado on the depth chart.

Reason?: Green was bought in to be the starter, and should at least begin the season there. I like what Kubiak has had to say about Gado

"I'm impressed with what he's doing on the football field. He reminds me, I told him the other day, I had Mike Anderson in Denver that had a rough year one year and then all of a sudden came back in the offseason and it was like he was possessed the way he practiced and worked. It was like holy smokes. You watch the kid out here practice right now and his effort on the field is incredible. He plans on getting something done. I would be very surprised if he doesn't do it."
...and I think Darius Walker will really show them something after opting out of the Chicago contract to join Houston's crowded backfield, leaving the older Dayne out in the cold.
Prediction: Joseph Addai cracks the top 5Reason?: Because he's a stud

Here's a couple:

Brian Leonard leads the Rams in rushing and receiving in the preseason, leading to 5 posts a day from panicking Steven Jackson owners and hundreds of news articles about the glory days of the multi-purpose fullbacks of yesteryear- Csonka, Taylor, Riggins, et. al.

Chris Simms is cut by TB and winds up either backing up Manning in NY or Jackson in Minny.

Wow your reading my mind :goodposting:

As requested, these are predictions only for preseason, which of course aren't as fun and don't necessarily mean a whole lot.

1. Couch Potato will eat much pizza during the month of August while watching 4th stringers play on TV.

2. FBG posters will have 10,000 posts on why this or that 4th stringer will be a great sleeper after piling up big meaningless stats in the 2nd half of preseason games.

OK, those were guarantees. Here are some real predictions for the preseason:

QB

1. Culpepper will become a Jaguar and Garrard will be released. Leftwich will remain the starter though.

2. Derek Anderson will be the week one starter in CLE (though all 3 QBs will have their turn before the season is done).

3. Josh McCown will be the week one starter in OAK (though that will only last about 2-3 weeks before the Russell era begins).

4. Damon Huard will be the week one starter in KC based on preseason performances (but will lose the job as soon as there is a reasonable excuse to replace him -- a couple of bad regular season games and he's out).

5. Chris Simms will not be in Tampa Bay by the end of the preseason. I'll guess Atlanta.

RB

1. It will become clearer that Anthony Thomas will have a larger role in BUF than most now think, and this will dull the redraft value of Lynch. Knowledge of the offense and ability to help protect the QB will be a big reason for this.

2. Morency will be RB1 in GB (but nothing special) and Brandon Jackson will have enough trouble 'getting it' that the Packers will obtain Ricky Williams if he is reinstated in September.

3. De De Dorsey will be the RB2 in the IND RBBC and will surprise a lot of people with his talent. Rhodes will never be missed.

4. Larry Johnson will hold out all of preseason but will show up in time to start the season. By the way, this guy will end up killing a lot of fantasy owners' seasons who drafted him #3. Be warned.

5. People will realize Brandon Jacobs is a lot better than they thought. He'll rise in the rankings as he bulls his way through the preseason with a high YPC and distances himself from Reuben Sandwich Droughns.

6. Kevan Barlow, signed to compete with Davenport as FWP's backup, will be cut because it takes longer for him to get through the hole than for me to read a SSOG paragraph.

7. The 3-headed RB monster in TEN still won't be sorted out by the end of preseason, and the whole thing will remain a confused mess. Fantasy owners who burn 2 or 3 roster spots on these guys to cover their bases will regret doing so, as White becomes the top guy -- sort of -- but shares a lot and puts up weak numbers.

8. Portis will re-emerge as good as ever and will be seriously undervalued entering the season.

9. Corey Dillon will not find the starter role he is looking for but will not be ready to retire, so he'll sign on with MIA to take some of the load off Ronnie Brown. Ricky Williams will never wear a Dolphin uni again.

10. Kevin Jones will not be ready for the opener, will go on the 6-game PUP, and Tatum Bell owners will be temporarily excited -- until he is underused in a pass-happy offense that does not include him on routes.

WR

1. It will become clear that MIN will depend on Bobby Wade as their primary short-to-intermediate pass catcher. Think Furry-light from last year.

2. Maurice Stovall will earn the starting WR2 job in TB to start the year.

3. Devery Henderson will start in NO, but will return to his #3 role after a few games and Meachem takes over as starter.

4. Dwayne Jarrett, and not Drew Carter, will start for CAR to begin the regular season.

5. It will become evident that Ron Curry will emerge as the Raiders' #1 playmaker and focal point of their offense in preseason, and it will continue all year. 85-1100-8.

6. While Calvin Johnson will be a starter in DET from the get-go, he'll still have a lot to learn in their offense, and that will mean decent numbers for Furrey still and a monster year for Roy Williams.

7. Jeff Webb will begin the year opposite Kennison in KC, with Bowe playing a lot. Samie Parker will be released before the end of preseason.

8. People will see why PHI is high on Reggie Brown. He'll be McNabb's go to guy and have a role similar to Owens in his good days in Philly.

9. Despite a lot of talk to the contrary, Reggie Williams and Matt Jones will have one more chance to show they belong and will begin the year as starters in JAC.

10. Kevin Walter will start for HOU and will not be surpassed by anyone all year for the WR2 role. He'll have 45+ catches in 2007.

(Gotta go play a softball game -- maybe I'll do TEs when I come back).

EXCELLENT post thus far, CP. Exactly the kind of things being raised as I'd hoped upon the thread's creation.I think you're spot on with the Derek Anderson, LJ & Bobby Wade calls. Not sure how well Rod Curry will do though.

My apologies for it not being 'as fun' as regular season predictions, but pretty much the rest of the SP is season-based predictions. I was hoping for a couple of storylines to be created in here that people could speculate about for a while, rather than the fifty-ten threads we have about the Titans' backfield or if Joe Addai should be taken at the 5th, 6th 7th or 8th+ pick.

By 'preseason' I don't just mean the 4 weeks of games. I mean from camp until the start of the regular season. To suggest that events taking place in that month & a half (crucial roster and depth chart decisions) 'don't necessarily mean a whole lot' is crazytalk.
