I'm considering not drafting a kicker (1 Viewer)

Tell me if it's an idea worth considering...

I'm in a league where we are doing a messageboard draft. Our scoring is 6 pts per TD (all kinds) and 1 pt per 15 yards (rushing or receiving).

Roster requirements are QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB/WR, 1 D, 1 K

Because we can start 3 RBs (utilizing the flex), the top ones go off the board pretty quickly. However, after that, everybody seems to ignore running backs and fill other positions. I've got a bunch of RBs, but I see that Leon Washington has been ignored. Should I draft him (which would leave me without a kicker) on the idea that I could use him as some pretty valuable trade bait depending on the Thomas Jones injury situation. Obviously, I'd want to make a move before the season starts, but I there will still be decent kickers available on the waiver wire.

Advice?

This is borderline assistant coach forum material, but...

Assuming this move would be allowed by your league rules, I'd say go for it. Don't be shocked if someone complains, though. My guess is your league rules don't address the subject either way, so the commish could over-rule you.

At the very least, you get some insurance at RB with two more pre-season games still to come.

If your league has WW pick ups before the season and there is no rule saying you must have a starting roster at all times after the draft, I would do it and will be doing it.

My thoughts differ from many. Personally, it all depends on my league. If they get stupid and go on a run, I'll back off the position until the last round or later. However, if nobody bites early, and I'm in a later round (13-16) and I see somebody there who I know for a fact is going to be productive, and if it's too early to bounce on my sleepers, I'll take a shot and not have to worry about the position all year.

The strategy makes sense in a league that his small roster sizes. With large rosters I would just burn a spot on a kicker. The biggest problem is that unless you grab a backup RB and the starter goes down for the year, teams will know you need to make a move for a kicker and they probably won't offer you much unless news would come out that Jones would be out for a long time.

As it just turned out in my specific example, it's a moot point. I poised the question when there was one person to pick before my turn. Of course, you know what happened... Washington's off the board.

Nonetheless, I am still interested to hear thoughts about this approach as a general strategy.
