I'm moving to CT. Chose the Avon/Canton area (1 Viewer)

Yeah, Connecticut sucks, if you decide to be in CT all the time, and hang out in Hartford every night, or up in that weird corner where @rockaction grew up (Rebecca Lobo for the win).

But if you live a quick train ride from NYC, which would be a 1-1.5 hour drive from Hartford, you get most of the benefits of NYC without the negatives. And you are a few hours drive from a ton of stuff.

Thing about the Northeast, everything is close. From CT/NY line, you are two hours drive from good beaches, and a few more hours from better beaches, and the best skiing on the east coast.
Yep.  I lived a year in Stockbridge in the late 70s and did lots of exploring: Boston. Maine. Nova Scotia. Montreal, the Hamptons. VT. Etc. It's so compacted you can do tons of worthwhile adventuring if you're intrepid.

I told my parents I wouldn't move to Vegas while they were alive, so I will likely be here in Austin for a while yet. And with two shootings on Fremont Street last week and me getting creakier by the month, that unit in the Ogden is probably a pipe dream. A single-wide out in the hills seems more likely.

Anyone fish or hike the Farmington River? I walked along a bit of it in Collinsville last fall and looked great.  I think it's 50 miles long? I love to fish.

Anyone know General Contractors or architects that service the area?  I might just build what I want. I'm in no huge rush.

Paging @El Floppo. I do know one or two  GC’s in the area but pretty sure you need Chet type money to hire them.

You couldn't pay me to move to effin' Connecticut.  Unless it was to somewhere nice, like Old Lyme, Mystic, or maybe Greenwich.

I found a modest home on Secret Lake. Perfect location for me 15 minutes to my nephew scores of good restaurants, bars libraries, theaters. A couple of miles from the Farmington river, a block and a half from a nice little private lake, less than two hours to Boston and 2 1/2 to NYC.
I'm looking forward to escaping the Texas heat and doing a lot of adventuring in New England.
I'm leaving on Wednesday and closing seven days later.

I wish you were still in the area I'd like to have a beer with you sometime

Thanks, man. Likewise. Maybe someday I'll visit home again with some time to do so. I'll hit you up in advance if that ever happens. I hope your move goes smoothly and that you do indeed find the area peaceful and calming (it can be that way) -- and that it meets your needs.

So somebody talk to me about CT fishing.
For saltwater, would a party boat be good or should I do a charter.? Which towns have good launches and modestly priced guides? By modest, under a grand for two people, six hour trip, lots of fish, skinned and bagged.

For freshwater I prefer not trout. I like bass crappie, bream, walleye etc. . I prefer spincasting to to fly rods. I like peaceful, uncrowded small lakes or lazy rivers, preferably HP restricted or even no gas powered engines. I don't mind bank fishing at all as long as I catch fish. I'll probably start out with a pedal kayak if I'm not too old and fat. Anyone used one of those for fishing?
Thanks, Yankees.

I'd ask my father, but he's a trout guy/flyfisher. Used to tie his own lures and stuff. He fished the Farmington his entire adult life, but he hasn't been in over twenty or thirty years (bad back and degenerative body) and any information he could give you would be dated. No boat knowledge on his end, either.

And, as you might guess, the son did not inherit his father's pastime.

So I got bupkis for you. Sorry.

What about when I tell somewhere I live and want impress them?

Avon.

Saying "Farmington Valley" while you thump your chest should be enough. Nicely vague. Like you don't want people to follow you home or something. Mystery. Seclusion. All that.

one thing this thread made me think about is what different people from different parts of the country consider remote for instance i would never consider anything within an hour of boston remote or basically anything within an hour of an airport that can land a jet not trying to pick a fight just saying that perspective is interesting take that to the bank brohans

My front yard is in Avon and the back half is in Canton. Which should I claim as my residence?

If you had kids, Avon for the schools.
If you have property taxes, Canton is probably cheaper.

Tell them Avon if you want them to think you're the CEO of a Hartford insurance company.
Tell them Canton if you want them to think you're an double hazy juicy IPA hipster.

You'd be surprised by the dead of night and firefly light that CT has in summer and the cold and barrenness of its winter. It can seem real remote at times.

It's been so long since I went out while there or was young. Canton is hipster now?
There are a lot of breweries up that way now. You can make for a nice Saturday hitting a few of them along a short span of road. I actually like Canton and Collinsville, a lot more than Avon. It's like Avon is still old money and new folks are heading just past it where it's a little younger and "hipster" in spots.

My brother is a lunatic outdoorsman and fishing junky, he has one or two guys he uses for charters, groups and such. I can see who his guys are if you like. I think they are based out of Narragansett area

Good luck on the move to CT. FWIW, and this was in the 70's, did some fishing on the Sound with my uncle for bluefish. Basically followed the seagulls and whipped the lures in the water and cranked the lure in as fast as we could. Rinse and repeat.caught many fish and there was a lot of action. Doesn't sound like your preference for a kayak on a quiet lake. 😀

That would be fantastic

Ten Miles West of Boston is WICKED remote.

:lastofus:

So I'm here. Despite moving voting 120% of estimate, final house clean 300% of estimate, a belligerent Solar Company holding up the closing until 10pm, and St. Louis Bob not letting me pay for dinner, I'm here and I'm at peace, although there will be a few forthcoming, scathing Google reviews.

It's chilly here and rainy almost every day, but I'm okay with that.

We're really happy to be here and hope to have the house properly remodeled by the end of the year. High cost of materials and lack of decent contractors are as prevalent here as they were in Austin.
So far so good

Bluefishing is a blast, even if they taste like oily mackerel. It's been decades since I've done it, but hope to find a cheap charter when they're running (not a kayak thing).

My other brother is a contractor in MA, about an hour from there. I asked him if he had some Hartford guys to call. He said no, they "they are all sketchy af, lol" so yeah, you might wanna wait till you get a decent referral.

By the way:

Roger Karr, Tight Line Charters, that's his guy. Runs all types. (y)

I’m about 30 minutes away but ct contractors are notorious for price gouging upscale towns. Suggest contractors outside of Avon.

Hoping to find some decent ones in Torrington.
Let's have a beer!

Important question: where's the cheapest place to buy booze in New England? CT is 20-30% higher than TX.
Willing to travel a couple of hours.
Asking for a friend.

New Hampshire, but for liquor and wine only. The state owns and runs the stores, but does not sell beer. No sales tax and they offer sales that are 10-20% lower than CT liquor stores. We make a day trip up I-91 once every couple months to stock up.

Thanks. Their prices definitely worth a trip.
I love the NE IPAs, but they're certainly proud of them
