iPad (1 Viewer)

Is apple ever going to wow again? Another ho humm release thats as expected and lower than hoped. Im sure sales, which is all that really matters, soar once again though.
How is this not a 'wow'? It delivered on every single request people were making.
Not quite. I'm still buying it, but lets at least be honest. Realistic or not, there were several rumors out there that didn't come to fruition. Part of that is Apple being a victim of their own success. But part of that is due to the hype they and their fanboys create.
Which rumors did they miss on? The touch screen that changed textures? Or maybe the edge to edge, magnet locking, display expanding, holographic projector features? Please they hit everything a sane person expected. This isn't Star Trek.....yet.
it was a refresh only. Nothing Wow or amazing. They didn't even put a full version of Siri on it.
These were all the "Wow" features everyone complained was missing from the iPad 2. Now you get them all and it's just a refresh? :loco:
I agree with goonsquad. It would seem to me enjoying the tablet experience is 90% the screen you are using, the speed of your connection to fill that screen with content, and the battery life to be completely mobile the entire time. Apple was 3/3 on that score. This is the first Apple product I've been tempted to purchase since the iPod Nano. I feel bad for the people that bought the iPad2 less than a year ago, or worse yet the people that ran to get the original iPad. This iPad3 seems like the original concept is fully being realized.

Apple sent exactly one email invitation to the press leading up to this event. How exactly is that "hype"? Let's be honest here, Tommy. The hype isn't from Apple or even the fanboys, it's from the media and bloggers that live off of page views and channel ratings.
Which fanboy beat up GunZ to make him so bitter?

It was a tough journey, but I forged ahead and voluntarily spent $635 (32GB wifi - white) to play games while taking a #### and watch more things in bed.

White, 32GB wifi only with a tan leather smart cover on the way.
I didn't get a smart cover. I just wanted to order the #### without thinking of a damn color. I figure I can get this later once I figure out whether it's really necessary. Although I guess if I was bringing it on a plane, I would want one. I should be able to pick this up though at an apple store or order it separately no problem, right?

I'm so bitter I just ordered an iPad 3, despite already having the original iPad. And a Mac Air. But yeah, I don't swing from Job's rotting nutsack, so I'm a hater.

Is anyone having problems with iTunes/app store today?

There is a new Terms and Conditions agreement to sign but when it tries to load it, it just sits there forever. Both my iPad and iPod touch are having the same issue

It's hard to believe I agree with goonsquad twice in the same day but he's absolutely right here too. The worst offender by far imo is CNET. I honestly think they must have an internal policy where they can't mention any tech device without adding how it compares to an Apple device. If you got all your news from CNET you would assume apple represents about 90% of the computer industry. Now that the details are fleshed out on the ipad3 expect daily iphone5 "rumors" without a single quote to back anything up. I think CNET is just trying to generate page hits by starting troll-wars between apple-android fans everyday.

How about at least the features that were "no brainers" according to some, like SIRI?
It is pretty funny that many of the people that seemed all too eager to explain to us that the iPhone4s was a leap forward because SIRI was this major game changer.... suddenly don't care if it's included in the major launch of another mobile device. For those of us that thought it was kind of a hokey feature to begin with it wasn't really missed. But it does kind of underline how hollow all that talk really was.

Well, seeing your Maddow and Rainbow Fist avatar's over the year or so, I figured you would be one to not generalize a group of people so fast like a lot of others do. Guess that makes you just like them now.

I've already addressed this but I'll clarify my stance here. Would it have been nice to have the full version of Siri included? Sure! However, I think siri is a LOT more important on a cell phone 9something you have on you all the time and is always connected to the internet) than on a media consumption device. Most of what I used SIRI for is things while I'm on the go. I certainly have no intention of lugging my iPad around. One aspect of Siri that IS important for a media consumption/browser device of this type is the voice recognition. Thankfully they were smart enough to include that on this new iPad.

Given the network requirements of the assistant aspects of Siri, and how the insane demand for the 4s has, at times, overloaded Apple's Siri servers.... I can completely understand why they stripped out the assistant functionality for now. I fully expect it to be implemented once Siri is polished a bit, the infrastructure is in place, and the functionality of Siri is expanded to be of more use in the feature-set that iPad is most used for.

Of course that's just my .02. Mild letdown but nothing too major, all things considered. And I don't think anyone expected you to have anything positive tosay in this thread so not entirely sure why you even bothered poking your head in. ;)

I'm well aware of the tech blog's participation, but goons' suggestion that the hype doesn't come from Apple or it's fanboys doesn't pass the laugh test. TCrunch (MG Seigler is the biggest tool on the web), Engadget, Gizmodo, etc all participate and make it worse. But the hype over "game changer" and "amazing" and "revolutionary" all starts with Apple themselves, and their droids. As a stockholder, I love it. It's fantastic. But lets be honest about what it is, an over the top, yet brilliant marketing campaign.

I have an original iPad and love it. While I'm sure this one is going to be awesome, it doesn't make me like mine any less.

:goodposting: I concur. Good for texting and doing things hands-free in the car. Can't really envision needing it on an ipad at home. Down the road as it evolves? Sure great.

I guess I just chalk all that up to car-salesmanship, but you're right not many companies can describe their products as "magical" without much sense of irony and get away with it.I still believe it's the tech elites that you mention that lead the drum beat even more than apple. It's a lazy way of getting page hits, say something controversial involving apple or claim you have a "scoop" about an upcoming apple device. I've fallen for it a few times - they never have anything but completely wild speculation. It's the tech version of "Star" magazine or "the National Enquirer" imo.

I have no idea when I would use Siri on an Ipad. The only time I ever use it on my iphone is when I'm driving in heavy traffic, and use it to call home.

As a whole, I'm not a big fan of Siri. Reminds me of being in an automated phone system, which usually has me screaming at the automated voice in frustration.

lol. That's the funny thing. Apple has built a device that most people browse the net, play videos and read...and yet it's the hottest thing in the world. Let's be honest, the games for tablets suck. It's like they've duped us all into going back 15 years for games, and yet we all bought in hook line and sinker.

Could someone explain how 4g is only on AT&T
I was the one that posted that. I was watching the techcrunch live feed and to be honest the two people on there seemed clueless as the feed went on. From what they said it would be initially only available in 4G on ATT, then wouldcome out on VZW. HOWEVER I would take that with a grain of salt because, again, these two seemed lost while on camera.
If this is true, then the "4G" will be useful in a handful of locations. I know people won't think about that, but I still can't believe it

Ever since T-Mobile and AT&T began touting their HSPA+ networks as "4G," the debate on the term's legitimacy has raged on. Regardless of how you feel about the matter, one thing's for sure: Apple's finally taken sides on the argument, and the company's all for it. In today's iOS update, Cupertino features an "updated AT&T network indicator," which means you'll see a 4G icon whenever you're in HSPA+ coverage. Granted, this doesn't actually mean you'll enjoy faster speeds -- you'll just have a warm and fuzzy feeling knowing that another G just got added to your screen. Such an action makes us wonder if Apple's slowly losing its ability to stand up against AT&T's wishes, not to mention the demands of other US carriers.

Any clue how long it usually takes amazon to start carrying new apple products? I've got almost $500 in Amazon gift cards, so I could pick up a 32GB with very little cash out of pocket.

Looking at the 4G coverage maps for both AT&T and Verizon... It sucks unless you live in a major city.

Crosseyed, it seems to be like going from a tube tv to an HD tv. If you use it for movies and videos of any type, I would do it.

If you have any doubts, try and control yourself for a week or two, until you can actually get to a Best Buy and visualize the difference to see if it's worth it.

In. Have put off Apple products for years (including a rather new Samsung Google Nexus phone), but after playing with an iPad a few weeks ago, had to admit nothing else compared (I'm speaking of you Mr. Android tablet).

32GB Black with 4G Verizon chip. Someone shoot me if I start looking at MacBook Pros next...

iPad $399.11:19 am iPad 2 staying on sale!
Yeah, I can't understand why anyone would drop 4 bills on the 2 when the new iPad is just $100 more.
Exactly. They walk in thinking they'll buy a iPad 2, and walk out with a New iPad for just a $100 more.
This only works on the unintelligent. An adopter of the tablet sees the $400+ price as not a good bargain nor one that wants to be taken. If a person alhas not adopted this technology before, they won't for $400 either. This is where I am. I have not purchased a tablet yet but I will not adopt it either at that price tag since a case is "needed". Move the point to $300 and I'm all in and ready.

So the consensus is that the new iPad is worth $150 more than the iPad 2? I'm still leaning toward the refurb.
If you have one near you, Microcenter has new iPad 2's for $360.I don't think the new iPad is worth the difference. Better off buying an iPad 2 and waiting for the real iPad 3.
What's the "real iPad 3"? I haven't been following this release that much, I already have an iPad 2 and already it's use is going down and don't see a compelling need to upgrade.

Im confused really by some of the criticism. I dont see this new ipad as the iPad2s. Actually i think this is a bigger upgrade from the 2 than the 2 was from the original. The HD screen is huge.

I've got the original iPad, and if I broke it today I wouldn't regret purchasing it. I'll upgrade eventually, and I'm sure the new iPad is outstanding, but I'm glad I didn't wait to buy one.

Yea I don't get that comment. I paid 500 bucks for my iPad some 2 years ago and have used it daily since. Why would I wait 2 years.

I can't believe that memory garners these kinds of premiums. We should be up to 256 Gb like it's nothing by now.
THIS!IMO this is the biggest beef I have with the iOS system (that other manufacturers have fallen in line with)... It frustrates me that we pay 100 bucks for 16gb or 32gb of flash memory in this day. Yes, 5 years ago that would be a ridiculous statement but IMO apple will have to look at this within the next generation or two. They can't hold off cheap swappable flash storage forever... Cloud or no cloud.

If you have a 2 I don't see the need to the upgrade for a better (albeit verrry nice) screen and better camera. As for the chip, I don't see it being much faster and the improved GPU was needed to run it at such a high resolution.
