iPad (2 Viewers)

I love when these devices are announced. I still can't figure with is more entertaining....those complaining about features not being provided or those defending Apple at all costs as to why they aren't provided with the "you're using it wrong" and "that's not what it's for" kinds of arguments. Gets me every time.
I assume this is directed at my previous post? I am far from an apple apologist. I use both apple and windows PCs and prefer windows. I just lay it out as I see it. The ipad isnt comparable to a laptop. A laptop wins every time IMO if that is the choice you are making. But the ipad has a place if you are looking for something to compliment your computer.
Pretty sure this is directed at my tongue in cheek lashing of the HDMI/Removable media stalwarts above. Your post was very fair and balanced... I took mine a little to the other side of where the naysayers were sitting for kicks.
Why is it hard for me to believe this is shtick?

Ok, I canceled the smart cover portion of my order. I think I like something like what Aaron posted a little bit better. Anyone have any experience with a good cover/case that they'd recommend?

I still don't understand what the iPad does that the iPhone or laptops don't do better.
not really fair to compare to either as its not meant to replace either - but if I had to...what is better then iphone is obvious I think.Better then laptop - portability, weight, quick start, better battery, viewing media (for the most part), fewer software/hardware issues (generally)worse then laptop - productivity, multi tasking, multi browser windows, keyboard, storage, ports, external media, flash
:goodposting: It's going to come down to personal preference, but the portability and weight is what sets the tablet apart from everything else for me. When the original iPad came out, I was totally against it and didn't see how it'd replace my laptop. Yet here I am laptop free with an iPad2. If you have kids, this thing doubles as a fantastic learning aid that's super easy for them to use. It's amazing watching my 5 and 3 year old boys fly through this thing like they've been using it for 10 years.
The best thing about the Asus Transformer is that it's the best of both worlds with the keyboard dock. When you want to use it as a laptop you can and when you only want the tablet it's easy to remove. The original reason I bought a tablet is for my 3 yo and it is amazing for her.

Shipped. March 15 arrival. :thumbup:So the smart cover is a hustle?
Depends on what you want out of a cover. I love the smart cover because it is elegant, adds practically zero bulk to the iPad while protecting the screen and adding functionality in terms of being a stand. I also love the magnetized closure that automatically wakes/sleep the iPad. But it not great for all-around protection, isn't a keyboard, and is very pricey.

Sure, but is it magical? Is it?Yeah, I didn't think so.

would be cool if it ran iOS instead of android

Alright, I'm sick of searching around for the "right" answer as I have spent the last 20 minutes on the AT&T site, a variety of forums, google, etc. trying to find an answer to this relatively simple question.

I just ordered the 32GB Black Wifi iPad with the blue leather cover.

I own an iPhone4 and am using AT&T with the unlimited data plan.

How much is it going to cost me to tether my iPhone to my iPad?

Is it only the extra $20/month charge to add the ability to tether?

Do I have to change from the unlimited plan to another plan on my iPhone because I want to tether? I just checked and over the last 6 months I have been under 2GB every month but one where I as at 2.3GB.

how is typing on an ipad? I assume it's like an iphone but on a bigger scale. anyone have any experience using something like this?http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0054L7FVWalso, these cases seem to get great reviews on amazon:http://www.amazon.com/Snugg-Leather-Cover-Stand-Black/dp/B004QIPH5Uhttp://www.amazon.com/CaseCrown-Standby-Built--magnet-Covers/dp/B004R7A9NUnot sure any fit the new ipad but I assume updated versions will be available soon.
IMO if you're going to want to type a LOT, then I'd just stick with the laptop. I've never used those though so I can't speak to them. I will say that the onscreen keyboard is actually surprisingly easy to get used to on your lap or on a table. I am a touch typist and I can type about 70-80pct speed on the iPad.

I love the smart cover. If you're gonna get one, spend the $ and get the leather. The poly is kinda cheap.

Typing is a little cumbersome IMO. I have the second case you posted for my iPad2 and it is very cool.

I like the idea of the strap that is on the first case that secures it a bit to your hand as you are holding it. Can anyone that has an iPad comment on how necessary/helpful this might be?

Yes/No?Come on, there has to be someone that knows this.

Sorry, I don't have ATT but I think ATT charges $20/mo for tethering, yes. I don't know if it requires you to kill the Unlimited plan or not. It makes sense to assume that if you're tethering your iPad you will likely use more data than you had in the past.

That's on you GB, but I'd not rack your brain too much on it. What you believe is of little consequence to me. :P
I think my problem is at some point shtick breaks down. Perhaps we haven't hit that phase yet, but that would require some major kudos for consistency that I've never seen here before.
Am I an apple fanboy? Of course. Did I dial up the shtick with the wireless jabs? Of course. That should get you most of the way there :P

apple care doesn't cover water damage. maybe not as much of a concern with an ipad, but my first iphone died from going in a lake and apple just replaced it for $200 (same cost I had to pay with my initial AT&T 2-year contract).

do people use a screen protector on ipads like they would with an iphone?

I'm no pro, but there are magnetic flip over covers. I think it would have prevented the cracks in mine had I been using the day I dropped it (it cracked because it landed on a corner). :(

 the screen is pretty stout. I don't use a screen protector. Hell I try to carry it "naked" most of the time, unless i need the added juice from my Boost Battery Case. IMO it's a great looking phone... why cover it up. The GF has a custom engraved bamboo case on her iPad but only because she likes the look and it was a gift (from me)

I'm not asking about a screen protector for the phone. I use one on mine, but that gets carried around in a pocket and could get scratched very easily.I'm asking if people use them on the ipad. Would suck to get a scratched screen on that thing.

talking about something like these: http://www.amazon.com/Premium-Crystal-Clear-Screen-Protectors/dp/B003D8GAA0

the reviews for that one specifically look bad. With a case on it though, I'm guessing this isn't necessary anyway. Just was curious.

Yeah, I've not put a screen protector on my 4S and I don't have a single scratch on it. Not planning on putting one on my iPad, but I will be buying some kind of case/cover. Just can't decide if I want a portfolio-type case or just something like a smart cover.

I've had my 4s loose in my pocket with my keys without a screen protector for about 4 months now without a single scratch.
That said if you're worried about something heavy dragging across it somehow then I guess you could play it safe. Personally I'm not concerned. The screen replacements aren't too expensive anyways if by some freak of nature you manage to scratch it.

I've had a screen protector on my iphone 4 pretty much as long as I've owned it and don't even notice it. There's a scratch in the screen protector right now and I haven't bothered to replace it yet, but that's a lot easier to do than to actually replace the glass. I guess the screen cover probably scratches easier than the glass does though.

Like I said, I'll probably have a case for the ipad so that should be good enough.

Rude, my wife's iPad OG has been dropped, walked on, thrown up on, basketballs dropped on it, keys dropped on it - you name it. When she takes 30 seconds to wipe it clean it looks brand new after 2 years of hard use.

Screen is virtually unscratchable.

http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/10/applecare-plus-update/so, the coverage costs $100 and you have to pay a $50 service fee when you replace it.meanwhile, I had no coverage and got a brand new replacement phone for $200 just from walking into an apple store and giving them my dead phone with no questions asked.insurance on electronics is a scam.

They're a waste for either iPad or iPhone. I've never had a scratch on either of mine and have been abused by three kids 5 and under.

I have been using these Antibacterial Screen Protectors on both my iPad and iPhone. They are imbedded with nano silver that kills 99.99% of germs. They are expensive, but I got mine for free.

These work but like anti-bacterial soap it is helping create antibiotic resistant bacteria. Nano-silver is used in the medical field because other things have stopped working. The overuse of nano-silver is going to eventually make it useless.
