iPhone app for Footballguys? (1 Viewer)

For you iPhone gurus out there. Everyone wants and iphone app. But when I ask what exactly a Footballguys iPhone app would do, it's not as clear.

If FBG were to do an iPhone app, what kind of things would one reasonably expect it to do?

What app out there would be comparable?

Thanks.

J

Draft Dominator would be a start.

If FBG were willing to partner with MFL, an MFL live scoring/team manager app would be kickin'

As I said in the FFA, the Fanball app may seem simple, but I think it's a good one to get out the news and your views.

don't know how it would work, but DD on the iphone would be amazing.
i was actually thinking about this this morning. Probably, most of FBGs apps would be doable for iPhone. even the mag could be converted as well as Rank My Team. The app could have different sections; SOS, matchups, FF News, Podcasts, etc.

if the mag was converted from pdf to html it could be read in mag form with stanza or better yet the kindle app

its simple but its done right . MMA Torch does a real good job delivering content via their app .The fantasy segment and even sports in general is pretty empty in the app storeI'd like to see -schedules, news blogger , player rankings rankings , cheat sheets ,podcasts & staff articles and a direct portal to the boards

I think the DD lite program would be good for a iphone app.

Be able to support multiple leagues (up to a certain number like 5)

Determine which projections will be used (allow weighting of each staffers projections like the projections dominator)

Incorporate league scoring, draft order, and other team names.

Allow keepers to be allocated to their teams if need be.

Have "Best Available" like the DD has, then overall rankings, then position rankings.

Allow to input the draft picks for each team.

See rosters for each team before and after the draft.

Also be able to run My Team mock drafts and clear rosters.

Then Rate My Team functionality if possible.

**********

I would so love to have this as an app. Especially since I run most of my drafts on the fandraft software on my laptop, being able to look at my rankings without having someone look over my shoulder at my screen would be freakin' amazing.

My thoughts would be draft dominator. How cool would it be to be waiting in line at your bank and be able to wip off a mock draft. I could also see this as being cool at drafts. You wouldn't have to tote a laptop around...just your phone. The biggest problem I would see is being able to save the draft file and somehow be able to get it to your computer. Projections dominator would also be a cool app. Again somehow transferring the file to a computer would be the difficult part I think. But, it would be great to just be able to mess with projections on the train, or in line, or on the toilet.

For those who are interested I found an easy solution for the magazine on my ipod touch. I just used safari to download the magazine (you need the wifi setup of course) and I am able to view the file offline. So I can still read it on the throne with no problem for all those who were complaining about that.

I just basically want all the features of FBG's in the convenience of my phone. The great thing about apps is it makes everything so simple. It's not as if it is difficult to bring up the actual webpage, but the app is so much more user friendly and much more enjoyable to use.

I'd use it to look at depth charts, rankings, projections on a daily basis. For example, there should be a link you can touch to open up each position and see rankings and projections.

App is the new Black, you guys need one!!

I think the full version of DD would be possible. One of the cool things about the iphone/itouch is that you can flip the screens, so why couldn't you have player pool, best availible, teams, etc. all on separate screens and just be able to flip through them. I'm drooling just thinking about it.

As others have said, the DD app would be a Godsend.

Great to get that functionality in such a mobile platform. Great to bring to the draft and great to participate in an ongoing online draft that I could check in throughout the day and could make my picks wherever I was without having to find my way in front of a computer.

Also, in a (partially) related topic, a mobile version of the website and message board would be much easier to navigate from mobile devices. I am entirely ignorant however to how much of an effort that would be.

1. Start with a mobile version of the site. Check out ESPN on an iPhone. Most of the same content, but formatted for an iPhone (I believe this is because it is written AJAX or some other language). Would be great if I could go to m.footballguys.com, for example, and see each week's features. Want to see the recap for PIT-SD game? Click. Want to see Waiver Wire report? Click.

2. Once you have a mobile site, you can easily build a iPhone app that takes advantage of the mobile-formatted content. See CBS Sports' iPhone app. Not much different than their mobile web page, but does add some neat features.

3. Make MyFBG for the iPhone app. I'd like to be able to easily look at projections, SOS, etc with the click of button on my iPhone. And change my rosters accordingly. I think MyFBG is a great place to start because subscribers have already inputted their league and roster info. You don't have to collect it on the iPhone. But it gives the user a very personalized experience.

Tweet me if you want more input (vote4parag).

I wish I knew more about writing code, but the iPhone is essentially a computer. I'm not saying it can handle NASA calculations, but I've seen some pretty complicated apps on the iPhone. FBGs would basically be only limited by their imagination & the ability of their developers.

Since the iPhone can track motion and acceleration, you could do a "NFL Combine" app. It would tell you how to setup each drill they do and you do it holding the phone, recording your 40 time, 3 cone drill, vertical leap, even take a Wonderlic test. Then it would show your ranking among the current draft class.

Don't leave the G1 out of this, since it is better than the Iphone. It could show latest news, schedule, DD, your team, forums. Basically everything the site does, only smaller.

If by better you mean "a phone no one cares about". It would be great to load up your players of interest, and then have the first screen of the app have all of those players' info - stats, projections, latest news - on the first screen. Then have tabs for overall stats, projections, news and news for the league overall.

While I like the android OS the hardware on the G1 comes up really short but it is promising. Unfortunately the #s aren't there compared to the iphone .and btw besides DD I can & do surf the site on my iphone with safari and have no problems at all

or against other FBGs

An iPhone App that simply made the website iPhone friendly would be a good start. Easy access to rankings, articles, newsblogger depth charts and the message board would be great.

+1

My league is talking about having a big lake party for our draft this year and having draft dominator on my iphone would keep me from lugging my laptop out there. would be awesome.

An iphone optimized interface to the forums and website would be far more useful than any specific FBG iphone app.

I would love to be able to read the forums -- the lo-fi version works okay, but doesn't let you keep track of read posts as easily -- and easily read posted articles. It is possible to do this currently, but cumbersome.

Could not agree more that this application would be fantastic. As stated above, just being able to access the site in a more workable format would be a great start. DD would be one heck of a time killer!

 Seriously... it's like everyone wants to knock off the iPhone but the fact is not one has come up with an iPhone killer yet.. and if anyone does it will probably be Apple themselves. Look at what the Palm Pre did over the weekend. It's not even close to being a threat to the iPhone. The iPhone redefined what a smart phone should be... and even though it has some serious shortcomings (like no removable data storage slot for starters) no one has yet been able to build a better overall device. The interface is still smoother than any other device I've tried (even with some griping about the keyboard, I find the Pre's no better). And the app store was one of the smartest things Apple did, because Android and WebOS application libararies are light years behind, and may never catch up.

There's no need for an app to do that... just a better designed site.

Not sure if it means anything, but the new iphone 3.0 OS update is coming out on June 17th. I'm sure the updates to the SDK can be taken advantage of for a FBG app/DD app.

Those knocking the G1 and Android OS just haven't spent enough time with it yet. The new update did wonders to the phone. I have no problem surfing this site with my phones browser.

The Android market is coming along, apple wasnt perfect either when its store first came out. I find the G1 hardware right on par with apples. I have had both and G1 wins. I haven't tried the Iphone 2.0 either so who knows.

DD would be poor on the iPhone, you need a larger screen and multiple windows open for it to be effective. Could be done next year, but start simple for now.

I think the best thing would be a FBG Draft Kit. You're at your draft, or preparing for it, you open up the app. and have instant access to all players outlook with projections, Expert Rankings, Depth Chart, SoS and a few other things in the subscriber area. You could use the new push technology for updates for injuries and depth charts changes during camp. Having it up to date is key as most projections and cheatsheets are notoriously out of date come the end of August.

Charge a few $$ for the app at most. This may not change the lives for people on this site, though it would certainly be useful, but I'll bet a ton of people cruising around iTunes would buy it.

Other stuff like live scoring would be cool but would need constant connections and would probably drain the battery.

iPhone price is being slashed to $99. Expect lots of new iPhone users. I think the fantasy site with the best iPhone-friendly mobile site (not necessarily apps) can build a lot of stickiness this season. If you wait another season, you'll miss the both.

Disagree 100%. The three windows you would need the most are player pool, teams, and position count. If you wrote a good app, you could flip through all the screens you have open. Also I would definitely design it so you could have the phone vertical or horizontal.

 Good opportunity to separate footballguys from the pack in fantasy football websites. We're a busy society and being able to easily access information (and change lineups) wherever we are on Sunday would give footballguys a leg up on the rest.

I would love to see a FBG app that has if not all then most of the MyFBG features. And also a DD app that can work offline, like on an iPod Touch. That would be huge because a lot of people have the iPod Touch, but not the iPhone. And plus, my Dad could show up some guys in our league by drafting off his iPod Touch.

If I could pick just ONE thing for a FBG app to do, it would be a version of the DD. That's not to say there aren't a slew of other functions that would be awesome as well, but some of the things discussed can already be accessed on the FBG website using an iPhone (albeit perhaps more awkwardly than they would be with an app for them), but there really is no effective substitute currently for a DD app for anyone who doesn't have a pc with them.I also agree with one of the earlier posters who pointed out that with the $99 iPhone out now (not to mention the new iPhone 3GS), this is a great time marketing-wise to put out a FBG Draft Dominator app -- it could bring in many new subscribers.

What about us crackberry bros? How do we go unnoticed! I view this site everyday from my bb. Ps bb >iphone

Even though the DD sells for considerably more than $.99 the volume of business you can do through iTunes is so high that I think that, with decent placement under iTunes, this could be a much more profitable app for FBG than the current DD model.

I am getting my first iphone tomorrow. As I understand it, most apps are $.99 and rely on the low price and large volume to make money. If the app had in-season features above and beyond DD, my guess is that it could stake a claim to FF market in the iphone.

Also, I'd recommend getting a feature on the iphone page of macrumors.com. They seem to highlight the release of new apps when there isn't news about the actual upgrades of the iphone itself. This would be most likely featured in August, leading up to football season.

For starters, I'd just want the blogger updates on my players. I guess thats in the MyFBG section of the site, not sure?

But being able to see update and then have the recommended starters based on projections would be crucial.

Of course, weekly projections/rankings are a no brainer.

And an iphone friendly version of the messageboard.

Roll out with those three main functions and you have a solid start.

ETA: As far as DD goes, I'm not sure the iphone can handle such a complex program, and disagree that it would be a smart fit for an FBG App. Maybe you could try to put together a discrete DD app, but again, given my experience with iphone apps, it might be trying to do too much.
