IR????? (1 Viewer)

Why are teams waiting so long to place players that are definitely out for the season on IR? (Ware, Meredith and Enunwa)

It's sort of like why have I not yet cut Calvin Johnson on my dynasty team? Very slim chance he ends up playing but it's that sliver of a chance and rosters aren't due to be cut down yet. When NFL teams need to cut down these guys will be moved to IR but it's not cut down yet.

I believe it has to do with players having to clear waivers to go on IR. I believe (not totally sure) that at a certain point players can go on IR and not get poached by another team.

I'm not sure if I completely understand the new IR rules but the way I understand it is, players with less than 4 accrued seasons cannot be placed on IR in the preseason without going through waivers.  The reason for the rule is so that teams cannot just stash young players by IR'ing them prior to cutdown.   In order to avoid the risk of losing them, they need to be on the final 53 man roster, then they can be IR'd.

It's an opportunity to get out of a contract and about the only way to do so. They can reach an injury settlement with a player if they wanted to. IR settlements are usually half of LTBE salary for that year- not usually the whole contract.

While I doubt this is the case with Meredith, the Chiefs might be interested in this with Ware. They're 6.5 mil under the cap. The difference between releasing him now and 2018 is only $300k and change. They could wait and see how his rehab goes and how he does when he returns.

I think paying him half of this year's salary and signing him to a deal contingent on him making the roster in 2018 is in their best interest. If he thinks he's a 1000 yard back and all, then it'd give him a chance to get that written into his contract as a bonus.

As I see it, they are fine with the rook and West. If Spiller isn't there in 2018 then they can draft a third RB or stick with Redding. I don't think they have to have Ware. Don't forget Hill and Thomas can play RB. Ware may have got injured at the worst time in the worst scenario.

Enunwa is a free agent after 2017 so the Jets are probably anxious for him to take half his salary in an injury settlement. It may "just" be 300k but he isn't playing and earning it. (Yes I think teams should pay injured guys, but I don't think owners always think this way)

Players do not go on waivers before going on IR.  Any injured player who will take a significant time to recover can go on IR.

Players who do not make the 53 man roster on cut down day  have to go through waivers IF they have less than 4 years of accrued NFL seasons.

Drafted players and UFAs who do not make the 53 have to clear waivers before they can go  a practice squad.  Any team claiming one of these players must put them on their 53 man roster.

Does these changes to roster cut down deadlines mean that NFL teams will have to place players on IR by this Sunday's deadline?  Or am I misunderstanding the details?

Anarchy was right.  You go straight to IR after a certain date, but during the preseason, players have to clear waivers with less than 4 years in the league.

3. Injured players with 4+ seasons of service time can be immediately placed on Injured Reserve (IR).

4. Up until the final cutdown date, injured players with less than four years of service cannot go onto IR without first passing through waivers. Those players are released with the “waived/injured” designation. Known as “injury waivers,” this process exposes the player to waivers, but warns other teams that the player is injured. If the player clears injury waivers, the team can then either place the player on IR or agree to an injury settlement (paying the player for the weeks that he is expected to be recovering from his injury) and then release the player.

saturday ( after cut down)

is when they go on ir

This isn't entirely correct.  There are two categories of players - "Vested Veterans" and Non-vested Players.  Any player that has accrued 4 years of seniority is a Vested Veteran.  Vested Veterans do not need to clear waivers before being placed on IR, but Non-vested Players do.  Those players are put on waivers with the designation Waived/Injured and, if they clear waivers, the team can then reach an injury settlement, paying them some agreed partial salary and they are then a Free Agent, or place them on Injured Reserve, thus keeping their existing contract terms in place.

Tannehill was already placed on IR
Because he's a Vested Veteran he wasn't subject to waivers so they had no risk of losing him.

In a similar thought, who are the players that can likely fill a fantasy IR slot the first few weeks?

D Booker

A Luck

Gotta be more, who am I missing?

You're right, they won't be on NFL IR. I'm interested in guys who can live on your league IR slot for a few weeks if your league allows any.

Do suspended players go on IR immediately or not until the suspension is over? Big difference in dynasty leagues.
