Iran attacks US base in Iraq (1 Viewer)

Article from NPR showing satellite damage to bases and some interesting talking points (buildings appear to be storage rather than barracks and look to be hit pinpointed and dead-on, implying intent to avoid casualties...bases had early warning systems providing time to react)
Their ballistic missiles are not advanced enough to pinpoint targets from that far.  Hell, our ballistic missiles might not be that advanced.  You can't have a quarter of your missiles fail miserably and the others make pinpoint strikes.  Most likely, they went after those bases because they knew they had fewer missile defense systems.  People keep saying there's a bigger base closer to Iran they could've targeted, but I'm guessing that base has Patriot missiles and a much stronger defense system.  They went after those bases because they thought they could hit it hard and cause the most casualties.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but I see reports saying they think the airliner was brought down by a Russian missile.  Does that mean they Russians fired it?  Or are they saying it was a Russian made missile the Iranians fired?

I read it as the latter.

Not sure about the plane but the rest of the incidents seem to go about as well as possible given how bleak it looked Tuesday night.

Totally agree. Terrorist is dead.   No US casualties when Iran had to do something to look strong to civilians.   The US won this round nicely.

Trudeau just said Canada has intelligence saying the same. Ugh. Lots of Canadian victims on that plane.
There's alleged video from the ground that shows a missile hitting it. Pretty clearly shows missile burner and then impact/explosion in the night sky. Whether it's verified as from there and not doctored, I dunno. But very clear.

Back on topic with me (I'm trying here): So what does this do with President Trump/Russia and NATO vis a vis the Ukraine and the Russia/Iran sort of axis that's been going for years? This doesn't bode well at all geopolitically, and is still bigger than others might make it.

I'm just looking at the players and their actions.

I sincerely hope not.

I'm not going to get personal with politics, but there were warnings before the last election about Trump and his seriousness regarding NATO. How serious is the organization going to be about this incident if we find Russian interference in this? What is to be done?

This could be ugly.

So Iran shot that plane down for giggles?
Certainly not.  I would assume that someone on the ground screwed up.

I'm sure all AA batteries were up and scanning, given that this was 4 hours after Iran launched their Scud-style missiles at the two Iraqi air bases and inbound US counter-strikes could have been expected.

Their AA system is somewhat more informal than one would expect.  Two groups (normal anti-air forces, and the Iran Revolutionary Guard perhaps) have these kind of missiles (SA-15).  Soviet made.  So who's in charge and what info is being passed up the chain might be a bit hinky.

Anyway, someone saw something and thought they needed to shoot.  If they hit the switch by mistake, I would think they would turn off the guidance radar ASAP to prevent a hit, so I'm guessing they meant to hit it.  Probably shot two missiles, one shortly after the other, to increase probability of kill.  I believe that is doctrine.

Unreal they killed 83 of their own people because no one said hey guys.  Plane is taking off from the capital let's turn off the AA systems from 4 hours ago....

Guess I just didn't want it to be true :(

Screwed up?  They are bumbling idiots.

Im saying how was it possibly captured on video
They were on high alert probably expecting an incoming US missile. Likely lots of people out filming the sky. Or, there are all sorts of folks around the world who pretty just love planes and film them all the time. Who knows.

Simply incredible. But then again not surprising from this country’s military.

You can clearly see the missile hit it on the video.

The integrity of the investigation has been completely compromised with both black boxes in the hands of Iran and their continued denial of this.

The entire world knows what happened. Not sure what effect the lack of a black box will have. Sure they will deny it. But the world knows.

The video wasn't filming the plane.  It was filming the missile that was launched.  You don't even know the plane is there.  You see the trail of the missile and then BOOM.  A huge fireball.  It happened around the same time as the ground losing communications with the plane.

The world may know, but the families will suffer with a long fraudulent process from the country of Iran who is responsible for this tragedy.

Just awful.

One thing that has been talked about for years was "Is Iran's weaponry as sophisticated as claimed?"  They've unveiled pictures of stealth fighters, drones and missiles that other intelligence teams have looked at and raised concerns over the claims.  Lots of times, in a dictatorship, lies get piled on lies so many times that it's hard to know what's the truth until you see first hand.  It's kind of like that scene in the early seasons of Silicon Valley where they are trying to meet the deadline and each team is like "There's no way.  But I'm not going to tell Gavin (the guy in charge.)"  So it just keeps getting pushed from group to group with each team not meeting the deadlines.

I think we might be seeing a glimpse of that here.  Shooting down a commercial airliner is not something that happens when you have good communications.  When you're trying to send a decisive message and you fire off your best ballistic missiles and 25% of them have catastrophe failures,  something isn't right.  I think this shows a huge weakness to Iran's capabilities.  Not that we should underestimate anyone ever, but I'm guessing the US Military is right now going back and looking through a lot of data to see exactly how much of what has been claimed can be proven.

It's one thing to talk big game.  For years, I talked about how great I was at hockey because I lived in a place where hockey wasn't played.  Then I met a friend who actually was awesome at hockey.  And we started playing.  And it was quite embarrassing to know that all of my lies about my greatness where on full display.

the "worst part" - well whatever wording, we know the actual worst part.

This happened 4 freaking hours after their missile show.....

really freaking incredible how awful and disgustingly stupid that this happened

Not following this comment, why is 4 hours important?  If I was Iran I would be looking out for some sort of response in that timeframe.

Sad and tragic.  Even more tragic is the fact that nothing will be done about it.  Senseless to lose all those lives.  And because of someone's ineptness.

I imagine they probably do end up executing the SA-15 operators.  Quietly, but not completely quietly.

So you launched an attack 4 hours ago.   You had this Airplane stand down and delay for over an hour from previous takeoff.

This plane did not take off immediately after.

The 4 hours is plenty of time to say.   "HEY passenger plane is cleared for takeoff OUT OF OUR OWN AIRPORT"  STANDDOWN.  Plus it was already in their airspace.  Its not like it entered their airspace all of a sudden.

So colossal of a #### up

Also imagine what they'll do to the guy (he was a student?) who filmed the missile striking the plane on a smart phone.  Guess he'll disappear too.

You keep saying this and I don't disagree entirely. Look back no further then Iraq for proof of that. However the Saudi strikes were pretty pin point. So their capability has got to be better than displayed the other night.

I would say they missed on purpose and wouldn't be surprised if advanced notice wasn't "leaked" so US personal could stay clear.

Is his identity known?  That would suck if true because you are probably correct.
