Is Aaron Rodgers done in Green Bay? (1 Viewer)

The following is from Yahoo:

With Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers missing the playoffs for the first time since 2008, you’d think the rest of the NFL wouldn’t be looking a gift horse in the mouth.

But nope.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Sunday morning that a few unnamed teams are miffed at the way the Packers returned Rodgers to the IR after he briefly returned from a shoulder injury to play against the Carolina Panthers in Week 15.

Those teams believe the Packers violated NFL rules by again placing Rodgers on the IR after the Packers were eliminated from playoff contention with Atlanta’s win over Tampa Bay on Monday night. Rules state a player must suffer a new injury every time he is placed on the IR.

The consequences aren’t small. If a player doesn’t suffer a new injury that keeps him out six weeks, NFL rules say the player must be released and placed on waivers once healthy.

If that’s the case, the Cleveland Browns’ long wait for a quarterback may finally be over!

And Packers fans may have awoken to the biggest lump of coal imaginable.

Of course, it’s hard to imagine the NFL would allow such a thing to happen on a technicality, especially since teams do the same thing with lesser players without anyone ever raising a stink.

Schefter reported that the NFL referred all inquiries to the Packers, who declined comment.

Bottom line: If Rodgers is on the IR because of the same broken clavicle that put him there the first time, the Packers will have to get creative in inventing a second ailment if the NFL investigates further.

If you're a Green Bay Packers fan, this is the last thing you want to have happen.  If the NFL does investigate this matter any further, they may just give the team a hit in their wallets.  It's too much of a stretch to force them to release Aaron Rodgers in the first place!

If they aren’t going to enforce the rule then the rule should not exist. Absolute Nancy move to refer inquiries to Packers rather than address how they will choose to enforce THEIR rule. They just shouldn’t have allowed Rodgers to have gone on IR and forced him to stay on active roster.

If they release him, they can just resign him to the same contract. The Browns won't get him. As a veteran he doesn't go on waivers and becomes a normal free agent, free to sign to GB.
I agree that is the normal process but is that the case in this scenario? If so, what’s the point (there is no real penalty)? Either way he should be forced to stay on active roster and GB shouldn’t have the extra spot on their 53.

Goodell will prob suspend Rodgers for 4 games and dock GB a first round draft pick to distract people from the real issues with the NFL.

After the trade deadline, even veterans have to go through waivers. The automatic free agency policy does not apply.

But there is no chance Rodgers ends up on waivers. There is no way the league will enforce that.

One of my fantasy teams demands action from the NFL on this also.

In his one game back he knocked me out of the semis

Two things, first the Packers will get creative and find a way around this and it will be a non story by the super bowl, second if this was the Patriots this thread would be 6 pages long by now and people calling for Brady to go to the Browns, and the Patriots banned from the league.

I don't expect anything to come from this but it has to be embarrassing for the GM/coach to allow this to happen. Were they not aware of the rule?

Poor Pats fans...

Why be such a Grinch? Can't we all agree to hate the Patriots on Christmas Day?

eta* Schefter is also likely just mad because he might have had Rodgers on his fantasy team and had to start Keenum in Wk 16.

I like the Pats, and it is so funny the different treatment each team gets.

I don't know the rule, but wouldn't they have to release him effective immediately?
If the NFL issued a diktat, then yes.

They never will.

Can you imagine Rodgers to Gordon/Coleman with Crowell and Johnson in the backfield with a decent line? That would be nuts. Cincinnati might trip over themselves to give people headshots.

Yeah because this is the same as cheating to win a super bowl. You nailed it again.
Cheating to win ( which I am using your claim) a game as opposed what the Cowboys of the 90's did or Jerry trying to keep his running back active to win games. You are right! Sorry for hijacking the thread I won't talk about anything, but Rodgers again.

For the record I think it is a dumb rule and dumb of the Packers to do this. List Rodgers as the emergency qb, someone correct me if I am wrong, but the emergency qb doesn't have to be active for the game right? He only comes in if the first 2 qbs are declared out. Here is the reason the rule is dumb, why should the player have to receive a new injury to go back to IR? If a player comes back at 80% and tries to play and either can't play well or is likely to get himself hurt again then the team should be allowed to place him back on IR. I thought the league was all about player safety?

This is all very silly.

ARod will simply claim he tweaked something in his comeback game.

Green Bay will get a fine.

Maybe.

And the silliness will go away. Owners will be miffed, as they do; the NFL won’t touch this with a 10-foot pole because ARod is the golden boy of the NFL.

Complaning about any of this is utterly fruitless.

Thus, spending energy on it is pointless. I’ve now spent energy I can never get back, even without getting my dander up; merely typing this low key & relatively apathetic response.

So instead I will return to my Khalua & coffee & maybe play a game of Madden so I have something real to get mad about today. Well, real-er. Heh

Happy holidays everyone!   :suds:

The emergency qb rule was removed a while ago, but you correctly describe what it used to be.  The Pack wanted an extra roster spot and "cheated" to get one.  It deserves a penalty.

I can't believe this BS is still being spread as real news, so here's this...

This claim (as reported by ESPN.com) that the Packers should have to release Aaron Rodgers when he’s healthy because they violated injured-reserve rules when they sat him for the rest of the season is a crock. I’d call it a Hail Mary, but a Hail Mary has a much better chance of succeeding. This is just complaining for the sake of complaining. According to the report, IR rules mandate that if a player goes on IR he has to be medically unable to play for at least six weeks, and if he’s healthy before six weeks then the team has to release him when he’s cleared. That might be the letter of the law, but teams at the end of the season routinely put guys on IR whose injuries will make them miss the rest of the season but wouldn’t sideline them for six weeks. As former Packers front-office executive Andrew Brandt tweeted, “Good luck with that. Players with hang nails are put on IR this time of year. The league already has signed off on Rodgers going on IR, so it’s a done deal. I guarantee you every team that called the league office to complain – the ESPN report said only that it was multiple teams – has done something similar in the last few years. This is a big nothing.

Here's something no one has brought up yet: The Packers are the only publicly owned franchise in all of professional sports.  I know this for a fact because my brother-in-law's friend owns stock in the team.

Wonder how much of the fine he'll have to pay once the commish lays down the law...

Just another reason to get rid of McCarthy and Thompson. The sooner, the better for those two to be gone.

I guess McCarthy is showing how long you get for winning a super bowl. 8 years now?
I can't understand anyone calling for the firing of McCarthy or Thompson. Completely illogical. 20+ teams would be lining up for both. This weird Ricky Bobby idea of, if you don't win the Super Bowl, then you failed is crazy. As if just by having Rodgers, the Packers are entitled to Super Bowls. Especially during one of the most dominant runs by any team in history by New England.

McCarthy and Thompson are both in the top-10(easily) at their jobs in the NFL. Are they perfect? No, of course not. Would many like to see Thompson acquire more veteran FA's, or McCarthy to not play overly conservative with the lead? Yes, but there are only so many of these guys to go around, and its almost impossible to have 2 elite ones at the same time, let alone the two best. Grass is greener syndrome is a good way to end up with Hue Jackson, or Gus Bradley.

Bottom line is, Packer fans are spoiled. They have 2 Super Bowl wins over the last 25 years. Only Dallas, Denver, and New England have more. 3 teams out of 32 have had more success. Only Belichick and Tomlin have a higher winning percentage than McCarthy among active coaches.

I have soured on both of them for a long time. They should have been gone awhile ago. Green Bay will be much better when they are both gone.

Are you mad because you could have just kept Madden ‘95 and had basically the same game the last 20 years without buying a new one? $50x20=1k of EA mailing it in with no competition from even the college franchise (which always seemed better anyway) to make them retool it.

If the league looks into this (which it won’t), all GB needs to do is come up with a secondary problem. Bruised ribs. Shoulder inflammation. Arm fatigue. Whatever. Even if it is related to the original injury, they can come up with some other injury. Why this even became newsworthy is odd in its own right.

People are bored and things about the Packers in a negative light always seem to trigger people. Kind of like Brady/NE and their history. People like to hate those who are successful, especially when their team sucks for decades.

Nah - I tend to get it every 2-3 years, and there’s improvement in graphics, console, engine, etc.

i didn’t get it last year, and this year I got it for $30.

i get mad because I’m not as good as I used to be and get pwnd by racist 12 year olds.

Throwing three picks in his first game back broke his heart.  According to league sources, that qualifies as a new injury.

The league approved the transaction in the first place.

Are we STILL talking about this?

This will amount to nothing.

P.S. Can we have a single topic related to rules without butt hurt Pats fans hijacking the thread? News flash.....you got your revenge on the league 100 fold...."let it go"
