Is anyone trusting Ryan Mathews anymore? (1 Viewer)

He is always in the top 15 or so in most people's weekly fantasy rankings, and I always start him, but I am not sure I trust Ryan Mathews anymore. After coming out with nice stats for the first weeks, after his bye, he has provided minimal value.

To show you how far I have fallen, I am really debating throwing Brandon Jacobs or C.J. Spiller into my RB2 slot over him. That just doesn't seem right.

Do you trust him anymore? Is there any reason to believe that he will come back to pre-week 7 form?

Welcome BW. There are a couple of topics on the first page about Mathews. People seem to be more frustrated with him than anyone this side of Darren McFadden. To answer your question, no. How can you trust him?

That said, he'll be on my bench tomorrow, which means 200 total yards and 4 TDs. So go ahead and start him!

http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/Mathews-Accepts-a-Repeating-Challenge-134504143.htmlPretty decent read on Mathews. He either gets tougher as he learns to deal with the grind of the NFL, becomes a superstar Pro Bowl running back or he continues to be a No. 2 fantasy option who's injured too much, San Diego drafts another RB and he goes elsewhere to resurrect his career. It's really 50/50 right now.
Cedric Benson without the domestic violence.
I guess so, but as a Bears fan, Benson never truly got my hopes up the way Mathews has (with my hopes as a fantasy owner). Mathews' superior speed, receiving ability — he already has more receptions this year than Benson has ever had in one season — give him more upside than Benson.

I benched Mathews in favor of Levin Smith. Should of known I couldn't trust Smith either.
It could be worse, you could have played kevin smith. If he can stay healthy (which won't happen anyway) I still think Matthews can be a low end RB2 for the rest of the year. What a huge fall for a guy that everyone thought was a RB1 just 6 weeks ago.

This is all about the line in SD. Sure, he's sat a couple games, but when he's been in he's ranged from good to stud. Even with the line a mess, he's good. I never saw what the explanation was for pulling him against Chicago. I assume it was a combination of the needing Tolbert to block due to the decimated line and having to pass and his two fumbles. But he's too strong a play-maker for Norv to have on the bench if he's healthy enough to play. I think he's due for a big game and I'm probably going to start him over Tolbert tomorrow.

He's my #5 RB now.

I traded Fitzpatrick/McGahee for Mathews/Starks at the end of Sept.

I thought I got the best of that deal, however they all stink now.

Starks was dropped and I'm holding Mathews hoping he revives himself

over the next few weeks to give me another option during the playoffs.

Rolling with Benson myself- already been down that sucker road with Mathews. I'll hold out hope he gets healthy for the next couple weeks.

I may be off here, but doesn't he compare closer to Darren McFadden early on in his career? Both have been dinged/missed games early and always seem to be hurt... Although when they're healthy, they're scary. I'll admit that I'm a borderline Mathews apologist, but I don't think he has issues about being tough on the field. I believe that Norv is just more willing to plug Tolbert in than let Mathews grind it out.I think Mathews failure over the past month or so isn't solely on him, but it's a chain reaction of failure. Rivers is throwing to the wrong guys, and turning the ball over more than he ever has, the line is a mash unit that is constantly getting beat. They're not scoring or executing. No one other than maybe Gates has stepped up over that amount of time. WAR MATHEWSAt least until you fail me this week.

I played Smith because I was so sick of seeing Matthews take himself out of the game, then Smiity goes down in the first quarter. :hot:

I started Ryan Grant over Mathews this week. Still might work out.
Not sure of your situation, but that's just hilarious.Starting Mathews over Tolbert in my league.
oh.... are you? :pics: now THAT would be just hilarious.
Lol, how did that work out for ya? Mathews about to cross the century mark today. Some of you are idiots.
How exactly is it being an idiot by starting another option over a guy who hadn't practiced much this week and was said to be limited today? If you started Mathews today, I'm guessing it is because your options were terrible and you got very lucky. Kudos.

I just said I started him over Tolbert. You started Grant over him which means his news of being limited wasn't even mentioned yet, just that he missed practice. I've been starting him all season through thick and thin (sometimes with Tolbert at flex) because this is what he's capable of. I understand losing some faith, but Ryan Grant over him? I'm guessing you had to make a quick decision on Thursday and it cost you

Luckily Dan Fouts talked to Norv last night and he would know, so Tolbert was the logical play of the two. Who wants a free pass to the second round of the playoffs anyway.

I'm not the op. I actually started Hillis over him and Wells once I heard Hillis was starting and Hardesty was out. :yucky:

RT @daverichard Fouts on Fantasy Football Today: Tolbert to start, Mathews will be limited. He met w/ Norv last night. He would know.

Who wants to junk punch Dan Fouts? Started Blount over Mathews based on this report. Didn't cost me the game, but what crappy intel...
I don't because it forced me to start Beanie instead. Thanks Dan

He's back in

I have Mathews and will start him because he's a talented back that has the potential to have an excellent fantasy game at any time.

The problem with him is Mike Tolbert and how SD uses him to vulture the TDs. Each one of those equals 60 yards worth of fantasy points.

Don't trust him at all but look at what he can do when he's able to get a handful of touches without getting hurt. They were opening holes for him and he was slicing through that defense. I thought he was going to bring a couple more of those carries to paydirt.

I wish SD trusted him more, then maybe I would too.
