Is it time for Sage Rosenfels in Houston? (1 Viewer)

He looked pretty good in relief of Carr (who was just awful) today. He certainly found Owen Daniels often enough!

Should the Texans start Sage next week instead of Carr, and see if he can take them forward? Or are they attached to Carr?

I think it was more of a relief pitcher type of deal. Starter didn't have his best stuff so you have to take him out. I expect Carr to start next week.

Carr is the highest rated QB in the NFL
according to nfl.com carr is rated #4 (still pretty high)...of course, that was before today's disaster. that he was rated as high as #4 suggests that the qb rating system is "incomplete."

I always thought Rosenfels got some raw deals. In 5 years he has been passed over for the following group of players:

Jeff George

Tony Banks

Kent Graham

Danny Wuerffel

Shane Matthews

Ray Lucas

A.J. Feeley

All those guys are out of the league (except Feeley), yet Rosenfels keeps plugging along.

Heading into the game, Carr had a 70.3% completion percentage, over 2:1 TD:INT ratio and 7.1 YPA.

I haven't seen one Houston game and maybe it's all garbage time (I doubt it), but those are generally pretty good numbers.

You have a valid point. His biggest problem IMHO has been that he's had coaching changes at bad times as his stops. He was drafted by Schottenheimer in Washington (to a lot of criticism for reaching for him in the 4th round), stayed on the team through Spurrier's first year before being traded (IIRC) to Wanstedt's Dolphins, who held him for a couple more years until Saban came on board. Now he's in Houston. He's probably another Gus Frerotte, meaning good enough to start and succeed for short periods of time but who will always be playing for teams looking to replace/upgrade him.

Funny you should make that comparison, because I was just looking at Miami's stats over the last few years and I noticed that Frerotte's 2005 stats are quite a bit better than what Culpepper and Harrington have put up in 2006. Just another example of a team looking to "upgrade" a mediocre starter -- and having it backfire.

Mark Brunell has a high rating too. It means nothing if he's not running the offense correctly and the positives are only coming during garbage time.
Fumbles are not accounted for in the rating. He fumbled twice and both time lost the ball. On interception on top of that.I didn't see the game. Was the ball knocked out or did he have butter fingers?

He was hit from his blindside. His INT was a :bag: though

I see this as a negative... If he can't beat those guys out...I don't see them benching Carr just yet. I'd put money down that he'll start next week but I think this may be one of those warning signs for Carr. He's been put on notice by the coaching staff...

I was a little surprised by the benching. Carr was effective and the Texans were moving the ball well, but kept shooting themselves in the foot with the turnovers. The pass that was picked off should never have been thrown, but the fumbles were probably the line's fault moreso than Carr's.So I was wondering if Kubiak was doing this as a statement to Carr that he needs to protect the ball better. From the article in the Houston Chronicle, it sounds like that's the case:

Even though Sage Rosenfels came off the bench to throw three touchdowns in the second half, coach Gary Kubiak said emphatically after the game that Carr is still the starter."He was very (mad) and should have been," Kubiak said. "That's a tough pill to swallow."To be great in this league, you've got to pay a tremendous price. You've got to go through a lot, but I expect him to bounce back next week and have a good game (against the New York Giants)."...Kubiak told Carr that if he didn't protect the ball better he would be benched. On the first series of the third quarter, Carr led the Texans to the Tennessee 26, but he was sacked by defensive end Travis LaBoy and fumbled again.Carr, who was 15-of-21 for 113 yards, was replaced by Rosenfels with 9:51 left in the quarter."I told him that was what I was doing to do, and I'm a man of my word," Kubiak said. "I told him at halftime that we've struggled in the third quarter, and I don't care what happens, we've got to protect the ball. I know he got hit, but the ball came out."It's extremely hard to do that to any player in that situation. We could have protected him better, but, ultimately, he's the guy under center, and he's got to protect the ball."On Rosenfels' first series, Andre Johnson couldn't hang on to a pass, and it bounced into the arms of Jones, who returned the interception to the Texans' 24. Young's 20-yard touchdown pass to Bobby Wade made it 21-3 with 8:13 left in the third quarter.

It's not true that Carr's only positives are coming in garbage time. His passer rating in the 1st half (94.8) is better than his passer rating in the 2nd half (93.6).However, what is true to say is that while he's been fairly consistently good in the 1st half with 97 and 91 passer ratings by quarter, in the 2nd half he's got a 54.6 rating in the 3rd quarter and then a 125.6 in garbage time in the 4th quarter. So he's sucking it up bad in the 3rd.Passer rating obviously doesn't include the problems he's had with fumbling when he's been hit, and that's why Kubiak benched him, to stress that he's got to not turn it over. But my point is that he's been effective throwing the ball over the course of th egame and he doesn't just have good stats because of garbage time. He just needs to improve on not turning it over.

As a Texans fan, I had no trouble with the benching, he was getting the job done. Hopefully this will jump start his butt. If it doesn't mayb we will pursue a QB in the draft or free agency but Sage ain't the answer

I said in the preseason that Kubiak wouldn't be afraid to bench Carr if his play warrants it and it looks like I was right (at least on this prediction.) Kubiak benched Carr to send him a message and hopefully he got it.

"Protect the dang ball. Don't take sacks you don't have to."

Sage is not the long-term answer but he makes a great backup. Don't forget Sage was playing against the Titan's and the Texans were moving the ball all over them yesterday. Turnovers and stupid penalties are what killed the Texans drives, not an inability to execute the offense.

Carr is getting the raw deal. Give me a break, the guy is playing well. If they want to get on someone get on the #1 pick.

 Carr got benched due to the turnovers.......the offense was moving, but as was said already - the turnovers and stupid penalties made him get pulled. Kubiak is probably sending him a message - HOLD ONTO THE BALL or THROW THE DAMN THING AWAY!

True, but...He was drafted by Schottenheimer......who was subsequently fired. Then Spurrier comes in and decides to stock the roster with "his" guys (Wuerffel & Matthews). Then you'd think he'd get a chance to prove himself in Miami, but for some reason they were fixated on guys like Jay Fiedler and Ray Lucas.I don't think he's one of those Trent Green/Rich Gannon types who languishes in obscurity before becoming a star in his 30s, but I do think he could be a productive starter.

All the fumbles Carr has had this season is why he was benched. Then he had 3 or 4 turnovers in the game Sunday. Not sure how many fumbles he has this year but it's way too many! I don't care if there isn't anyone blocking up front. Learn how to hold on to the ball!

Exactly. Granted, that coaching staff was terrible, but if they pass on you for these guys.... well... That "some reason" is probably that Sage just isn't that good. I don't think he's got what it takes to be a decent starter in this league.
