It's sad but the HoF doesn't matter much to me anymore. It's become more about the process and the voters than the players and their feats. I'm sure it'll be a big deal for Blyleven, Alomar and Gillick, and it would be a huge deal for Rose.I can go to the Louvre or the Met and appreciate the art without somebody arbitrarily deciding for me who belongs in the Sculptor Hall of Fame. Cooperstown is on my bucket list but if I make it, I'll go for the history and not because Rabbit Maranville was deemed more worthy than Ron Santo.
And stay off my lawn?

As long as he waits as long as Shoeless Joe Jackson has to, I'm fine with him getting in.

I think this is the most persuasive argument IMO. There was very sketchy evidence against Shoeless Joe and based on his performance in the 1919 WS, even if he did take money he wasn't throwing games. Considering the time, the fact that owners really owned the men then and what they made to play...I don't even blame those guys for taking the money. Pete Rose had money, fame, made a great living off the game adn was gonna make money off the game the rest of his life. Betting on baseball while he was in the game was selfish, was the opposite of honorable and leaves a bad taste in anyone's mouth who ever loved the game. I have no sympathy for him, I hope he dies on the outside of Cooperstown.

3:1 he dies inside that memorabilia store at Caesars.

:lmao: Just saw him in there last May. :lmao:

I think he should be in, but the fact that he isn't is his own fault, not only for betting on baseball, but for his refusal to never really come clean about it over the years. He has no one to blame but himself.

:goodposting: I share the same opinion.

I don't like Pete Rose as a person.

That being said I've always said they should let him in the Hall of Fame - his accomplishments as a player that qualify him for the Hall all occurred before his gambling. Even though I would let him in the Hall, I would ban him from any involvement with MLB functions or teams going forward as punishment for his betting on baseball. So, he gets rewarded for his playing aocomplishments that pre-dated his misconduct by going into the Hall but he still gets punished for violating the prohibitions against betting.

The HOF is not controlled by MLB. They have choosen the rule that banned players are not eligible for induction. Nothing about his ban needs to change for him to be eligible for the HOF the HOF merely would need to change its bylaws.

I'll never forgive him for those Aqua Velva commercials running into Ray Fosse like an ####### in the 1970 All-Star game.
 Fosse was blocking the plate.
It's an ALL STAR game. It's not like it was a game that meant anything.
Then WHY WAS HE BLOCKING THE PLATE?
Better question: Do you run into the catcher when scoring on a hit to the outfield in your co-rec softball league? Same thing.

Catcher was blocking the plate in my softball game a couple weeks ago. I ended up sliding rather than running over him. I was wearing shorts, so I scraped up my knee pretty good. Wish I ran into him instead. Catcher was a ####. I agree with Shuke, so was Fosse.

Does it really matter? Would many people know who shoeless Joe Jackson was if he wasn't in HOF purgatory?

He's the all-time hit leader and he has rings. So what if his plaque isn't on somebody's wall in cow country, NY?

So you're as bad as Pete Rose then?

My instinct was to (and I did in fact) slide, so I guess not as bad. Just in retrospect I think I should have gone Pete Rose on that guy.

Sorry, but if you're the catcher and you block the plate, you have to know that a runner might run you over. Don't want to get run over, don't block the freaking plate.

We need another WIS draft

Industrial forgiveness has no value. Let him in the HOF (He earned that on the field) but ban him from all other funtions of baseball (he chose to sacrifice that with his actions).

Your issue is with the HOF itself then. Its their bylaws that prevent Pete from being on the ballot. And boy, I'd love to see the mental gymnastics the steriod crusaders use to vote for Pete but not vote for Bonds, Clemens, et al.

Eh, keep 'em all out. Dodds says there's too many in the HOF anyway.

I'll never forgive him for those Aqua Velva commercials running into Ray Fosse like an ####### in the 1970 All-Star game for whining about "Garber pitched like it was the ninth inning of the seventh game of the World Series" when his hit streak was ended by striking out on a fat changeup.
The contrast between Mr Selfish's response to striking out and Paul Molitor being left in the on deck circle about a decade later when their respective hit streaks ended. One was all class, and one was :censored: .
