Is Joe Bryant among the Growing Legion of Patriot Haters? (1 Viewer)

The Patriots are the NFL's equivalent of Ken Jennings, without the boyish charm and Richie Cunningham looks.
Boyish charm? I thought that was just his magic underwear.Ken Jennings creeps me out. Looks like he probably lives in a hollow tree, baking cookies at a feverish pace.*I now return you to your regularly scheduled Patriot Hatin'*P.S. Does Belly-chick still wear those leg warmers on the sidelines or is it "hoodies only" now? I really can't stand that dude. Once a Brown, always a Brown. You still have the Cleveland stank on you, Billy. You can never wash it clean.

I guess I'm not so easily amused as you are. Nothing that was said was remotely funny.
I love the Pats and I thought it was hilarious that Joe pointed out the fact that the Patriots would "go for the jugular" with the Redskins only having 10 defensive players on the field!

 Most of these are funny.Living in Raiders country and without DirecTV, I've been catching Pats games at bars amongst Raiders fans for years. The ribbing that goes on in this forum is nothing compared to the ribbing I took in 2002 after the Tuck Rule-aided championship and the apparent one-and-done/fluke Super Bowl 36 Pats. And unlike the hide-behind-your-keyboard bravado that occurs on the internet, this was to my face.

Whining about the haters is undignified. Most of them aren't huge haters, but rather enjoy pulling the sensitive Pats fans' strings. And they've got the OP and others dancing like a marionette.

I think that we all need to take a step back and remember that it's Christmas time, and Christmas time is a time of giving. But we are supposed to be giving wonderful gifts and giving of ourselves. We shouldn't be giving a hard time to other people. Joe Bryant has expressed a particular opinion about the Patriots and perhaps that was somewhat unfair. But instead of making two wrongs and giving Joe a hard time, the better response would have been to remind Joe how lucky he is to be blessed in so many ways. This would have softened his heart and perhaps lead him to reconsider his unfavorable opinion.
:goodposting: GBGD!What makes this world so great is that people have different opinions and that makes life fun and interesting. Wow, what a great time to be alive!
Totally agree. We're all so fortunate.

I usually enjoy Random Shots. But after reading yesterday, couldn't help but feel annoyed by yet ANOTHER member in the growing nation of Patriot haters and had to voice my opinion. It's bad enough the Monday Night Football broadcast was dedicated to rooting against the Patriots (wheeling Mercury Morris out of the asylum and Don Shula out of the home for the evening, voodoo dolls in hand), but now Footballguys own Joe Bryant seems to have joined in the hystrical masses, pitchfork and burning torch in hand, to decry my team. It seems that there is no intellect applied anymore when criticizing the Patriots, it's all emotional.

It started out somewhere in Week 3 when he asserted that the Patriots would not go undefeated (still feeling confident about that prediction Joe?) and has snowballed slowly into this week's acerbic not so random shots at the Pats. Here are some highlights:

Few games live up to expectations but the Washington - Buffalo game was as dramatic as everyone thought it would be following the death of Redskins safety Sean Taylor.

In one of the cooler things I've seen on a football field in a while, Washington opened the game on defense with just 10 players for the first play as a way to pay tribute to Taylor. Pretty moving.

I'm just glad they weren't playing New England as the fake kneel down - throw long to Randy Moss play probably wouldn't have gone over well there.

Okay, first of all, and this is a bit of a non-sequitur, but in my opinion, starting the game out with 10 guys on the field was incredibly stupid. These are professionals being paid tons of money in a sport in which each game and each play has signficance. But that's neither here nor there, was it really necessary to take a shot at the Patriots here? I get it, they are heartless, soulless heathens who would dance on the grave of their fellow man. Got it.

Here's another one:

New England only failed to cover by 16 points this week. That's better than last week...

So what's your point here Joe? What are you saying? Is this humor? Is this insightful in some way? No. Is it Patriot hating? Yes.

But wait...there's more!

The reality is that New England was busted for cheating this year. They were hit with unprecedented fines in addition to losing a first round draft selection next year. It was a very serious punishment for a very serious offense. Acknowledged cheating threatens the very thing the league holds most dear - the integrity of the game...

First of all, just wanted to say :goodposting: But, it's highly debatable how serious an offense this was or how much it actually benefitted the Patriots when A) every team changes their defensive hand signals every week to prevent "espionage." and b) Every team in the league is bending the rules to gain an advantage.

Sure, Goodell had to appease the other team owners in the wake of this highly publicized violation and hit the Patriots with a meaningless fine and take away one of two first round draft picks, but in reality, the penalty really doesn't hurt the franchise.

It just brings me back to the point that this board has become infested with such irrational Patriot hating that I can't even read these opinions any more, and now, Footballguy #1 is contributing to the cacophony. It is a shame that human reaction to the success of others is usually envy/anger. And I'm tired of seeing it.

I'm from Boston and have had plenty of opportunities to be around the organization at corporate and charitable events and games. The Patriots are an organization that does things the right way. From the executive level management, to the players, to the administrative staff at Gillette. They are incredible contributors to the community, genuinely down to Earth and humble people that are extremely good to the fans. Moreover, they are a football team that stresses an unparalleled commitment to winning, personal sacrifice and teamwork.

If you can't at least appreciate the Patriots, you're just confused. In consideration of the above, after five years, I have unsubscribed from Random Shots and will not renew my membership to Footballguys.
Boston sucks.

Add another one. From a ESPN Page 2 article:

No. 16: On the shuttle to the stadium Sunday night, a bunch of Steelers fans ditched one of their buddies at the hotel because he had brought his wife with him to the game. Steelers fans seem like the funny, self-deprecating type of drunk whereas Patriots fans strike me as the dude who is your all-time best bud at beer No. 4 and is threatening to gut you with a letter opener at brewski No. 8.

3 quick things:1) It is called Random Shots...didn't you realize Joe might take a few "shots" at people/teams around the NFL? By the way, they are also "random". You'd never make it as a Lion's fan.

2) Actually, I think Joe is officially Member #2...Dodds is still holding down Member #1 status

3) If you're going to complain about the article, at least read the intro that is written every week with the article. Listed here for those who aren't members:

Hi Folks,

We do a lot of really insightful, thoughtful and serious features here at Footballguys with some very smart people thinking deeply for you. This is not one of those features.

This is a few pages of me downloading my goofy and dysfunctional mental hard drive that gets stuffed with way too many random items from 40 hours of watching and re-watching (God Bless TiVO) football every weekend. It's the only way I keep relatively sane. Here's hoping it has a tiny bit of value for you. Let's go.

Man, I hate seeing threads like this by fellow Pats fans. Suck it up and move on. Boston sports are tearing it up so enjoy it and ignore the INEVITABLE haters that show up anytime one team or city is doing as well as Boston is doing.

As for Joe specifically, his anti-Patriots bias has been clear to me since day 1, but he still runs the best site out there.

Firstly:

lobsta >>>>>> chowda (and I  chowda)

Secondly:

I can't understand the persecution complex SOME Pats fans have. Yeah they cheated and people are going to harp on that forever - so what? Your team is doing great - enjoy it and stop worrying about what everyone else is saying.

Finally:

For this week and this week only: Gr00vus == :towelwave:

Meh

I'm as big of a Pats fan as any on here and I think it's funny. You've gotta learn to laugh at yourself once in a while..

I also think threads like this contribute to the whiny tool reputation.

As far as the noise on the forums from the tools yelling about Cheaing, asterisks, and rooting for the pats to lose.... just ignore those guys. It's like going into an opposing team's stadium and getting booed... those boos are like cheers. If you weren't getting hazed that means you're not worth hazing.

Relish the hate... soak it in... enjoy it.... it's a sign that your team is king of the hill.

It's a storyline. Get over it.
It started out somewhere in Week 3 when he asserted that the Patriots would not go undefeated (still feeling confident about that prediction Joe?) and has snowballed slowly into this week's acerbic not so random shots at the Pats. Here are some highlights:
The Pats are 12-0 and so they have a much better probability of going undefeated today than they did in week 3, but there are still games to be played. Just a few years ago, the Colts started 13-0... and they obviously did not finish the year undefeated. There's a reason this is one of the most heralded records - it's an incredibly difficult thing to never lose in the NFL, and I think the last 2 weeks are clear evidence that the Pats can be beaten (by the Eagles and Ravens no less, both down their starting QB). If they win it all, it's historic - but it's still far from a sure thing at this point.
New England only failed to cover by 16 points this week. That's better than last week...

So what's your point here Joe? What are you saying? Is this humor? Is this insightful in some way? No. Is it Patriot hating? Yes.

But wait...there's more!
Random Shots is not necessarily meant to be insightful, as Joe makes very clear. But how exactly is this Patriot hating? If anything, it's more a commentary on some of the ridiculous lines being set... you don't often see a team giving *30* points.
First of all, just wanted to say  But, it's highly debatable how serious an offense this was or how much it actually benefitted the Patriots when A) every team changes their defensive hand signals every week to prevent "espionage." and b) Every team in the league is bending the rules to gain an advantage.

Sure, Goodell had to appease the other team owners in the wake of this highly publicized violation and hit the Patriots with a meaningless fine and take away one of two first round draft picks, but in reality, the penalty really doesn't hurt the franchise.
I love the rationalization here. I think most would agree that there was a marginal benefit, and we can be pretty certain that it did not contribute to their win streak this year (except maybe as a positive motivational tool for Bill and the Pats). But please stop pretending that it did not happen and otherwise rationalizing it away. (Or my favorite, that it's no different than a false start penalty because both are just violation of rules and clearly cheating). The simple fact is that the league, with all of the facts, decided it was worthy of a severe penalty (and loss of a first round pick is certainly a severe penalty regardless of how much you think the franchise will suffer). The Patriot apologists bother me at least as much as Patriot haters. (I'm a Jets fan, so I'm a long-time Patriot hater, but it's not right for the hate outside of our division who don't k now or care about the Pats... we have to deal with them twice a year and it's our duty to hate!)

:headbang: If you're over sensitive to something you can be SURE that people are going to harp on this more. If the Apologists just ignored this, people would shut up.The same thing goes on during games... I played college football and there were always guys that liked talk ####. If you react, you're acknowledging it that you're sensitive to it and they'll never shut up. Let actions speak louder

And there's nothing worse then watching that great football in a bar with some toolbox wearing a brand new Randy Moss jersey, drinking Sam Adams, eating a crab cake, and talking about how awesome the team is and that everyone hates them because their so good, never realizing that the problem is him and his buddies who won't shut up about it.
People in Boston don't really eat crab cakes.
Really? Interesting.
Yeah, not really. Not really ever.
but crabcakes are good....
I thought that crab cakes was more of a Baltimore thing. Isn't it clam chowder or something equally gross in Boston?

Dear joelib77,

Look I can understand being passionate about a team. I can. I can understand getting upset at the negativity aimed squarely at "your" team. I can. But what I don't understand is the rationale that everyone needs to be on your side (the pats fans). Us non-pats fans..the "haters" have the right to aim said anger or resentment towards new england and you know what - we don't even have to justify it. We just don't. And I'm just speaking of the dudes on the boards. It has already been pointed out that the second you post something like this you immediately put a target on your back - kinda like the pats. So hey, maybe that's the good you can take out of this situation - you are sorta like the pats - you have a target on your back. There, that should make you feel better.

People definitely eat more chowder here than in other places, but that's because it's better here. We also have better roast beef sandwiches than anywhere else in the country. As a side note, my favorite weird regional thing (to talk about, not to eat) is Pittsburgh, where Primanti brothers will put french fries onto their already unhealthy sandwiches. They also have a place that puts cheese and french fries onto their salads. I haven't seen either anywhere else in the country.

This can't be good.

This is just a whiny fishing expedition...

Joe's work is superb....and over the years have never thought for once he was hating on someone... at most you can tell a team and/or player he's fond of besid..

Wait... LAST I checked......and I'm surprised... if I was a moderator, I'd move this to free-for-all or elsewhere.

Shark Pool : "The Shark Pool is reserved for sharing NFL talk and fantasy football strategy discussion. "

I don't really pay attention to what others think about my team (the Pats), all that matters to me is what they do on the field on Sunday. They've screwed up but so has every team and for that matter every person involved with the NFL at one point in their life. Its a shame everyone has to bicker with each other - it would be nice if people could just enjoy the team, because they ARE fun to watch.

We didn't have this message board during the previous dynasties, like the Cowboys, 49ers, Steelers, etc., but it's hard to believe that so many of the fans would be so whiny. Maybe it's a Boston thing?

What would be nice is if the team wasn't so smug and classless. What would be nice is if the team wasn't shoved down our throats. What would be nice is if the team was the Packers (the anti-pats). That said, I'll leave the Packers out of this until they snipe the patsies in the big game.

Really fred?I did not know this. Is this a bostonfred only opinion or do other New Englanders share your thought on this? Why are the roast beef sandwiches so good there?J
I´m not sure I can give an answer to the why, but I´m in full agreement that the Boston area has some of the best ( Kelly´s RB in Reveahhhh ) Roast beef sandwiches ever. In just about any town, you can find a fill-in-the-blank´s Roast Beef, which will have a regular and Super beef sandwich, and a huge collection of fried crap, fries, chicken wings, fingers, onion rings, etc.The beef is always super rare and fresh sliced off a huge roast. I haven´t found one like this anywhere else.

I think this may be a North East thing. I can't speak for Boston, but New York (bascially, deli's - REAL deli's not what the country "calls" a deli) has always had SUCH better meats, including roast beef, for sammiches than just about anywhere I can think of (actually, anywhere I can think of). Down in Md it's not the same. Out in california, it's not even close - SD, LA, San Fran. I never understood - I mean, even just boars head meats around here make other region's meats pale in comparison.

Hi Folks, We do a lot of really insightful, thoughtful and serious features here at Footballguys with some very smart people thinking deeply for you. Let's go.
If you don't like what's in Joe B's personal sand-box of an article, don't read it. There's thousands of other pages to choose from.-QG

L.A. isn't the best place for a good roast beef sammich. Or Pizza. Or.... well, lots of food.....
:thumbup:There's good food of all varieties here, you just have to know where to go.
Mexican food pretty much everywhere back East sucks. Chinese pales as well too.But to be honest as a native San Franciscan... bread, sourdough bread doesn't seem any different here, than anywhere else. Me thinks a lot of times, ppl are just used to their style combined with homerism.Oh... and most sushi not on the west Coast is average at best.

I'd like to know what part of Joe's comments can be disputed? Yes, there is some speculation in there, but I tend to think it's all based in fact. Example 1 - The Patriots have kept their foot on the gas against every team for the entire game. One of the most visible Pats fans in the media, Bill Simmons, acknowledges this gleefully, saying it's the trademark of the team to want to beat people til the final whistle. BB WOULD HAVE thrown deep on that play if the previous 13 games are any indication. Care to dispute that?Example 2 - Statement of fact.Example 3 - Statement of fact.
that's it, you are on the list guy1) Eric Mangini2) every member of the 72 dolphins3) all jets and dolphins fans4) everyone involved in monday night football6) The Ravens7) Joe Bryant8) Bossman9) Colin dowling
I think if you ask around on these boards, especially for the people that were here after the Pats beat Carolina, you'll find that I'm one of NE's biggest supporters here. :boxing:
:kicksrock: I say nice things about their passing offense every week in the matchups. Of course, I have to because Tom Brady has been super-duper-awesome this year...So if anything, I should be on the list of  ers.

So what's your point here Joe? What are you saying? Is this humor? Is this insightful in some way? No. Is it Patriot hating? Yes.
you have got to be ####ING kidding me

With regard to the roast beef...it only seems better because the area has roast beef places that are open late night and everyone in there is so cocked they'd eat a pair of sneakers if it was in a roll and had chesse on it.

First of all, just wanted to say :2cents: But, it's highly debatable how serious an offense this was or how much it actually benefitted the Patriots when A) every team changes their defensive hand signals every week to prevent "espionage." and b) Every team in the league is bending the rules to gain an advantage.

In consideration of the above, after five years, I have unsubscribed from Random Shots and will not renew my membership to Footballguys.
excellent post and completely on target.I'd respect joe a little more if he was at least honest about it, like some others.

hey, what classy operation do you root for, anyway, joe -- baltimore?

There's a palpably weird insecurity/persecution complex vibe in some Patriot fan posts.

Some = a lot.
Honestly, I just think that sports may be a bigger part of the New England culture than it is in the rest of the country. I think New England sports fans are among the most devoted I've ever seen, and they seem to take the losses harder than anything.
They were pretty devoted to the Patriots in the early 90s, weren't they?
:2cents: I was at Super Bowl XXXI in 1997 when the Packers beat the Patriots. The Packer fans outnumbered Patriot fans by 10-1. Whenever a Patriot fan started to spout off all I needed to say was "So how long you been a Patriot fan.....3 weeks?" and that shut them up very quickly.

What would be nice is if the team wasn't so smug and classless. What would be nice is if the team wasn't shoved down our throats. What would be nice is if the team was the Packers (the anti-pats). That said, I'll leave the Packers out of this until they snipe the patsies in the big game.
yeah, if only we could hear more about brett favre.

When was the last time New England played Green Bay anyway? We both know. This living in the past stuff is kinda fun.

I agree with the Mexican food comment. I spent a week in Boston once taking a computer class, and I got tired of seafood, so I set out to find a Mexican restaurant. I must have found the worst one on the eastern seaboard. Other than that, I really liked my dining experiences in Boston. The best Chinease food I ever had was a dump in Louisville, Ky called Spring Deer. They were so cheap they used space heaters to heat the place, but the foot was out of this world. The best Mexican food I've ever had was a place called El Pinto in Albuquerque, NM. I lived there for a year, and I must say that I prefer "NewMex" over "TexMex" any day of the week.

Too bad you didnt ask I'm sure someone would have sent you to The Border Cafe in Harvard Square. Great food and better margaritas.Great Chow in Quincy is the best Chinese food.Kelly's Roast Beef in Revere and Riley's Roast Beef in Alston are the two best late night places for food. The only better place is Haven Bros in Providence from my college days.

By the way, I love how the OP *COMPLETELY* took the "cheating" quote out of context, and omitted the key preceding paragraph. What Joe REALLY said was:

For the people talking about the Ravens - Patriots game and how there is some sort of conspiracy where the league wants New England to win: Stop it. Sure, there were some eyebrow raising calls. But that happens. The reality is that New England was busted for cheating this year. They were hit with unprecedented fines in addition to losing a first round draft selection next year. It was a very serious punishment for a very serious offense. Acknowledged cheating threatens the very thing the league holds most dear - the integrity of the game. If there's a team in the league that the NFL would rather not win it all, it's New England.
That is not "hating" :coffee:
