L.A. isn't the best place for a good roast beef sammich. Or Pizza. Or.... well, lots of food.....

There's good food of all varieties here, you just have to know where to go.

Mexican food pretty much everywhere back East sucks. Chinese pales as well too.But to be honest as a native San Franciscan... bread, sourdough bread doesn't seem any different here, than anywhere else. Me thinks a lot of times, ppl are just used to their style combined with homerism.Oh... and most sushi not on the west Coast is average at best.

I agree with the Mexican food comment. I spent a week in Boston once taking a computer class, and I got tired of seafood, so I set out to find a Mexican restaurant. I must have found the worst one on the eastern seaboard. Other than that, I really liked my dining experiences in Boston. The best Chinease food I ever had was a dump in Louisville, Ky called Spring Deer. They were so cheap they used space heaters to heat the place, but the foot was out of this world.The best Mexican food I've ever had was a place called El Pinto in Albuquerque, NM. I lived there for a year, and I must say that I prefer "NewMex" over "TexMex" any day of the week.

Too bad you didnt ask I'm sure someone would have sent you to The Border Cafe in Harvard Square. Great food and better margaritas.Great Chow in Quincy is the best Chinese food.Kelly's Roast Beef in Revere and Riley's Roast Beef in Alston are the two best late night places for food. Yes there's lots of good food here - I was just kidding around.... joking ,as it were.... in fact one of the best slices of pizza I ever had is down in Redondo Beach (from displaced Brooklynites...).And the Mexican food here is of course, great.Still want a good Roast Beef sammich tho, so fellow LA folks can hook me up ifn they want.Cause a good deli not in a grocery store has been tough to find....Humor around here is becoming a scarce commodity.......

I usually enjoy Random Shots. But after reading yesterday, couldn't help but feel annoyed by yet ANOTHER member in the growing nation of Patriot haters and had to voice my opinion. It's bad enough the Monday Night Football broadcast was dedicated to rooting against the Patriots (wheeling Mercury Morris out of the asylum and Don Shula out of the home for the evening, voodoo dolls in hand), but now Footballguys own Joe Bryant seems to have joined in the hystrical masses, pitchfork and burning torch in hand, to decry my team. It seems that there is no intellect applied anymore when criticizing the Patriots, it's all emotional.

It started out somewhere in Week 3 when he asserted that the Patriots would not go undefeated (still feeling confident about that prediction Joe?) and has snowballed slowly into this week's acerbic not so random shots at the Pats. Here are some highlights:

Few games live up to expectations but the Washington - Buffalo game was as dramatic as everyone thought it would be following the death of Redskins safety Sean Taylor.

In one of the cooler things I've seen on a football field in a while, Washington opened the game on defense with just 10 players for the first play as a way to pay tribute to Taylor. Pretty moving.

I'm just glad they weren't playing New England as the fake kneel down - throw long to Randy Moss play probably wouldn't have gone over well there.

Okay, first of all, and this is a bit of a non-sequitur, but in my opinion, starting the game out with 10 guys on the field was incredibly stupid. These are professionals being paid tons of money in a sport in which each game and each play has signficance. But that's neither here nor there, was it really necessary to take a shot at the Patriots here? I get it, they are heartless, soulless heathens who would dance on the grave of their fellow man. Got it.

Here's another one:

New England only failed to cover by 16 points this week. That's better than last week...

So what's your point here Joe? What are you saying? Is this humor? Is this insightful in some way? No. Is it Patriot hating? Yes.

But wait...there's more!

The reality is that New England was busted for cheating this year. They were hit with unprecedented fines in addition to losing a first round draft selection next year. It was a very serious punishment for a very serious offense. Acknowledged cheating threatens the very thing the league holds most dear - the integrity of the game...

First of all, just wanted to say But, it's highly debatable how serious an offense this was or how much it actually benefitted the Patriots when A) every team changes their defensive hand signals every week to prevent "espionage." and b) Every team in the league is bending the rules to gain an advantage.

Sure, Goodell had to appease the other team owners in the wake of this highly publicized violation and hit the Patriots with a meaningless fine and take away one of two first round draft picks, but in reality, the penalty really doesn't hurt the franchise.

It just brings me back to the point that this board has become infested with such irrational Patriot hating that I can't even read these opinions any more, and now, Footballguy #1 is contributing to the cacophony. It is a shame that human reaction to the success of others is usually envy/anger. And I'm tired of seeing it.

I'm from Boston and have had plenty of opportunities to be around the organization at corporate and charitable events and games. The Patriots are an organization that does things the right way. From the executive level management, to the players, to the administrative staff at Gillette. They are incredible contributors to the community, genuinely down to Earth and humble people that are extremely good to the fans. Moreover, they are a football team that stresses an unparalleled commitment to winning, personal sacrifice and teamwork.

If you can't at least appreciate the Patriots, you're just confused. In consideration of the above, after five years, I have unsubscribed from Random Shots and will not renew my membership to Footballguys.

Seriously. Reminds me of a place in Memphis called Ernestine and Hazel's. Great dive bar with this burger called a Soul Burger. Tastes fantastic at 3:30 in the morning. I once stopped in there sober and had one.... A pair of sneakers would be an improvement.

Food is no joking matter. You want roast beef in L.A. - go to Felipe's:

I´m not sure I can give an answer to the why, but I´m in full agreement that the Boston area has some of the best ( Kelly´s RB in Reveahhhh ) Roast beef sandwiches ever. In just about any town, you can find a fill-in-the-blank´s Roast Beef, which will have a regular and Super beef sandwich, and a huge collection of fried crap, fries, chicken wings, fingers, onion rings, etc.The beef is always super rare and fresh sliced off a huge roast. I haven´t found one like this anywhere else.

I think this may be a North East thing. I can't speak for Boston, but New York (bascially, deli's - REAL deli's not what the country "calls" a deli) has always had SUCH better meats, including roast beef, for sammiches than just about anywhere I can think of (actually, anywhere I can think of). Down in Md it's not the same. Out in california, it's not even close - SD, LA, San Fran. I never understood - I mean, even just boars head meats around here make other region's meats pale in comparison.

With all due respect, I've eaten at plenty of New York delis, and it's not even close. I'm not talking about deli meats, even if they carve it off of a cold slab of roast beef in front of you. Precooked meat just isn't as good as freshly cooked meat. We can disagree on whether a warm sandwich is generally better than a cold one, or whether Kelly's rolls are better than the ones at your favorite deli, or whether a good barbecue sauce or mustard or a slice of cheese belong on a sandwich, let alone vegetables. Those are all a matter of taste. But the big difference here is that the top roast beef places around here are cooking roast beef, then cutting off a slice of rare meat and putting it right onto your sandwich. Warm rare meat is better because it's softer - cold tightens up the muscle in beef, and makes it tougher. And that's before we start talking about the fact that you still have to breathe the smell of buses and taxis on your way in and worry about the cockroaches in the back whenever you eat in NYC.

I genuinely feel badly for people who can't just enjoy good times when they come. If you're waiting for the season where all NFL fans hold hands and pay tribute to the sheer awesomeness that is the New England Patriots, and nobody ever bashes them or criticizes them...you'd best not hold your breath. Behind the glossy cover of a storybook you'll find uncomfortable truths. Maybe the team got busted for bending the rules. Maybe some of the great players on the team don't care about anything but a payday. Maybe your favorite guy is about to be cut in the offseason to save some money. Football is a business and you are a customer. That's pretty much it. So if you're really getting your money's worth this year...enjoy it. It's not that slight and it's not that simple. That Patriots bashing is well beyond that point of reason and has become a major detraction of this board. The discussion of Sean Taylor and his team's effort to memorialize him is a serious issue. With all due respect, I've eaten at plenty of New York delis, and it's not even close. I'm not talking about deli meats, even if they carve it off of a cold slab of roast beef in front of you. Precooked meat just isn't as good as freshly cooked meat. We can disagree on whether a warm sandwich is generally better than a cold one, or whether Kelly's rolls are better than the ones at your favorite deli, or whether a good barbecue sauce or mustard or a slice of cheese belong on a sandwich, let alone vegetables. Those are all a matter of taste. But the big difference here is that the top roast beef places around here are cooking roast beef, then cutting off a slice of rare meat and putting it right onto your sandwich. Warm rare meat is better because it's softer - cold tightens up the muscle in beef, and makes it tougher. And that's before we start talking about the fact that you still have to breathe the smell of buses and taxis on your way in and worry about the cockroaches in the back whenever you eat in NYC.

I dont know if I want a rematch from 1997. Those Packers fans travel well. I do recall that as Pats fans we were outnumbered quite a bit in New Orleans that year.
