Is LaDainian Tomlinson washed up? (2 Viewers)

I got a very bad feeling about this weekend. Baltimore D plus Charger O line = :tfp: Baltimore rushing + play action passes =
Not to mention a healthy Todd Heap. But on the other side they barley beat a really bad KC team at home with Brody Croyle starting at QB, so Im not so sure that D is the same. Whats the status of Vasquez? is Hardwick done?

Take it to the official Charger thread. Leave this one to the LaDainian chicken littles.

17 for 38 against BAL? Could be worse ... How about 14 for 41 against BUF14 for 24 against ATL15 for 39 against KCCOoohhhh ... You're wondering what those numbers are. That's 3 of LTs games last year. I drafted him last year hoping that he was not washed up ... but he was.Now he is a year older and injured ... how much better do you think it's going to get?
Those are bad, but clearly nowhere near as bad as that 17 carries for 7 yards stinkbomb he put up against the Eagles in 2005. Real sharks knew he was washed up back then and have been avoiding him ever since, because he clearly didn't have it anymore. I mean, sure, they missed out on his 31 TD season, but the writing was on the wall, and they'll be the ones with the last laugh.Speaking of the writing being on the wall... anyone remember Adrian Peterson's 21 carries for 32 yards against the PATHETIC New Orleans Saints last year? He's washed up, too. Avoid at all costs.
ironically to my madden analogies, in all the years I have restored the roar (lions franchise) I often end up signing Michael Bennett, as he was the fastest free agent/option available (depending on the year)
Which again just proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that you shouldn't be making real-life NFL judgments based on what works in Madden. Just because really, really fast guys with no vision, patience, or creativity are great players in Madden doesn't mean they are in the NFL, any more than really tall really fast WRs with terrible hands and no route-running skills are great players in the NFL (see: Jones, Matt).

What in the world are you talking about when you say LT was drafted late (like Sproles) due to his size?

LT was drafted 5th overall.
You are right. It was brees selected in the second with the pick they got from trading down from 1 with the falcons (vick draft)IIRC (which I obviously don't) it was actually a bit of a shock that they took LT as high as they did, as his size and school (tulane) created some doubts if he would go that high. But IIRC the chargers took him, thinking they could (and did) get Brees in the second.
 Drafted late?.... out of Tulane?

Dooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooode!

I'm not trying to be reductive of what the guy's accomplished; I'm only trying to throw a lifeline to anyone holding out hope that he's anymore than an RB2 at this stage. There's no doubt in my mind that he'll madden(no pun intended) his owners with an occasional great game, but will they still be eligible for the playoffs by then? Wait for him to get healthy(ahem) and play him in matchups. All you can do if you haven't moved him already. Believe me I know; what makes the situation so difficult is wrapping your head around the idea of benching him if he's active, but he will kill you with in-game shenanigans. Especially since he got labeled a #### for sitting out that playoff game.

Doesn't it seem pretty much impossible for LT to return to his prime, though? When was the last time a long-time elite back started getting hurt and started losing a step ... and then reversed it all and re-achieved elite status? I can't recall it ever having been done.
it happens all the timeafter 7 years in the league, walter paytons yp dipped to 3.5 and the next year he only played 9 games. he then had a resurgence for the next 5 yrs.

im not gonna bother looking for more.
Payton played in 9 games because there was a strike that year, not because of any injury. He also experienced a resurgence due in part to the drafting of Jimbo Covert in '83 and the maturation of Pro Bowl linemen like Keith Van Horne and Jay Hilgenberg. For me, I don't think LT is done. He looked serviceable on Monday night when he was in, but he certainly didn't look electric. That's not a surprise given his age and mileage. The concern is that he isn't as electric as he once was while at the same time running behind an offensive line that is inferior to what he once had, due in part to injury. That's an ugly combination. If his line was performing close to the level at which they did a few years ago, then LT would be good enough. But when the Chargers are having to sign guys who were cut to play o-line in front of a 30 year-old back who has more than 2600 career rushing attempts, that's not a recipe for success.

I didn't say i played him. Just signed him to the bench in case my star went down (as he was a good plug-in, based almost entirley on speed. It's just easier running outside, or inside really, if you have a quicker path to the whole.)LOL, and you and I obviously disagree on Matt Jones....

Are you comparing 1 bad game by LT and AP in their prime to 3 bad games by LT in decline?

What do you think is a realistic expectation for LT the rest of this season qimqam?
I think he is going to be dealing with injuries for most of the season and when he is not he will be very average. In the end ... if healthy enough he will average about 3.6 have 800-900 rushing yds 8 tds and 100-200 Receiving 0-1 tds
So you think his high end production is 1100 yards and 9 TDs.And how is that different from what you perceived expectations were before the season started?
It's not different

No, I'm demonstrating that 3 bad games (while dealing with a major injury) doesn't necessarily mean Tomlinson is in decline.Actually, I'll take that back. I readily admit that Tomlinson is in decline. Of course, Tomlinson is so great that he could be in decline and still be one of the three best RBs in the league. I don't know if he *IS* still one of the three best RBs in the league, because I didn't see enough on Monday... but there's a massive difference between "in decline" and "done". If someone wants to say that Tomlinson isn't at 2006 form, I have no problem with that. If someone wants to say that Tomlinson is barely an NFL-caliber RB and his top 12 fantasy finishes are clearly a thing of the past, then I have a problem with that. It's far too early to be writing his eulogy.

So you think he is underachieving, and will continue to, even your modest expectations?I am just trying to understand your point of view here.

I don't think he is underachieving. I think between Age, Injuries and Sproles his upside is 1100 yards and 9 TDs. The downside is the trend of injuries continues and he becomes completely useless.

Too much upside to keep this hopeful buyer away. I will offer a serviceable rb for LT and upgrade at WR and hope for the best. If it doesn't wok out, I lose the WR upgrade I gave as the RB I am offering is a reserve. If LT goes for 1000/9 and 50 rec/400 that will make the deal worth it.

More like a destitute man's Brees-Rivers. It's hard to argue that the Chiefs are underrating Croyle when his career BEST YPA was 5.5, and he came into this season with 6 TDs to 8 INTs.

Francessa also said about a thousand times on Friday, if the Cowboys can't beat the Giants now they never will.

Odd statement considering Dallas has won 4 of the last 6 meetings. No way would he say that if Parcells were still the coach.

:hijack:All the buzz out of chiefs camp was That Cassell looked bad, and that Croyle had just about played himself into the spot before Cassel hurt himself.

Man, first they sign Cassell to that big contract, then miss out on a three way trade with CHI and Den, could of got some draft picks for him. Someone needs to get fired in KC.By the way someone just dropped Cassell in one of my leagues, was wondering why.

That's the anti-Brees/Rivers, then. If the Chargers would rather roll with Rivers instead of Brees, that's a huge compliment to Philip Rivers. If the Chiefs would rather roll with Croyle instead of Cassell, that's a huge insult to Matt Cassell.Whatever happened to Thigpen? He actually looked halfway decent last year, while Croyle has always looked terrible.

So what's the status of their o-line?

When are their starters expected to be back?
Tremblay said earlier this week that their prognosis was similar to Tomlinson's- questionable for week 2, likely back by week 3. Since then, SD has released the official injury report (Hardwick = out, Vasquez = questionable). Neither player participated in any practices this week, which doesn't bode well for their chances of playing this Sunday, but the fact that Vasquez is questionable instead of doubtful makes a return by week 3 sound very plausible. Last I heard on Hardwick was that he'd miss at least one game, so there's still a chance he's back by week 3, too.

I think it's about time we edit the title of this thread. It is at least half about sproles, and going forward maybe more. Nice game for the lil guy. Too bad no one thought of blocking Ray Lewis there on 4th and 2.

they need a healthy LT. I think they were inside the 5 yard line 3 times and had to kick filed goals. They need LT to get the tough yards

I think the decimated OL has a lot to do with that.
I tend to think you are correct, but it has to be noted that Sproles is 19-49-1 running the ball this year.

That's speculation. What isn't speculation is the fact that Sproles averaged 2.6 yards per carry, or the fact that San Diego got inside the Baltimore 10 yard line four times and walked away with FGs all four times, or the fact that Tomlinson has a reputation for being one of the best red zone weapons in the history of the NFL, or that SD had a 1st and goal from the 2 and gave the ball to Sproles on consecutive plays, and he lost a yard on each play.LT and Sproles are different RBs. The talk of Sproles "replacing" LT is off base, imo. Sproles is a great wildcard, a home run threat on every touch, and a dangerous weapon in space... but Tomlinson is still a better runner.

Woof....

Chargers coach Norv Turner had no new update on LaDainian Tomlinson (ankle) Monday. Turner is holding out hope that LT2 can go, but said he'll prepare to play the Dolphins without him. Same goes for C Nick Hardwick (ankle). Beat writer Kevin Acee vaguely suggested that the Chargers may hold Tomlinson out through their Week 5 bye. Darren Sproles is sounding like a good start again this week.

<rotoworld>

I don't see anywhere where Tomlinson may be out through week 5...anybody else got anything?

Norv's said they won't know/say anything about Tomlinson until tomorrow after practice. Wait and see. I wouldn't put stock in rotoworld's blurbs.

Sproles has replaced LT in the halfback position, so dont know how that is off base. Asking that he replace LT "just as he was in his prime," of course, is not going to wash. One player is a nifty scat back with great ability to hit the edge while LT is a hall of fame RB with complete goal line abilities. But, that doesn't matter now as Sproles is the one playing and has replaced him. Sproles was the value play in drafts at RB ***BUT*** VJAX and Gates are the ones who benefit the most at goal line. If LT gets healthy again, start again at the beginning.

I traded LT for Steven Jackson in my keeper league.
Based on this thread this will probably be considered absurd but I traded for LT this week.I gave Addai and Caddy for LT and Rivers (I needed QB help) in redraft. I am curious as to what others are seeing in terms of value for LT right now. I felt he was worth a shot here especially for a massive upgrade at QB for me. But I am curious as to the value he is returning for others.

Wow - think you got a steal here. Looks like Rivers is going to be throwing 40 times a game to me, and LT may be back this week. He wasn't wearing a boot Sunday; I'm guessing he'll practice Thurs or Fri and play against miami sunday.

Yep, this is my read as well. I was at the game Sunday, and watched it on TV again when I got home Sunday night. If LT was healthly, San Diego would have won on Sunday, as he'd have punched in at least one of those scores that instead became FGs.Sproles has been awesome in the passing and return games. He's been terrible in the running game, partly due to the OL problems, but partly due to the fact that he's not LT.

That's highway robbery you committed there. Hope you have something on the bench for week 5 though.
I felt the same way, especially in redraft and especially because Rivers seems like he should easily be a top QB this year. I do have tons of depth at RB and should be set for week 5, so I am lucky in that regard. But I think the typical view at this point is that people really just want to unload LT, which still seems a little crazy to me. LT is certainly not the LT of old but even last year in a bad year he still ended up putting up decent numbers. I have to think if he gets on the field he will be able to do that again this year at some level.

I agree. I can't for the life of me understand the level of vitriol that is suddenly leveled at Tomlinson. I had a guy in one of my leagues bet me that McGahee outscores Tomlinson over the rest of the season. WILLIS MCGAHEE!

That's okay, when I landed LT I had another owner laugh at me and tell me he honestly thinks Cadillac will outscore LT!

This is a good owner and not some guppy either. I don't get it.

I guess Alexander has left a bitter taste in people's mouths. That and LT is being held victim by the awesomeness of his own high standards.

It's probably because he's getting up there in age, has had a ton of NFL wear and tear, the injury bug has started nagging him and he has a younger, mapparently capable backup who seems able to get the job done when he is in there. But that's just me.

Sproles is averaging ~ 2.5 ypc this year. That's "getting the job done when he is in there"?

Getting up there in age? Thomas Jones was the #5 fantasy RB last year at age 30. Barry Sanders was a top-10 RB at 30. Emmitt Smith and Walter Payton were top-5 RBs at age 30 (and Payton was a top 5 RB at 31 and 32, too). Marshall Faulk was the #16 RB at age 30... despite only playing 11 games. Curtis Martin led the league in rushing at age 31. Tiki Barber finished 4th at age 30, and 7th at age 31. Most of these guys had very comparable levels of "wear and tear" to Tomlinson. Among Tomlinson's true peers (i.e. super-elite RBs), 30's not a huge cause for concern. Tomlinson's odds of a top 10 finish are already diminished by the fact that he's injured, but there's no reason to believe he can't (or won't) be top 10 in PPG this year. Also, Sproles is capable of getting the job done? He's averaging 2.6 yards per carry. San Diego got the ball inside Baltimore's 10 yard line four times last night, and walked away with a FG all four times. Sproles definitely is *NOT* getting the job done.

I think the 80 yard TD pass was getting the job done. His 5.4 last year was getting it done. But, I guess I'm wrong....how could LT2 EVER not be good? It'll never happen. You know........ I heard they used his poop as currency in Argentina. FTR, I have neither LT or Sproles. I don't have much of a dog in the fight and don't need to hype one to hurt the other. I just see the writing on the wall.

I guess what we got here is another December "bump/I told you so". Believe me, I don't wish ill will on the guy....it's just that I see a trend....Sproles being only one part of it.

Sproles is averaging ~ 2.5 ypc this year. That's "getting the job done when he is in there"?
I think the 80 yard TD pass was getting the job done. His 5.4 last year was getting it done. But, I guess I'm wrong....how could LT2 EVER not be good? It'll never happen. You know........ I heard they used his poop as currency in Argentina. FTR, I have neither LT or Sproles. I don't have much of a dog in the fight and don't need to hype one to hurt the other. I just see the writing on the wall.
You seem pretty emotional about it for someone espousing the bolded.Maybe LaDainian isn't great anymore, but the only reason he'd be a total write off would be if he's injured all year. Otherwise he'll be a productive back. And Sproles, as talented as he is, definitely lacks some qualities that Tomlinson brings.

I got angry with LT for a couple weeks, but lets be realistic. The guy just missed his first regular season game in his entire career... I don't think that means that he is washed up. He clearly isn't going to light it up like he did a few years ago, but still a top 10 back when healthy.
