Mon, Oct 16Recent NewsLes Bowen, of the Philadelphia Daily News, reports Philadelphia Eagles S Sean Considine replaced S Michael Lewis after Lewis allowed a fourth-quarter touchdown to New Orleans Saints WR Joe Horn during Week 6. There is a chance Considine could assume the starting role heading into Week 7.

(KFFL)

This is like saying that McNabb threw an interception, let's replace him with Garcia. If the Iggles do this, then they are dumber than I thought they were...

The Philly coaches have been fussing over Michael Lewis' coverage skills for some time and the coaches do like Sean Considine. Still, I'm reading Les Bowen's comment that "there's a chance" that Considine starts over Lewis this week with a Lloyd Christmas voice in my head.

"A chance, like what, one in ten or one in a hundred?"

"More like one in a million."

"So, you're telling me there's a chance....YES!!!"

I don't think it will happen but then again perhaps it is a way to start phasing him out. He hasn't been resigned by the team and I believe he is a free agent this next year, the team has resigned Sheppard, Brown and Dawkins in the past year or so but not Lewis.

Not true at all. I'm an Eagles homer and this has been brewing all season long. First, Lewis is great against the run, but REALLY has struggled in coverage. This is a knee jerk reaction to him blowing about ten coverages this season, not just the one to Horn on Sunday. Second, Considine has looked great. I haven't seen him in coverage by himself since he only plays in the dime, but he is an incredible tackler. He might not bring the big jarring hits that Lewis delivers, but he is rock solid. He is a fantastic one-on-one open field tackler. I don't know how he will react as a starter, but his coverage showed no weaknesses in the dime packages. The Philly media is all over Lewis and Jim Johnson about this. I would expect to see a lot more Considine. Don't go running out and start him, but for dynasty leagues, if he's around, it might not be a bad idea to stash him away. If he puts up six or seven tackles this weekend, everyone will be scrambling to grab him.

3 Questions With...

Jim Johnson

1: Did you feel helpless on the final drive?

Johnson: "Yeah, no question about it. We didn't come up with a third-down play. We had a big third-down play and we had too many men on the field. Killed us. We come back, we get a blitz, and the guy makes a great play against us. So it came down to those two plays."

2: What happened on the penalty when 12 men were on the field?

Johnson: "Omar's (Gaither) a rookie. Shawn Barber got hurt, we had Omar in there. He just missed that we had dime (package) and he was on the field and should have come off."

3: Talk about the decision to go with safety Sean Considine over Michael Lewis on that last drive.

Johnson: "Sean's a good player. He's a good safety, he's played that position before, and he did a good job in practice. It was hard. Mike was kind of frustrated. We decided to go with Sean and let (Lewis) settle down a little bit. But at the time, we thought we would let him settle down."

per Andy Reid's Press Conf(10/18 11:30am)

Q:Have you decided wether Michael Lewis will start or not?

Andy: We have packages for both guys they are both gonna play

Q: Is Michael gonna be in the base package(something like that)

Andy: At times Lewis will be in and at other times sean will be out there

someone also asked about hurting Mikes confidence and Andy said he would be fine(something along those lines)

Thanks Keg.

The Eagles aren't going to be any happier with Considine covering a WR when they bring seven and eight men on a blitz that doesn't get to the quarterback either. Live by the blitz, die by the blitz (see also: Plaxico Burress).

Do not make the mistake of dumping Lewis in dynasty leagues even if his stats end up taking a huge hit. Lewis is an excellent run supporting SS and will land in a system that may better highlight his talents. He may end up being a stud buy low candidate if this goes poorly for him in Philly.

completely agree, and its amazing how much that defense really misses kearse

:goodposting: if lewis keeps playing the way he is now, he will not be an eagle next year and considine will be the starting ss heading into camp. as we know, lewis is in the final year of his contract.

I picked up Considine at the start of the year because the Eagles didn't sign Lewis. The Eagles are notorious for not overpaying and regardless of Lewis's play this year there is a good chance he will be somewhere else in 2007.

Last time I checked...every SS had a very hard time covering the #1 WR on the opposing team. I'd say the replace the idiot that keeps putting the players in the terrible places to not succeed. The guy has talent and as a Redskins fan...I'd love it if they replaced Lewis w/ what his name.

16 team idp dynasty.....i own m. lewis.........i wasn't worried until bloom picked up constadine........ :wall:

I forgot that Lewis's contract expired at the end of this year. That pickup was for 2007 more than 2006. I wouldnt be worried about Lewis in 2007.

i took considine in 2 rook drafts last yr because it looked as if he was the heir to dawkins spot(owned dawk in one league)...dawk just seems to be getting better with age

Hold the phone there fellas....

Lewis and Considine are battling through different emotions. Lewis found it hard to hide his disappointment."It's a difficult time, yes, it is now," he said after Wednesday's practice at the NovaCare Complex. "At the same time, I'm a competitor and a worker, and I have to look forward to my opportunities."Considine did not want to seem too excited, especially since he will be taking playing time from his friend."It's part of the business and there are no hard feelings," Considine said. "If Mike ends up taking the job back, and I don't take another rep, I'll know I gave it my best shot and Mike stepped up. In the end, I think we will end up better for this because we are both pushing each other."Lewis, 26, has experienced trouble in pass coverage since last season. He is in the final year of a contract that pays him a base salary of $795,000. This is not how he envisioned making a salary drive."It's a situation of course I'm not happy with, but whatever I can do to help the team win, I will," Lewis said.
Seems like they're (at the very least) giving Considine a chance at taking the job...This "the defense misses Kearse talk" is also a little bizarre.Kearse was there when Lewis watched moulds blow past him for a TD in week 1, and he was there while Lewis was blowing coverages against the Giants in week 2. Antonio Bryant blew past Lewis in week 3 for a big score. The D-Line provided copius amounts of pressure in week 5 against the cowboys, while Lewis nearly cost them the game with a horrid pass interference penalty in the dying seconds of that game. Week 6 he once again left his jock in a pile on the field while joe horn blew past him for the go ahead TD.and don't get me started on his coverage last season....Have the guys pimping him actually seen him play the last 20 games? He's a great buy-low candidate if they move him to LB.

14 team IDP dynasty for us, I'm the M. Lewis owner and Magaw/Baker just picked up Consadine. I fell asleep on that one :bag:
trade ya considine for michael lewis... :excited: certificate made a good point... lewis' coverage troubles date at least back to 05... i thought he was such an asset in run support, & with b-dawk (& sheppard & brown) they were able to scheme around coverage weaknesses... also, i haven't heard any mention about his starting status being in jeapordy until very recently, so i (& probably a lot of people) pretty much got blinsided by this development...* michael lewis will land on his feet... he led all safeties & maybe DBs in solo tackles last season, so there should be more than one team vying for his services... it needs to be the right scheme, & he needs to be protected...that was uncanny... i was also thinking if his coverage limitations are too heinous, he is almost 225 & would probably make a great WLB conversion... he has always hit like a LB as an in-the-box run stuffer...

I blame J. Johnson (Def Coord) then, why is he calling plays that leaves his SS to cover #1 wr's on a regular basis? Especially if you know that one player is struggling. Matter of fact, that is the same basis that Reid should let the DL coach try out for the Def Coord. spot :sarcasm: I'll say it again, as a Redskins fan...please replace Lewis.

this is reasonable thinking and it is understandable that you are raising questions. the only problem is that the coaches are not happy with lewis either. they benched lewis after that play you mentioned and considine finished the game. i don't have a quote, but reid was asked if considine will start this weekend and he replied that "they both will play". then the reporter asked reid if lewis will be the base package ss and he replied.. "we have certain packages for both of them". now that does not mean that considine will see time in base packages, but clearly the coaches are not happy with lewis' play lately.

i made that comment and it was more in relation to how it has changed the rotation, and because of that you now have trent cole doing his damage on the 1st line and the 2nd line isnt near as strong as it was

:wall: It's not like theyre moving him up to cover man to man. If you have a SS that's unable to play any kind of zone defense, you're seriously handicapping your playcalling ability, and you should probably change your SS.Take the play against Dallas for example... all lewis had to do was stay deeper than the deepest WR. For some reason he decided to cheat up, watch glenn blow past him and grab his jersey on the way by.

I understand what you mean, but I don't think you can use it as an excuse for Lewis's problems.

Eagles: Lewis, Considine to split time

Eagles head coach Andy Reid isn't ready to fully bench starting safety Michael Lewis, but the former Pro Bowler will be splitting time with backup Sean Considine. "We're going to mix and match some things," head coach Andy Reid told the team's official web site. "We're doing packages with both the guys, so they're both going to play."

The writing is on the wall, this is the begining of the end of Michael Lewis as the SS in Philly.

So then there's a chance the Raiders win the Superbowl too?
