Is Mike Vanderjagt hurt or going to get cut? (1 Viewer)

Mike Vanderjagt is my kicker, but I hear whispers on the radio about Parcells having a short hook with kickers and something about Vanderjagt's hamstring. I am in the 2nd to last round of my draft at the start of the round and Jon Kasay or Reed, the Steelers kicker, they both are available. Would you cut Vandy for either of these guys? What news have you heard about Vandy - is he hurt?

I hear whispers, too... but nothing about this... did they tell you to stay away from the water? :tinfoilhat:

Kicker Mike Vanderjagt, nursing a sore groin, did not kick again in Thursday's morning practice. Parcells said he is unsure when Vanderjagt will resume kicking, but is holding out hope he can perform Saturday night - preferably handling both place kicks and kickoffs.

Vandy has been hurt all preseason with a groin strain. He had hoped that it would have healed by now, but it hasnt.

He hasn't kicked off at all in training camp, something that they had hoped to try this past weekend's game. But Vandy was a no-go.

Parcells will NOT want to keep 3 kickers, including the punter. I think that I recall that he's done it before, however, with teh Giants. But that said, Dallas has a VERY deep team this year. They will be cutting guys who will likely start on some other teams. Roster spots are at a premium.

Even if healthy, Vandy probably can't kick off very far. Suisham, another guy on the roster, has been routinely getting kickoffs inside the 5. Parcells loves field position. If he's losing 10 yards or so on every kickoff, he might have to keep 3 kickers, or cut Vandy.

I'd say there is a chance that Vandy will get cut. How high? I just don't know. Maybe 25% chance?

In his daily press conference, Parcells said that Vanerjact is not going to get cut. Whether or not he kicks off is in question, but his roster status despite the injury.

After all the kicking woes the Cowboys have endured in recent years, Parcells would be off his rocker to maintain his "short hook with kickers" mantra and cut Vanderjact.

from 8/22:

Cowboys kicker Mike Vanderjagt did not play Monday night against the Saints after not feeling 100 percent during warm-ups before the game. Vanderjagt said his groin was sore, but that he could have played if this game counted.

"I just wasn't comfortable enough," said Vanderjagt, who has been nursing a sore groin now for nearly two weeks. "If it was a regular season game . . . at this point, there's no point in rushing back if you're not 100 percent. Hopefully it's ready by Saturday so I can kickoff and kick field goals."

Parcells said this past week his plan was to have Vanderjagt handle kickoffs during next Saturday night's preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers at Texas Stadium, but was expecting him to kick field goals Monday night.

Vanderjagt did not practice kickoffs at all while in Oxnard, Calif. at training camp, and now hasn't attempted any field goals since hitting from 21 yards in the first preseason game against Seattle.

Backup kickers Shaun Suisham and Tyler Fredrickson made the most out of their opportunity, Suisham good from 24 and 42 yards and Fredrickson nailing a 49-yarder.

Suisham handled all but one of the kickoffs, and all but one landed inside the five.

"I thought our kickers, the ones that kicked, kicked pretty well today, both field goals and kick offs," Parcells said.
It's Vanderjagt, but I suppose stranger things have happened...

Parcells will be looking at a kid this weekend who punts and kicks. He says he is not as good as McBriar at punting, but his versatility may land him a roster spot if he is 95% of the punter McBriar is.

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. ;)

In all seriousness, unless his contract is VERY cap friendly, I doubt he's cut loose. Maybe PUP'd for a month or so, but not cut.

iirc, it was not Parcells who carried three kickers with the Giants, it was Dan Reeves, who carried David Treadwell (FG), Brad Dalouiso (KO), and some punter. I don't believe that Parcells ever carried three kickers.

At this point there is no"PUP for a month or so" option. If he gets on the PUP list, he'll have to miss the first 6 games.

Zdog, Reeves may well have as well. I just made that comment based on my recollection of various Parcells press conferences. I'm 99.9% sure that Parcells said he's carried 3 before.

They should keep him, you never know when you might need someone to push it 25 yards wide right with a chance to tie a play-off game in the dying seconds.

Afterwords he said (I'm paraphrasing here) "I'm as good as anyone who has ever played my position, and that is how I will be remembered" -ie, that this one play would not define his career. Sure think, Buckner.
