Is Now the Time to Sell Calvin Johnson? (3 Viewers)

I own Tate and Johnson. I'm starting to think that Tate might be the play going forward.

I'll probably stick with Calvin Johnson this week. If he can't be productive against the Bears, you have to start worrying.

He's having trouble getting open. That and he's always doubled. And the Oline isn't very good right now. And Stafford is Stafford.

Chicago, Tampa, Minnesota, Chicago. If I had Calvin, I wouldn't hesitate leaving him in during this stretch.

His last two match-ups were the toughest he will see all season. As mentioned previously, if he doesn't produce this coming week, then I would start to worry but I anticipate Megatron to dominate moving forward.

I totally disregard any poor game from a stud vs Belicheck. If Belicheck wants to stop you, he will. See Jimmy Graham last season.

The super poor man's Brett Favre at QB is not helping any either. That guy's mechanics are flat out garbage.

Dont own him anymore, but I wish I did right about now...

This next stretch of games, he's gonna Tron, for sure.

One thing I wish I would see out of him is some Dez Bryant/Brandon Marshall/ Moss/Rice/Owens, etc. throw me the damn ball right out of the gate attitude. It's amazing how many times the 1st quarter goes by and he has 1 target or less.

Come on, man, that's so 2012.

Announcers used to always rip his mechanics. Now every week they praise him for his diversified release points.

They got an UDFA at LT and another rookie playing RG. You can easily sack him dropping 7.

They do seem to have taken to the sidearm passes under the DL's arms. It's brutal to watch because those throws are very rarely 'wow' plays. More likely it's the receiver trying to pull a Houdini contortion while trying to haul in the off the mark pass. That along with getting Calvin in a position to take a shot from the defender. Calvin needs to just let the high throws sail over his head and comeback to the huddle and tell doofus that he's not going after that BS.

If I am Calvin, I am absolutely refusing to re-negotiate my contract to free up space....if that can get him out of there.....and to ATL. ;)

I hope that article fires him up.

Lots of stupid going on in here. A healthy Calvin will be in the Top 3 of all WR's the rest of the season. He has not lost a step. He is not a low-end WR2.
Please feel free to further educate us stupid folks then. You're saying it is the injury?

I apologize for being so stupid. I guess I'm still getting used to the New Megatron that jogs off the line and has defenders in his hip pocket.

Also, I may be stupid, but I have yet to see an athlete that can outrun Father Time. I certainly feel the on-field performance opens the conversation.

Again, my apologies for being so stupid.
outrun Father Time? The man is 29 years old. A lot of the all-time great WRs have their peak seasons in their early 30s. Based on the stories you read and hear about Calvin, his work ethic will make that a likely outcome for him.

Agreed; however, there are highway miles and then there are hard miles. A lot of the WR's with productive 30-plus careers are just a different body type, smaller, quick, more reliant on football-IQ than freakish physical gifts. Just spit-balling here but the guys that come to mind are Jerry Rice, Isaac Bruce, Monk, Largent, etc.

Not questioning CJ's work ethic, but he has taken more abuse than most in eight years.

I dangled Calvin in a 12 team ppr dynasty this past week ahead of the trade deadline, just to see what would get offered.

One offer: Victor Cruz and Kendall Wright for Calvin and Kenny Stills.

I declined.

And Larry Fitz a few years back, and Watkins this year, and pretty much everyone who faces this defense.

Careful with this. 6'3 receivers are the cream of the crop when it comes to wide receivers. Throwing stats like that around could lead one to believe that guys shorter than 6'3 might actually have value and even last longer. What?

Gordon absolutely slapped Talib and NE for 151/1, but I mean... he's not human, so it doesnt really count ;)

was offered julio and fleener in a std scoring redraft last week. i said no knowing full well he probably wouldnt do much against NE, but thinking he could dominate again the next 4 weeks

No one posted any stats and of course guys under 6-3 have value.

Plenty of the big physical WRs have produced in their early 30s at the same level or higher. Randy Moss' best seasons were in his early 30s. Terrell Owens had 15 TD catches at age 34. Andre Johnson caught 112 balls at age 32.

Rice's best seasons were ages 32-34, his 10th, 11th and 12th in the league. I personally think Johnson's best years are still in front of him.

I'm sure hoping he comes around. I own Tate, and picked up Stafford for his wk 15-16 playoff matchups. I think it will get easier at home vs. MINN and at Chicago. While I'm hoping for double dips to Tate, I really need Calvin to be Calvin. Actually, I'm most concerned that the improved defense has this team not needing to play video game football anymore.

I agree on all of the side arm throw stuff. But to be fair to Stafford, his receivers need to help him out. Fuller just hula hooped a beautiful bomb yesterday. Brutal.

Personally, any week where Calvin doesn't have a set back means he's that much closer to going off on one of his runs. He's too good. I sure wouldn't trade him with the upcoming schedule.

Not only that but he produced regardless of what hack is at QB. That guy is ridiculous. (He doesn't count) I can't figure out why he is so unstoppable as far as being covered. I just like the fact that he is on our redraft team 2 years running. Easily the 1st WR taken in redraft next year.

What stops Calvin more than anything is Stafford and the play calling. If I ran that team, Calvin would have a pass throw his way (or 2) the first set of downs every week. Instead they ignore him for the 1st Q. They are like Larry Holmes facing Mike Tyson, just standing there waiting to get knocked out.

Can't believe Calvin has gone from 7-154 2 TDs week 1 to being questioned as to how much he has left 10 weeks later. First  then :lmao:

Yeah, it's almost like he looked great in his FIRST game, and looks tired and banged up eleven weeks later. :whoosh:

Look, no one is saying he's cooked. But how long do you get to be "There's Megatron, and then there's everybody else!" Are we going to be posting dancing bananas if he goes 5-80-0 next week on 15 targets?

Nobody would be happier than me if he goes on a tear and looks like a man amongst boys again, but he has looked very ordinary these past two weeks. And the "yeah, but they were tough defenses" excuse is supposed to be for the other guys. You know, the one's that aren't match-up proof.

What makes me nervous about Calvin is he is always dinged up. Moss didn't have this many injuries going into his 30's, I don't remember but I don't think Rice did either. Andre Johnson did, but I think the reason he saw 112 catches is because he was the only pass catching threat on that team. Look this year, now that Hopkins has become 1a with Johnson. In redraft I wouldn't sell, but in dynasty I would sell him.

If he lays an egg this coming week, there is a problem. A short term one but not a Calvin has dropped a notch.

Rice didn't because the ball was where it was supposed to be for maximum damage to the defense. With the hack Stafford, the ball is usually high and thus the WR is open for a big hit. I've never seen a QB throw so many high passes in my life. Calvin's injuries are the team's fault and Stafford's fault. Take the slant that got him laid up for additional time. Awful placement of the throw and it allowed the defender to take his legs out. I remember screaming 'no' as the pass was arriving. Then the following SOB, m effing Stafford!

I agree that he has been injured by bad passes and team management, another thing that scares me is the fact he is so big and so fast. How long can those joints take that kind of punishment? I can't remember a receiver his size or near it that lasted this long. He also isn't the greatest route runner, he uses his physical abilities to get open. How long before his abilities come back to the pack because of age or injury and he isn't megatron?

hes dropped like 3 tds this season. in the panthers game, he missed an easy one. and another easy and tough one in the dolphins game. if he makes those plays, his numbers would obv look a lot different.

i do tend to agree that he doesnt seem to have the same explosion and separation. but i absolutely think he will age well. that size and ability in traffic does not diminish.

I started the year with a great WR corps of Calvin, Cobb, Julio. I moved Calvin first and over the weeks have turned that corps into ABrown, Cobb, OBJ. Feel that it's a better group now.

Crazy that both CJ and JJ have fizzled so badly. That kinda puts a dent in the Zero RB theory. It's more like just cross your fingers and hope the guy you pick with your first 3 picks doesn't bust.

Redraft for sure. For Dynasty, I'd still rather have Calvin/Julio.

No receiver is matchup proof if he faces constant double teams.

I don't watch a lot of Lions games, but, when I have watched, it doesn't seem like the coaching staff tries anything creative to free him up. So that isn't helping.

Put me in the camp that Calvin still has at least 3 more Megatron seasons and then a couple more good seasons after that, barring serious injury.

Wow, I see it opposite. Julio is always dinged up and Calvin is dinged up and old. Every year I have him his value would only go down. I sold him before the first game that he started but was just a decoy. That trade was $$$ for this year and honestly I think it will prove out that I sold him at his career high value.

I'm not sure he has been (constantly double-covered) these last two weeks. Maybe someone else can chime in here with game film or something, but it looked to me like ARZ and NEP played him a lot of straight-up man-to-man.

One has to assume that the ankle is a major contributing factor. If it's not, then he's definitely dropped a few notches in WR rankings.

I agree with a previous poster... if he doesn't light up CHI at home on Thanksgiving... then he's just Calvin (at least for 2014).

The "constant" double teams line is bull#### and been debunked.

Calvin was the staple to 2 championships for me in a 3 man keeper league from 2010-2012. His contract was too expensive to keep him in 2013. I hate to see this drop off, but glad I got to own him during a large chunk of his best years, In 2010 Andre Johnson was selected before him and he dropped to me as most were thinking AJ was safer (CJ had an off year in 2009 and AJ was coming off his career year).

Although I think CJ has a few more Megatron seasons left in the tank, I have now moved on to the Gordon's and Greens. I've had Gordon every year he has played and locked him up for at least 3 more years on a cheap contract this year after the weed episode when nobody wanted him, essentially picking him up for the cheapest contract available in our league before news broke that he would play this year. With the new higher drug threshold I wouldn't trade Gordon for CJ straight up at this point. However CJs contract is much more expensive so that is part of it, but I don't know if I would do the trade of Gordon for CJ even if they both had the same cheap contracts. (I think the drug threshold raising and the slate being wiped clean after one good year makes Gordon have significantly less risk now). In the years following the 2010 draft CJ was the no brainer every year first WR pick in redraft. Not sure if that is the case next year, but he has 5 games left to show something and retain the title.

The point of this is while CJ is still elite, his value might have slipped a bit this year, since in the past, specifically in 2010-2012 he was untouchable in a trade, now some consideration takes place. You could still make the argument that he is the best, where before you didn't need to.

but julio hasnt cost anyone their season. hes still a highly productive every week starter. hes kinda the reason why 0 rb is so effective. rather than busting out completely like some rbs drafted early like ball, peterson, ball, mccoy, gio, doug martin julio has put up starter numbers all yr.

If I had a top three pick next season it would be Gronk or Graham. They are the only guys I am sure will be at the top of their position next season. Lesean McCoy burned me badly this year.

I have Calvin and still managed to make the playoffs. But I also have Watkins, Jeffery, DT, and now Gordon to soften the blow.

Calvin Johnson, WR: -0.4

Breakdown: Johnson was covered by Brandon Browner (+2.6) with safety help for most of the game, and he struggled to get open. Stafford was 3-of-7 for 46 yards when targeting Johnson vs. Browner, including a dropped pass by Johnson and two passes defensed from Browner.
https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2014/11/24/refo-lions-patriots-week-12/
Browner shut down Brandon Marshall too. He also knocked around Demaryius Thomas pretty good in the Denver game. He's having another good year when matching up against big, physical WR. Calvin made a couple nice catches but he also looked lumbering instead of explosive. Maybe that was due to the physical play from Browner, but he definitely looked slower than usual.

I literally have this deal on the table in my dynasty PPR. My megatron for his Josh Gordon... I have till midnight to decide.

Pull the trigger. Gordon is supremely talented and younger. In Calvins defense, he mentioned on twitter that he was still dealing with the ankle. I expect him to be fine. A few months ago we were worried about Rodgers and Brady. We see how that turned out. Relax.
