Overrate?

Yes [ 0 ] ** [0.00%]

No [ 3 ] ** [100.00%]

Undecided [ 0 ] ** [0.00%]
You must be on inviso power then.I suggest you create another poll in which you both vote and spell "Overrated?" correctly.

ETA: If you want to cover old ground and revisit this glorious argument visit The Philip Rivers Bandwagon thread.

Also, LHUCKS what's it like to be so full of irrational vindictiveness? ;)

Why do you think he is overrated?
- His statistics are misleading - He made the Pro Bowl- He had a key turnover at a critical time in a playoff game- Defenses were able to to significantly limit his effectiveness after they realized his limited capabilities- His supporting cast opens up the passing game more than it would for most other QBs- His accuracy and decision making were inconsistentRight place, right time to weasel into the ProBowl...looking forward to the Chargers living with their critical mistake of not figuring out how to keep Brees on the team, which will prove to be the error that prevents them from winning a SuperBowl. Which is exactly what I said would happen six months ago.

Is he a top 10 qb - yup, top 5 - not yet but will be.

Was Brees overrated?

These were his #'s last year in his 4th year as a starter with nearly the same supporting cast....323 500 3576 7.2 24 15 and in Rivers 1st year as a starter he went for....284 460 3388 7.4 22 9.

I don't think the Pro Bowl is a good measure of how rated someone is, good bad or otherwise. It's a bit like the baseball All Star game.

I wouldn't say nearly the same supporting cast. The addition of Marcus McNeill was HUGE.

I didn't realize the 4th quarter of regular season games was all that mattered. Further, I've given a synopsis as to why those numbers are misleading in the first place.

I dont know if Im "looking forward" to see the Chargers implode, but I definitely think they made a massive mistake by picking Rivers over Brees. Brees shoulder injury really clouded the situation because it was uncertain if he would ever regain his pro-bowl form. Still, on an even playing field, I dont know how AJ Smith ever could have vouched for Rivers over a healthy Brees. I guess we'll never know.

This is the key points...whenver you make a prediction and/or like or dislike a player, you seem to stand by your thoughts and try to continuously rationalize them no matter how much evidence is against you.

With the exception of him though, Gates, LT, Neal, Parker, McCardell, Diehlman, Olivea, Hardwick, etc. were all there.

slow down. Brees in his 4th year, not 4th qtr.

I think outside of the box by utilizing qualitative assessments. Any stat monkey can spew passer ratings and completion percentages. :monkey:

Agreed. So if you're gonna say critical turnovers Brady made a HUGE one on 4th and 5. Is he overrated? Of course not. He had 3 picks and a worse game than Rivers, is he a worse QB than Rivers? Of course not. LHUCKs before this turns into 11 pages. Please post your list of top qb's and where you believe Rivers is ranked by the masses (to be considered overrated) and where you have him. Thanks.

You mean like Brees was in 2004 when he was a 3rd year starter that didn't go 14-2 on the Chargers, and got bounced in the wild card game by the Jets? That Drew Brees? Or the one in 2002, 2003 and 2005 that didn't even make the playoffs?

That's your opinion and something that can never ever be proven so it's really not worth debating. If Vjax taps his toe we aren't having this conversation. Let alone the number of other drops on perfectly thrown balls. He wasn't even close to the reason they lost the game, not close. Seriously if there were 10 reasons why they lost he wouldn't be one of the 10.

Seems pretty relevant unless you think Rivers is rated way higher than Brees.

Depends on how you are rating him in the first place I'd think.

If you are rating him below Brunell, Johnson and Simms(as a few people did on this board if I recall correctly) then I guess the answer would be "NO". Wouldn't you agree with that LHUCKS?

what does comparing two QBs' years have anything to do with whether or not Rivers is currently overrated?

Leinart. You're funny. That list about ends the conversation. It was a good trip though.BTW..Cutler blows Leinart's doors off so Cutler should be ahead of him as well.

So are you calling Brees a good QB? You do know where he played his college ball, right.

More fun with Drew Brees:

Rivers 1st year as a starter stats:

284/460, 61.7% completions, 3388 yards, 7.37 ypa, 22 td, 9 int, 92.0 rating, 14-2 record

Brees 1st year as a starter stats:

320/526, 60.8% completions, 3284 yards, 6.24 ypa, 17 td, 16 int, 76.9 rating, 8-8 record

hmmmmmmmm................

So in your new list Rivers is an above average QB that shoudn't be included in the top 10? I don't think you'll find a lot of people to argue with though I'm sure tommygunz and MT will put up a mild fight he should be in the top 10. Not sure why you're starting a whole other thread though. Why not just bump last years "Rivers Overrated" thread????? Trying to distance yourself from that thread?

Wasn't one of your arguments about River's great supporting cast? Shouldn't a QB you rate higher than Rivers done better with the same supporting cast?

No, because we're talking abour right now, where you believe Rivers is in the "maturation" process is another topic.

He better not be - I just drafted him in the 1st round of the "Build a franchise" draft. :lmao:

I'm not vindictive, I become fascinated with topics where the general public(guppies) are completely off on their assessments...usually due to media hype.Nothing like giving the guppies some fish food.

I don't think you usually make personal attacks(at least of posters on the board) so why do you think it got deleted?I just think all the arguments in this thread are more or less going to be retreads of the same arguments in the other thread. Why bother with a whole new thread on "I hate Rivers and statistics or wins don't mean anything to me". Now you seem to have changed your position to claiming Rivers is an above average QB but not a top 10 QB..... is this controversial to some people?

LHUCKS reason for his negative obsession towards Philip Rivers, is because Rivers is a good player, who didn't play in the pac10. Sad and weird, but true.
I just listed plenty of non-Pac10 players above him...my conference shtick begins and ends in the FFA.

How many QB's are in the NFL LHUCKS?...... oh damn, I forgot, you hate the use of #'s when defending your position! You've really got this schtick down to a science. Well, at least a science where #'s or any other tools of measurment can ever be used.

I never make personal attacks unless first attacked...I'm here to discuss football with other sharks who know football, not to feel better about myself after a childish name calling contest.I think it got deleted because it may have been deemed as an attempt to "incite", which it wasn't. I basically said he choked in the playoffs and for whatever reason that was deemed not acceptable. But I prefer to not talk about all of that...back to why Rivers is overrated please.

He's 14th at best, and there are a handful around him that are about the same level.Pretty sure that makes him average.

Nice to see only 61% of the pool disagrees with me...I actually thought that number would be higher.

Rivers is not overrated in the sense that he (1) was the QB of a team that won a lot of games (2) statistically, ranked very high relative to many of his peers, and (3) was only in his first year as a starter.

#1 - same goes for Rex Grossman

#2 - same goes for Jon Kitna

#3 - Same goes for Vince Young

Rivers IS overrated in the sense that (1) he is clearly not in the top-20% of all starters in many/any statistical categories aside from wins and (2) his performance exists in a single season, not over multiple years.

#1 goes for Pennington as well.

#2 goes for Cutler.

So, the answer to your question is yesno.
