Is the Pro Bowl the worst game in pro sports? (1 Viewer)

Not even a front page thread at a hardcore FF website like FBG. I flipped to the game for a few minutes and couldn't believe how awful it was. Worst than I remember it. I quickly flipped back to the NHL All Star Superskills competition which was WAY better.

Just stop the charade NFL and get rid of the Pro Bowl. Name your All Stars or whatever if you want, but get rid of the game. Just have a bunch of skills competitions like Fastest Man, Strongest Man, QB skills, etc.

I think Baseball honestly has the best all-star game and thats not saying much. NHL was bad this year based on none of the fan voters started.

This game meant more to the players from a conference pride perspective in the 70's and early 80's. It's a joke now.

Yeah its terrible, borderline unwatchable. The defensive lines are the worst. The pass rushers dont even try, they just kinda jog in place.

This game means nothing. Baseball, basketball and hockey, in that order, are better.
Baseball is the only one that matters. The NHL all-star game is nothing more than 60 minutes of penalty shots. Nobody wants to get hurt. The NBA all-star game lost all credibility (if it had any in the first place) when they put on a dunk contest in the last two minutes a year or two ago.

It is kind of stupid to have DeMarcus Ware, Brian Orakpo, Cameron Wake, etc... in the game but then require a 4-3 defense with no blitzing.

It means nothing to the fans, but if you were a player wouldn't after a tough, gruling five months, be fun to go to hawaii and just play a game for fun with no meaning.

I was just thinking that if I was a player, after a tough, grueling five months it would be fun to go to Hawaii and just play a game for fun with no meaning.

When they played it after the Superbowl it was like the after dinner mint to the superbowl and it was fine but a mint is no appetizer for the superbowl.

If they are going keep this schedule then I agree, get rid of the game and make it about skill challenges that win prizes for a select/lottery type situation, for the people that vote for the player to be in the pro bowl. Fans winning cars and superbowl tickets and whatever else sponsors want to throw in will make me watch.

I dont mind it. If you dont like it, then maybe don't watch it? It's great for NFL fans in Hawaii, it's fun for the players and their family, and it's not meant to be a serious game.

Meh...every year people complain about the Pro Bowl as if they are forced to watch it. The NFL doesnt try to market it as anything more than an exhibition game with a different rule set, are people expecting something more?

Nice run by AD as usual.

Isn't there someone else who could be running the ball though?

I would hate to see him hurt in a meaningless game.

It's dumb. I don't mind watching extra football. It's just that many of these guys aren't *true* Pro Bowlers. Dilutes the meaning of what would otherwise be a great distinction.

I think most people have indicated that they AREN'T actually watching it or watched only a bit before turning it off. My guess is that the Nielson ratings will reflect that. I think we're all just expressing our desire for something BETTER than what the NFL puts out as their product right now. Surely that's a legitimate undertaking, no?

It's worse now cause besides everyone backing out for being hurt.....now you don't get any players from the superbowl teams, so it waters it down even further.

Imagine the pro bowl after a 18 game season?

but when I was a kid....I loved the game, just seemed to be a lot better pool of talent and I don't know always liked looking at all the different helmets on one team....got a big kick outta that.

Horrible!!

Why have a game at all? Just name the players and fly them to Hawaii for a week to party.

I doubt it would crush everything else. Id be curious to see the #s when they come out.

I think the pro bowl would be more interesting if they used it to test fun and odd tweaks to the rules. A list of examples from which 1-2 could be selected each year:

1. field goals are worth 4 from 40-49 yards, 5 from 50-59 yards.

2. a penalty box for certain penalties, resulting in 10 v 11 power plays.

3. teams can attempt an onside kick on any down. Once it passes 10 yards, it is a free ball and can be recovered by either team.

4. test out the idea of putting a computer chip in the football to determine when it crosses the goalline.

5. have teams "bid" for control of the football at the start of the game via sealed bid instead of determining via coin flip. Whichever team selects the worst field position gets the ball. Team A bids for the ball at their 15. Team B bids for the ball at their 9. The ref opens the sealed bids, reads them aloud and announces that team B wins and gets the ball for having the superior bid.

6. teams get 5 downs in a possession.

7. If you collect a first down on 3 consecutive plays, you get to play offense with a 12th man for the rest of the drive.

8. If you get 2 sacks in a quarter, you get to play defense with a 12th man for the rest of the quarter.

Last years Pro Bowl was the highest rated all-star game in any sport. Tonight will crush whatever was on TV. America loves football.

I've said this before and I'll mention it again. What would be really exciting is an all-star college team vs the worst team in the NFL. They used to play the Super Bowl winner vs a college all-star team but that was always a blow out. I think you could put together an all-star college team that could compete against the worst NFL team if they had a month to prepare.

Good luck getting "the worst NFL team" to go play that game with pride.YAY.... WE SUCK!

Why not take a page from the NHL and name two captains who draft teams?

Tailor the game towards the fantasy fan. Have the fantasy stats add up for each side (point per catch, yards, TDs, etc.) and play six 10-minute quarters, each with a different lineup. You can only use certain players a limited amount of time (i.e. with 3 QBs you can use each one for two periods only).

Making the game for fantasy players does 3 things:

1. Tailors the game to the fantasy player

2. Educates the casual football fan to fantasy

3. Acknowledges how big fantasy football is now to the sport

I can't believe people think college players could compete against any NFL team. 1) the NFL and the teams would never agree to it. It's the very definition of no-win. 2) the NFL team would humiliate the college team.

Why not make it Rookies vs Vets or alternatively, for a bit more fun, Rookies vs Incoming draft class.

That'd liven it up a bit.
