Is Tony Dungy too nice? (1 Viewer)

I posted this in the other thread and thought a thread on Dungy is needed. Mods, if that isn't the case, then go ahead and delete this thread.

I would love to see Dungy go get into the face of some players and just yell at them once. The man is too nice, and I think the defense is partly soft because of it, to go along with their lack of size. Dungy's demeanor is soft, and so is their defense. Now I'm not saying act like a raving lunatic on the sidelines and yell all the time, because that doesn't do any good either, but a good mixture of Dungy and Cowher would suffice. Also, I would love to see Dungy disagree with the refs some of the time

I don't know the answer to your question. I just remember that not too many years ago Dungy was considered to be an almost Defensive genius while at Tampa. So, maybe he is partially to blame, but I don't think he can take the whole burden. I think the Colts have spent most of their salary cap money concentrating on the offensive side of the ball, so they don't have as much money to spend on defense. That could be the bigger root of the problem. Like I said, I don't know this is just my speculation.

 Umm- I think Dungy is actually known for his tough defenses....do you remember how good Tampa were under Dungy. Back then people were ripping on his offense.

He actually did a great job on the Indy D last year....does anyone remember the Indy D before Dungy??? This year he has seen his fair share of injuries which is the primary reason the Indy D is struggling. This has nothing to do with Dungy's demeanor.

You are right about the $$ to spend on defense, but I also think a team is a reflection of their coach. Even if they are less talented, they could certainly play with more emotion. Dungy aside, If Bill Polian has any sense at all he will go out and pull a rabbit out of hat in a trade or FA market. Maybe two rabbits is in order.

They don't seem to play with any emotion. That's as plain as the nose on your face.

The last time the Viking defense was dominant was when Tony Dungy was the DC. So much so that he got his 1st HC job and turned the worst francise in the NFL into super bowl contenders because of thier defense.

Now as the HC of the Colts he has taken a defense that was one of the worst in the NFL and made them into an above average defense with most of the teams reources still being allocated to the offensive side of the ball.

No I do not think his mild manner has anything to do with how well the defense performs.

ETA- :fishing: unless you are really serious?? If so :bs:

Really? They've certainly played with emotion every game I've seen them play in since Dungy's been there. If they're not this year, it goes back to the size issue. Being pushed around by bigger guys and having the ball rammed down your throat will suck the life out of any defense.

The only thing wrong with that defense is the fact they do not have any DT capable of playing that position within Dungy's scheme.

don't forget that this defense was #2 in the NFL last year in points allowed (i think)...

i don't know whether they are tough or not, but they were pretty effective...

they have lost some players (again, because of all the cap $$$ allocated to offense)...

larry triplett went to BUF

david thornton went to TEN & is having a good year

bob sanders is out & they really miss him... he is the guy that lent an element of toughness

freeney is having an off year & i'm not sure why

there CBs were pretty banged up, too... in first month, harper, david & jackson have all been hurt at various times

The Colts have a habit of playing down to their opponent-- as long as the opponent isn't Denver in the playoffs. Even when they get big leads, they get soft. They don't have a killer instinct, and that might be a reflection on the coach.

They decided the "solution" wasn't to get tough. The solution was to get the best kicker in football to pull out the close games. He's been hurt but they haven't needed him-- yet. They want him for the playoff games imo.

To answer the question-- Dungy is "nice" by coach standards. But rather than make a successful coach change, they're trying to do other things to work with the personality they have.

I like the approach. Buddy Ryan talked tough but never did anything as a head coach.

* Edited to add that they did need Vinatieri against the Giants.

You do realize you're talking about a team that just last year had an opposing quarterback flip them off for dirty tactics employed by the defensive line, right? A D-line coached by a coach who has been called on the carpet at NFL headquarters for teaching those same dirty tactics. If anything a nice-guy Dungy is probably a good influence on the Colts.

I don't see Lovie getting in the face of the Chicago defense...and he's a pretty nice guy.
