Dolphins RB Jaylen Wright said he’s in better shape than he was as a rookie.
Fantasy managers taking late-round stabs on Wright this season will be happy to hear this. The speedy second-year back said he “lost a lot of body fat” this offseason while gaining “a lot of muscle” and estimating that he’s put on roughly six pounds. It’s a marginal increase, but one that Wright clearly hopes will help him better manage his second year in the pros as he’s expected to take on a bigger role with Raheem Mostert now out of the way. Wright rushed 68 times for 249 scoreless yards last season and posted a 9-6-0 rushing line over his final five games of the season. It was disappointing, to say the least. Wright will hopefully have more value as a handcuff to De’Von Achane this season, but any stand alone value will likely be dependent on Achane’s availability.

Opening day right around the corner. Get excited, folks! :pickle:

Ever notice how the only players who get in better shape are the ones who sucked the year prior? 🤔
Right?! I mean take Wright in the OP. What possible reason would a rookie have to be out of shape?!

Like bro, you just got drafted. This was your dream. All that work. That should be the “best shape of your life”. It shouldn’t be possible to ever be in better shape than your rookie year. Cmon man.

It's the same for kickers. Ever year they suck, you hear about them changing their kicking style. Dude, your original style is what got you into the league. Just admit you either don't belong, or say you had the yips.

I’ll throw Moody a bone because he got seriously hurt on that tackle (which saved a TD) and was never back to normal.

He said he’s changing to a 2-step pre-snap from a 3-step to focus on accuracy over distance. And he’s definitely owned his bad play after the injury.

To me that’s a legit deal. Otherwise yes I agree.

The Fred Taylor Special
I still think Fred Taylor is an underrated back. Dude was a beast when healthy, and he wasn’t as often injured as his legacy implies with the “fragile Fred” moniker. I’ve always liked his game, and feel he was bashed on more for not continuing his prolific TD pace more than for being hurt. He came out the gate with 14 TD his rookie year, then 6 in 10 games, then another 12 in 13 games.

2001 was the year everyone seemed to finally buy-in, and a lot of folks got burned.

But from 2002 to 2004 he missed only 2 of 48 games (both in 2005) starting 16 in 2002 & 2003.

2006 he started 11, then 2007 & 2008 he started 15 games each season. Those were in his age 30 & 31 seasons, btw.

2008 at 32 he started 13 games.

So in 7 years from 2002 through 2008 dude started 100 of a possible 112 games, close to a 90% clip. That’s hardly fragile.

But I digress. Fred Taylor is presumably not in the best shape of his life at 49.

How did you know I was talking about Moody? hahaha
Three things though
1) As a Niner fan, you are likely giving him a second chance because you drafted him early. Just admit it
2) How can he focus on accuracy over distance? He doesn't have distance to begin with. In 2 years, he is a paltry 50% on FG's 50+. And what's probably worse, he is 58.8% from 40-49 yards. He should've said he is focusing on accuracy over inaccuracy.
3) He has to own his stats. He's the friggin kicker! Sure, I guess he could blame the long snapper or holder, or even the D for being in his way.

I don't think he said he was out of shape. Apparently he gained 7 pounds "of muscle" and feels like he is in better shape this year.

He just turned 22 and yes, even professional athletes can get in better shape, especially when they have the best training expertise available to them.

The point is, we wouldn't even be hearing about him adding a few pounds of muscle if he didn't sucks balls last year.

Very limited opportunity and the Dolphins were a mess. Mostert dropped from 4.8 YPC in 2023 to 3.3 last year. Even Achane went from 7.8 to 4.5. New year.

Wright is young and good to see he gets it early. Not like Dak Prescott who brags about being in the best shape of his life after 9 years in the league.

How dare you, sir! I resent that implication, and I’m disgusted that you could even say, nay, even suggest such a thing!

*I’m giving him a second chance because I have him on a fantasy dynasty roster.

Sure, I guess he could blame the long snapper or holder, or even the D for being in his way.
The high ankle sprain was legitimate excuse IMO.
He's been fine from inside 40, making 29 of 30 (96.7%) since coming into the league. But to be 16 of 29 (55.2%) from 40+ is downright terrible, and can't all be blamed on an ankle sprain. If that was the case, his short FG's would suffer too. My point is, if SF hadn't drafted him in the 3rd round, he would probably be a backup kicker right now, in search of a job. As it is, he is the frontrunner over Joseph, who is nearly 10 percentage points higher from 40+, and like Moody, only has one miss from under 40, but with more than double the attempts.

If only I had a nickel for every time a player said "he was in the Best Shape Of His Life (BSOHL). Only to go on and still suck, or suck even more or get hurt. :kicksrock:
