Sources close to the situation in the Bay Area are reporting that Russell will be signed before the weekend is out. Where are all the haters now? :hifive:

The newest star is about to begin his career. The resurrection of the Raiders is soon to be full-throttle ahead.

Thank goodness. I was wondering how they were going to get through week 1 without that clipboard being held.

I think you may be underestimating Culpepper's ability here. He got plenty of work at this position last year in Miami and proved that he is more than capable of doing this important job.

He just wants to sign the contract before their week 1 game so he can bleed the team of a full season-worth of game checks.

My sister-in-law bought me a Russell jersey for my birthday at the beginning of August. It's still in the bag with the tag on it. I didn't want to wear it until he signed. Maybe I'll be able to break it out for Sunday's game.

Link? Or source if not a link?

too little too late for this year
:yes:On the team by the weekend. Should be on the field sometime 2008!?!?!
The worst part is, that holding out that long really does just about waste the entire year for him. There is SO much that teams do during training camp, that if a QB misses all of that, he's starting so far behind that it's going to be difficult to catch up. Once the season starts, coaches don't have time to hold the hands of players that are behind and slowly bring them up to speed. I doubt that he gets nearly as much out of this year now.

Sources close and a little birdie told me are about the exact same in case like this! Keep em coming little birdies!!!

This is just a plot to motivate Andrew Walter.

Russell has fanned the flames of optimism by confiding in an associate that he intends to be in Oakland and under contract by Saturday night, according to a league source.

A deal isn't imminent, by all accounts. There is much work to do. Yet, both parties have plenty of motivation.

For one, Russell stands to lose 1/17th of whatever his salary would be for each week he misses once the regular season begins.

Secondly, the Raiders are obligated to pay veteran quarterback Daunte Culpepper $3.2 million if he is on the roster as of Saturday night. They owe Culpepper only $750,000 if he is released before then.

Salary-cap room is not an issue for the Raiders with or without Russell

factored into the equation.

The $3.2 million isn't a lot to pay a starting quarterback, if that were Culpepper's role. However, it's a huge salary for someone who failed to beat out journeyman Josh McCown and now is a backup.

Also, the $2.45 million net savings is money that could be used to bridge the gap between what Russell is seeking in guaranteed money and what the Raiders are offering.

Talks have become more frequent in recent days, though there hasn't been a major breakthrough. Russell's assertion that he intends to join his teammates signals that it's time for both sides to compromise on a contract that figures to land Russell as much as $30 million guaranteed and keep him the property of the Raiders for the next six years.

Continuing on the current course doesn't benefit anyone. Russell already has missed a critical part of his rookie season and isn't expected to help the Raiders this season.

The Raiders can't afford to let the situation get any further out of hand, for reasons that transcend a public relations nightmare.

If Russell remains unsigned, they run the risk of his re-entering the NFL draft next year. At that point, the Raiders would be ineligible to draft him and would not receive any compensation.

Also, the Raiders cannot trade the rights to Russell until the season ends, per the guidelines set forth in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

In short, time is of the essence.

:lmao:

Why not do this? What's wrong with trading his rights at the end of the year for a first round rookie pick in 08? He isn't going to do anything this year anyway. If he doesn't sign before the first game, I predict that this could go on a much, much longer time and he may not be signed at all.

I think he has a shot at getting in some games this year. It might be during garbage time, but I can see the Raiders doing whatever it takes to get him snaps this year.

If the Raiders have to choose between Walter and Culpepper, hopefully they trade the guy who can bring back the most in return. Supposedly there is a decent amount of interest in Walter.

If Russell is predicting he will be on the team this weekend it is time for Oakland to cinch it up and hold to the company line.

No one was really thinking Russell was going to come in ready to go even if he had a full pre-season do they? Granted it would have been possible due to his competition at the time. Picking up Culpepper changed the balance so they have a legit starter for the season and can now hold fast and sign the rookie late - it provides them with an excuse not to cave to public sentiment and play him immediately.

Is McCown starting week 1? Is there a reason such as the incentives in Culpeppers contract? If you are going w/ your #2 QB for some reason my beloved Lions may be the team to risk it. Tell me Davis isn't crazy enough to think in tangents like that.

OAKLAND, Calif. - JaMarcus Russell apparently is moving closer to joining the Oakland Raiders.

Representatives for the first overall pick in April’s draft met with Oakland Raiders officials late Friday, according to a report in the Oakland Tribune.

The talks were the first in two weeks, and coach Lane Kiffin said that Russell could be signed as soon as Saturday. According to the report Russell told an associate that he expects to sign and be in Oakland by Saturday night.

Raiders, Russell can't seal the deal

Meetings between Raider officials and the agents for No.1 draft pick JaMarcus Russell that commenced Friday carried over into Saturday, though the two sides failed to hammer out a contract by night's end.

At issue is the nature by which Russell would receive as much as $31 million in guaranteed money on a six-year contract that potentially could net the rookie quarterback approximately $60 million.

The two sides met Saturday morning, took a break in the early afternoon and then resumed negotiations mid-afternoon at an undisclosed location. The talks ceased around 10 p.m., with both sides open to resuming talks today, though there aren't firm plans to do so because the Raiders kick off the season with a game against the Detroit Lions.

Russell's primary agent, Eric Metz, did not return a phone call. Raiders officials could not be reached for comment.

One person familiar with the negotiations said there is hope for a deal getting done in the coming days based on the progress made the past two days. That person cautioned that the nature of such a complex deal makes it susceptible to falling apart at any time.

The meetings of the past two days represented the first face-to-face talks in the Bay Area since training camp started without Russell on July 26

how about just simply jamarcus''show me money''russell
i had a dream last night and JaMarcus Russell was in part of it. I was there when he signed his contract, then as he walked out of the condo where he'd been holed up during the negotitation process... a bunch of FBI came out and arrested him on charges of doing something to a minor. Al Davis looked at me, with the contract clenched in his fist, and the papers disintegrated.I'm not saying that I am psychic, but sometimes my dreams do play out that way... JaMarcus make sure to check their id, 7 minutes in heaven is never worth 7 years behind bars.

I hope Darth Vader isn't too upset to go all out for the game today. He and Spikey-shoulder guy invested a lot into the JaMarcus hype I'm sure.

Who knows, could be worth something if he didn't end up signing

Is there a cutoff day by which Russell must be signed or he goes back into the pool for next year, ala Bo Jackson?

No.
There must be.At the very least it's April 28, 2008. Are you telling me he's Raiders property until the Raiders are on the clock with the #1 again next year?
:( Yeah, that's what I'm telling you.
I guess you're right. From Wiki..."Jackson was drafted 1st overall in the 1986 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But Jackson wanted to be a professional Baseball player so he rejected the Buccaneers 5 year offer. Since he did not sign with a team by the 1987 draft his rights were forefited by Tampa Bay and his name was thrown back into the draft. The Oakland Raiders selected Jackson in the 7th round with the 183 overall pick."

The main rumor monger over at the main Raider message board is claiming Russell is signed. Will be announced today or tomorrow. He is also saying McCown has a broken finger and that Culpepper gets the start in week 2.

No link, as it is from a pay section of the site. This was passed long by another Raider fan.

Just a rumor I am passing along.

I've not been following this story at all.

Why has he not signed yet? It it about the money, or is there something else that he wants?
