Jags LB'er situation next season (1 Viewer)

the rumors at the time durant was drafted that was he would make peterson expendable in 08 or 09. he seemed to play pretty damn well when given the chance. what are the chances peterson leaves now? i don't expect durant to move to the middle anytime soon but hiis potential looks good with the other rookie LB'ers to emerge this year.

Durant has been so successful at WLB, I'd be very surprised to see Mike Peterson still in Jacksonville without a BIG pay cut. I think the future is Jax clearly is Durant at WLB, Smith at MLB and Ingram at SLB. If not '08, then '09. It says something that the coaching staff isn't exactly pushing him back for the playoffs. I know he's not ready to play, but they aren't talking like they really need him.

Durant has been a monster... all over the field. I drafted Da Smith hoping he would become the man in Jax... but that doesn't look like its going to happen.

Smith has been playing well at MLB, which IIRC he was drafted with this in mind and speculation at the time was possibly Peterson moving over to WLB. Now Smith has enough experience to handle being the play caller and I agree with radiohead417 that they may not need Peterson back. I don't see any positional changes happening since what they have now is working well so why fix it? This in turn may lead to Peterson being let go depending on his contract status.

HC Del Rio is a former MLB and commited to playing the best players he has regardless of seniority. Maybe it is premature to think they have enough trust in Smith to let Peterson go (I dont think Peterson would accept or deserves a backup role and Del Rio will probobly work with him on this by cutting him if that is his decision) but I think Smith has finaly turned the corner.

Much will depend on how much salary Peterson gets in 2008.

Durant will be a starter in '08. No questions asked. He has off the charts physical skills and has been around the ball ever since he was inserted into the lineup. Look at his #'s. The only down game was the Panthers game and for some reason no one on the defense put up any stats that day. Would like to see what he could do at MLB as he has Beason/Willis-lite potential. Probably will be the WLB. Look for Keith Bulluck-like #'s in the near future.

Durant is the truth. GOing to be a hell of a OLB. I think Imgram is the least "playmaker" out of the group.

I see Durant/Peterson/SMith next year

I can't imagine Ingram sitting, he's their only guy who can play SLB. I think all of it depends on Peterson's recovery and his willingness to reduce his salary, along with Durant's development in the offseason. Durant will be in the mix, seems like it will be hard to get him off the field.

Peterson is making huge money next year(5 MIL?). Like the earlier poster said, Peterson is probably gone without a pay cut.

Peterson still has the talent to start and put up good numbers. Will be interesting to see where he lands if they get rid of him.

..odds are Peterson will be back next year.. Contract wise (I may be off a year) but I believe MikePete has next year left with the folowing season as a 'club option' type thing in his contract.. I'd say based on how the Contracts play out for Jax that Ingram will be the odd man out...

as somone mentioned earlier, JD has freakish skills ~couple that with Smiths ability to play all three LB positions very well then I'd say it'll be Smith(SLB), Peterson(MLB), and Durant(WLB).. if there's a negative it's been MikePete's propensity to get hurt the last couple years.. and that could indeed lead to some changes.. aside from that.. those 3 LB's should be as good as it gets in the NFL next year..

Williams was in fact hired today. This should be interesting.

Mike Peterson: 3 base + 1.6 roster bonus = 4.6 million

Not outrageous for a cap hit, Jags supposedly have plenty of cap room too. Just wait and see if the Jags pay the bonus this offseason. I imagine they like their depth at this position with Clint Ingram too.

SLB Ingram

MLB Peterson

WLB Durant

Smith has been adequate, but Durant should push him with his athleticism

That is a lot of money for a guy who has been shut down in the last 2 yrs.SLB IngramMLB DurantWLB SmithJD was a monster when he was starting... I'm a Smith owner and JD should pass him for the MLB.It seems Smith will be WLB for his career; he has had 2 attempts at MLB and really didn't impress.

I agree, interesting. What would Gregg Williams running the D mean for the Jags LBers. If I'm correct the MLB's has piled up very good numbers (even during the Lemar Marshall days) during Williams regime in Washington. However, the OLBs has been decent at best (see Marcus Washington). Can we expect a similar development in J-ville? :own3d:

There really shouldn't be any change in Jax LBers FF value... MLB Should be in the top 15 - 10 w/ a chance @ top 5; depends on talent The WLB might increase some, really depends on the talent... if its JD, you could be looking at atleast top 25. Rocky Mac was doing very well before his injury.

a key where Smith is concerned is that he is solid at all 3 LB'er positions.. Ingram doesn't seem to have that 'every LB'er position ability at this point..so you could see Smith playing the SLB role...Durant (who last season excelled when used in all 3 places as well) is simply a 'freak' with lightning quickness.. and may end up being one of the true steals of last years Draft.. Jax is in great shape Cap wise this offseason so they may hold on to 'Mike Pete'...although if there is opportunity to gain value for him in some fashion don't be surprised if a move is made....as mentioned earlier, Peterson not being able to complete the last two years healthy could play into this...don't be surprised if they don't attempt to bring in yet another LB'er that has experience in Williams' system though... they also seem to have lots of what most say "adequate bodies" for DL..(especially DE~ but the guys they have either rush the passer well or play the run well.. but not both))they are looking for that dominant DE who can play run and pass both...DT is solid IF Henderson and Stroud stay healthy...add in Derek Landri's emergence as a force at the end of the year and they definately look to have more over all tools in the front 7 than the 'Skins have had the last few years....pressure from that "up front" group could make their DB's look very good this coming year..

Depends on what Williams decides to do. His primary background is an aggressive 4-3 with some 46 concepts, but he's drifted toward a read-and-react scheme in recent years and used a lot of Tampa-2 over the past season and a half. MLB should hold as much value as any other MLB -- talent and opportunity driven. OLBs are dependent on the percentage of variations he uses. More 46 and blitz packages will mean the OLB is a better target in big play leagues. More Tampa-2 would give the WLB better value obviously. His gameplans may depend most on what kind of pass rush he can coax out of the current front four or acquire this offseason.Del Rio is more of a read-and-react guy with some zone stuff, so my guess would be that you'll see the more recent Gregg Williams scheme melding with the current Jags scheme. Hopefully we'll get some information in his opening pressers and then the draft and minicamps.

Don't forget that Takeo Spikes had a monster season at OLB for Williams in Buffalo, even in the read/react version of his defense.

:rolleyes:Still, he never topped 70 solos in a 16 game season in that scheme. It was all big play driven and before Williams became interested in the Tampa-2.

Peterson confirmed as starting MLB for Jags in '08. Smith is entrenched as a starting OLB, while Durant and Ingram will battle for the other OLB spot. NOTE: If Durant wins the battle, Smith may be moved to SLB. If Ingram wins the battle, Smith will most likely start at WLB.

• It’s expected Mike Peterson will step back into his starting middle linebacker’s job, following a late-season wrist injury that caused him to miss the playoffs. Justin Durant stepped in as a rookie and played at a high level, which means the Jaguars have four linebackers and only three positions. “I think it’s safe to say Mike remains a starter. Justin Durant is a good football player. Clint Ingram is a good football player. And Daryl Smith is an outstanding football player,” Del Rio said.

My money's on Durant. If they were pleased with Ingram's long term upside potential and pa-zaz, they wouldn't have gone after Durant.Didn't the Jags trade up to get that draft spot, the spot they drafted Durant in? It was the #48 pick; Harris, David falling at the #47 pick.

Added By Edit:

I went back and researched it. NYJ's traded up to get Harris at the #47 pick, right ahead of JAC at the #48 pick.

MP is going to have to reduce his salary... Del Rio doesn't sign the checks and 4+ Mil is a ton of money for a guy who has been IRd 2 yrs in a row; especially when theres a monster in Durrant ready to play.

Some bean counter will get to management and ask "why pay this guy 4 mil when the kid making 600k does the same job?"

If they Keep MP... my gut tells me the Da Smith is the odd man waiting for the injury.

A Jaguars insider told us not to be surprised if Jacksonville tinkers with some 3-4 defensive alignments next season. Despite the fact that the backgrounds of coach Jack Del Rio and new coordinator Gregg Williams are primarily rooted in the 4-3, personnel groupings make the experimentation an enticing option. The Jags lack prototypical speed at defensive end, but their starters have enough bulk to hold up as bookends in three-man fronts. Furthermore, they feel they have the cast of linebackers necessary to dabble in the scheme. That being said, the 4-3 will remain their base defense.
