Jags QB Leftwich to have surgery Tuesday (1 Viewer)

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -Jaguars quarterback Byron Leftwich will have surgery Tuesday on his injured left ankle, possibly ending his season.

Leftwich missed three games before visiting renowned orthopedist Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., this week. He was told to rest the ankle, then return for a re-evaluation.

The Jaguars released a statement Saturday that said Leftwich has opted for surgery. But the team also said he still might return this season.

``We look forward to getting Byron back on the field, and this is the first step in that process,'' coach Jack Del Rio said. ``We will have a better idea of the length of his recovery time after the surgery. I know that Byron will work diligently to get back and rejoin his teammates as soon as possible.''

The Jags, who host the New York Giants on Monday night, said Leftwich's status will be updated following surgery.

He was ruled out against the Giants.

Defensive tackles Marcus Stroud and John Henderson remained questionable on the injury report, but both players missed practice Saturday.

Stroud has missed five games since injuring his ankle Oct. 1 against Washington. Henderson, who leads AFC defensive tackles in Pro Bowl voting, has been slowed for two weeks by a hamstring injury.

My instinct is to say he won't be relevant for FF purposes this year. Even if he comes back in say, week 16, would you start him? I sure wouldn't.

Something's kinda fishy here..........if he went to Dr. Andrews this past week........why wait until TUESDAY to have the surgery?

no link, but i thought he was advised by andrews (earlier article i saw on blogger) to re-evaluate the ankle in one week (last week)...

he may want to shut it down, since he no longer seems to be in their future (or present), but this decision is consistent with what jags medical staff reportedly advised him to do... i think realizing it could end his season...

The original info from Andrews was for him to wait 7-10 days of rest and see if the ankle felt better. Since Leftwich is still in denial about the fact Del Rio doesn't want him to start any more, he announced this to the public. He probably went to Del Rio and told him the "good" news and was promptly told "You don't get it, do you? You're done. Garrard's the starter." I'm guessing mixed in with Andrews' news of rest making it possible for him to return was the message "...but it's still messed up and will cause problems until it's cleaned out." Once Leftwich heard that the "possible recovery with rest" didn't mean anything to the team or his probability of starting this year, he decided to get the surgery over with, so he has more time to recover. Just my :twocents:

Leftwhich came back last year and played horrible in a playoff game. The Jags will probably put him on ice for the rest of the year.

Is there any talk of him being placed on the official IR?
first sentence
I guess we'll know if they hope he is back by the end of reg season or if IR is thebetter move in the next few days (though I would prefer he be put on IR like now)
Me too. It would suck to drop him and have one of the other guys pick him up and use him to beat me in week 16. I'll probably wait about another week, but it doesn't look good. Garrard is playing good enough. The Jags are winning. No need to bring Byron back.

Del Rio: Leftwich may go on IR Byron Leftwich, QB JACNews: Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said Wednesday that QB Byron Leftwich (ankle) might be placed on Injured Reserve in the near future. Leftwich had ankle surgery on Tuesday in Birmingham, Ala. "I don't think we'll get (Leftwich) back for the regular season," Del Rio said. Del Rio is comfortable with David Garrard as his starter going forward but refused to speculate whether or not Garrard would be the starter in 2007.
I hope near future means today or something.

List the players that came back from this surgery in 3 weeks5 out of 6 odds you'd be glad he started against your team

Yeah, I didn't wait. I'll take my chances, but I like my odds.

Drop him. Yesterday, Del Rio stated this when talking about Garrard- "He's going to be our quarterback for the remainder of the season,".Jax Times-Union

Thanks. See post above yours. I decided not to wait anymore.

:blackdot: bump...in case anybody hears that Leftwich gets put on IR.
I don't see any reason to consider Leftwich a fantasy option this season. Even if he recovers the team seems committed to Garrard for the rest of this season at the least.
Agree...but I have him in a Dynasty league (also have Garrard) so I'd like to be able to IR Leftwich, pick up another player off waivers and not have to worry about Leftwich making a miracle come back and playing in week 15 or 16 when I'm still in the playoffs.

Would they place him on IR prior to the game to open up a roster spot or will we have to wait until at least next week?

They gonna IR this guy or what?
Still nothing for sure. The official story is that they are going to look at the ankle in a week or so and decide if there's a chance of him coming back. But the story with the injury has changed constantly since the issue first came up so there's no telling what will happen.

The Jags are 1-2 in the last 3 weeks, losing to lowly Houston and Buffalo. All the while Garrard has a QB rating of 75.8, and a throwing percentage of 56.8 in the last 3 games and has only thrown 2 TDs to 4 INTs.

so they are actually considering doing the exact same thing as they did last season??

 Dont the Jags need some roster space?

NFL Network's Adam Shefter reports that the Jaguars will look to trade Byron Leftwich, but any interested team will have to work out a contract extension.Leftwich has one year left on his deal and any interested team will want a longer commitment. Washington looks like the obvious favorites, but Houston, Minnesota, Cleveland, and Oakland all have a need.
