Jahvid Best going Fwd: cleared for physical activity (1 Viewer)

Positive sign for Jahvid and those who are not just concerned w/value this year

While Jahvid Best may not be able to help Detroit again this season afterthe Lions placed him on injured reserve, the second-year running back was medically cleared for physical activity on Thursday.

Best suffered a concussion in a Week 6 loss to San Francisco and had been sidelined for practices and games since then. Last week, the Lions announced they put him on IR, ending his season.

Still, it's a step in the right direction for the 22-year-old, who also suffered a concussion during the preseason.

"It's just good to be doing something again," Best said. "For a while I was just flying around seeing a bunch of specialists and everything so it's just good to get back around the guys and get back into another schedule."

The 5-foot-10, 200-pounder's junior season at Cal ended early after he suffered two concussions in consecutive weeks. Best decided to forego his senior year of college and enter the 2010 NFL draft, in which Detroit selected him with its second pick in the first round (30th overall).

Not worth the hassle. He is clearly more susceptible to concussions than most players and will be out again with one when he returns to play. Guaranteed.

Not sure he's worth selling, as I don't think you'd get much. But, i'd sell him for anything of potential value.

I imagine he'll be back, but you have to figure he's destined for RBBC, whether it is with Leshoure, Kevin Smith, Morris or some combination thereof.

Can't imagine team brass willing to give him 20+ touches a game with the concussion history.

I could see them using him (and him being very productive) in a Darren Sproles-like role.

Totally agree..I see an 8-10 touch third down back here on in. Even that is a risk. With LaShoure coming back and Kevin Smith in the mix it will be a RBBC in Detroit and that is not a bad mix of RBs.

If the lions are smart they'll use Best like NO uses Sproles. Look at Sproles value in PPR. Best could be a great value in that format next year.

Anwar Richardson of MLive.com writes that “many within the (Lions’) organization” that RB Jahvid Best may never play in the NFL again. Best has a very serious history of concussions and wound up missing a good portion of the 2011 season after suffering another one. Detroit chose to address their running back depth during last season’s draft by taking Mikel Leshoure out of Illinois but he was unfortunately lost for the season after tearing his Achilles tendon. So far, the Lions have already met with a number of running back prospects during the Senior Bowl so there’s a good chance that they could be looking to take another one in this years draft as well. Detroit reportedly met with Boise State’s Doug Martin, Ohio State’s Dan Herron, and Washington’s Chris Polk earlier in the week.<br style="font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: -webkit-left; background-color: rgb(245, 245, 255); ">

I dumped him at first chance for some value. Just the risk he might not be able to play was enough for me.

wouldn't touch him with a 10 ft poll. i hope he gets out of the league before he causes himself any (more?) long-term damage.

He was part of a multi-player/pick trade, but if you broke it down, it was Best for a mid 1st (ended up 1.04).

Even when we drafted Best I was worried. He's too brittle. Like Stafford, if he could just stay healthy for a season, he could put up some very nice

numbers. If LeShoure stays healthy next season, the two of them should be a great 1-2 punch. We had absolutely no run game whatsoever in 2011, and

we really need more balance.

Was listening to The Ticket today ands there are many conplicting reports as to weather Best will ever play again. It is not looking good for Best or Lion fans.

It is looking like both Best and LaShoure will be both wasted high picks.

Why is LeShoure a wsted high pick?

Time will tell but the track record for achilles injuries is not good.
If I had to pick one to put on my roster right now it would be Best over Leshoure.Let's be realistic. Best is a very young man who has been cleared to resume playing. So, from his perspective, he has a professional medical opinion saying its ok. Some people might have the same types of concerns about a guy like Sidney Crosby, but does any unbiased observer standing on the outside looking in think Crosby would hang them up and never play again? To me, it doesn't seem likely and I can't find much of a reason for Best to given that he has been cleared.LeShoure, on the other hand, has an injury that is brutal to an athlete, especially a RB. Its the type of injury that can be automatically dibilitative. I can defintiely see that LeShoure has more "appeal" to him because he was the shiny new car that no one ever saw come out of the garage; there is still a lot of optimism surrounding him. And, it IS likely that he will defnitely play again (we just don't know if he will be very capable at all or not). But at the end of the day, the other option is Best, who HAS been cleared to continue his career and I have seen that he can be very effective in fantasy when he plays. SO, I would take him because I know that, just like Stafford, you've got a young kid who has been snake bitten both of his first two years, but when and if he can play a full season or close to it (most RBs miss time here or there anymore), that he absolutely can be a top 10 RB. I've read quite a few people say that they can't imagine that Best can be anything more than a bit role player now but, in that offense, I don't see why not. I don't think anyone ever truly thought of Best being a 25 carry guy but that is not the same thing as playing the majority of snaps in a game. So, again, in that offense, I don't know why he can't be the Sproles. With his ability, he certainly could make a good fantasy day in that role. And there really is no reason for people to mention "only allowing him to carry the ball" X amount of times or whatnot because there really is no way of knowing whether a player may play 40 snaps and not have a concussion or whether they are more likely to have one on the 10th play, the 34th play, or what. You just don't know so the only decision here is to either let them play or not.

I think Best could be a great value for next season as long as he is drafted as a #2 RB. The problem is that he is one helmet-to-helmet hit away from his career ending. So I would view him as a year-to-year option in dynasty leagues and would not sign him beyond 1 year in salary leagues. If he can get a consistent 15 carries per game I see him as a viable #2 RB because he can score from anywhere. All that said, if he get's another concussion it's probably over. So just don't overpay and expect him to go down at anytime.

Next years Lions could look like...Best = Sproles roleSmith = P Thomas roleLeshoure = Ingram role
With 3 backs sharing a lite load in a pass heavy offense I could see that actually working for the Lions. With so few touches each they may even stay healthy. That said, "fantasy-wise" I might not bite on any of them.

Under that scenario I would bite as my 3rd RB. That way you are limiting the damage.

No link but local radio just today at lunch was saying that "sources inside the lions" have their concerns about Best ever playing again. proceed with caution.

I don't know how that could be possible, considering someone in the SP kept pointing to research articles that one concussion doesn't lead to another concussion
Local radio show on morning drive with some Cal fans/grads mentioned that Best is considering retirement as news, though I cannot find a single mention of this anywhere on the interwebs. Color me skeptical as he's a couple of weeks away from stating that he had every intention of playing in 2012.

I hope Best does what is right for him and doesn't regret it. Whatever that is. Sometimes you need to just walk away. He's just s kid.

Just bumping.

Some new "news" restated today saying best expects to be ready to play and has been symptom-free since January.

Anyone changing their opinions now? Outlook for Best?

The question becomes what happens next year if/when he gets a concussion next year? Does the NFL let the Lions and Best decide his future going forward or do they step in at some point and shut him down based on his history?

I doubt the NFL will step in, as the Lions have clearly been conservative in handling the situation to this point.

I don't disagree. It just think its an interesting (but sad) situation. I'm curious to see how it gets handled if he's unfortunate enought to get another concussion or two over the next year.

Yeah, given the cautious nature the team has taken with him, I can't see the NFL taking a stand and trying to fight it if it happened again and Best was cleared by medical doctors, etc. It just is kind of what it is.Whats funny in all this is, for all we know, Best could come back next year and be completely healthy and put up great FF numbers. But this situation will always lurk on him. he will always be mentioned with a tagline like "he's one hit away from..." So, much like Fred Taylor, he will always carry this stigma where people will have to be burned by him multiple times before they ever reverse their take on him. So, one way or another, he may end up being one of the most over/undervalued players for several years as people will likely, one way or the other, draft him in the wrong spot.

I think he's pretty much toast. He's concussion prone and that is never a good thing.

I've been trying to trade him away in the one league where I own him and I can't even get a bag of ABC peanuts for him.

:kicksrock:

Cleared to work out.
Kinda took a really long time just to be cleared to work out, no? I mean we're talking about half a year.
Considering his concussion history, going back to college, I'm not surprised. Wouldn't be surprised if he never played another game either.
I think he will play again but if he gets another concussion I think that's got to be it. He's got the money so I don't think he should keep risking his long-term health but he seem intent on continuing to play.
