Jahvid Best said he plans on playing through the sprained right big toe he suffered last week.

Jahvid Best (toe) practiced Friday and is expected to start. Schwartz said running back Kevin Smith "is in the mix". It will be the first time he's been active since tearing his ACL last December.

if Kevin Smith is in the "mix" how does that impact Best? Coach gonna rest Best a bit so the injury doesn't get worse?
If he wanted to rest Best he wouldnt even play him....

Jahvid Best-RB- Lions Oct. 1 - 5:43 pm et Jahvid Best (toe, questionable) was limited in his return to Lions practice on Friday. However, reports out of Detroit indicate that Best's participation in the workout was extensive, and coach Jim Schwartz expressed confidence Friday that Best is ready to play. He should be in fantasy lineups heading to Sunday.
What exactly does "extensive" mean in the above quote?

proably something like he didn't do all the drills (the limited part) but the ones he did he did at full speed etc?

my Best Guess :2cents:

NFL Network dude said he was working on the field with no noticeable limp!
In all fairness, noone knows the severity to which he is injured.... it may not hurt his abilities at all.... may destroy him... may flare up in 3 games or 3 plays.Im going to have to risk playing him... and hope for the best. I honestly cant see the lions putting him out there unless they were certain he was good to go. why risk a career (basically) when youre already out and done

FWIW- in last week's MNF game the dumpoff to Forte/Taylor was there all game long for Cutler, although he usually hung out in the pocket as long as possible and preferred to go down field instead. Sorry this is not injury related, but I think Best could still catch a handful of balls even if he isn't too effective rushing, and is a decent PPR start this week.

Stephania Bell very negative. Says his foot feels fine now because he hasn't tested it too much, but that this sort of injury flares up early in the game. She says don't start him.

Thanks for getting back to injury news instead of all these other guys in here posting about their own decisions or about who will get more carries - which the moderators have asked us repeatedly not to do in these sunday news injury threads. My question is whether any legitimate news source has said this is the type of injury that in fact can flare up early in the game and take the player out of the game?

But it was tested on hard cuts friday. Surely he would have felt it then, Saturday or this morning.

its a turf toe. everyone knows its the type of injury that can in fact flare up early in the game and take the player out of the game. if this response sounds rude i apologize it was just meant to be informative but i dont know how to politely phrase it.

The fact that I asked the question shows that everyone doesn't in fact know. Furthermore, because some sources have characterized the issue as being a matter of pain tolerance, I am uncertain how to resolve some conflicting reports I've read about the impact of his injury for today's game.

may not be relevant, but IMO turf toe more painful on artificial turf than grass fields?

Was definitely true on old school turf. I don't get the impression that there's much of a difference on the modern turf that is softer and gives more like grass.

Here's my take- Bell's comments were general in nature. She discussed a "grade 2 turf toe", and how it can adversely affect RBs. She did not discuss Best's practices this week in any specifics. Choke's comments about how he tested it are a good point. On the other hand, as a comparison, Bell was very specific in discussing Stephen Jackson and how his injury would affect him. So take that for what you will, but it makes me a little more optimistic about Best.
