Jake Long signs in St Louis 4/$36m (1 Viewer)

Maybe after seeing guys like Jake Long and Joe Thomas make the pro bowl as rooks the Lions will maybe just once take a LT in the first round. This year they can pick anybody except a WR or QB and make 90% of the fans happy.

Jake let up 2.5 sacks all year long and opened some big holes for Ronnie and Ricky in the running game. His steady play at LT also allowed Vernon Carey to make the move back to RT which solidified the entire line as the Dolphins only allowed 25 sacks as a team. A very deserving selection imo.

Jake has now moved on after going to the Pro Bowl 4 times in 5 seasons as a Miami Dolphin. The team selected him #1 overall in 2008 and he played like an All Pro when he 1st started. I expect him to bounce back and I wish the guy nothing but the best, he played his guts out down here for Miami and I think fans are going to see a difference at LT this year, unfortunately no for the better. I also expect Long to make an immediate impact for the Rams and become a huge signing for Jeff Fisher.

This won't help the Tannehill to Wallace combo.
Eh, I think Long is a little overrated. Pro Bowls don't mean anything; only rewards those players with a higher profile.#1 most overrated player on MIA according to PFF1. Jake Long, Offensive TackleNot exactly the kind of season you want to have in a contract year. Long battled injury and looked a long way off the elite tackle who had graced the league in his first three campaigns as a Dolphin. Missing time didn’t help, but the problems started a long way before that with Long finishing only 21st in our Pass Blocking Efficiency metric. Coupled with a negative run blocking grade, Long was never going to live up to the big cap hit.2012 Cap Hit: $12.8m2012 Performance Based Value: $1.2mValue Differential: -$11.6m

St. Louis getting OLT Jake Long from Miami is a HUGE signing for a couple of reasons.1. Rams FINALLY address their O-Line and this obviously is a big help to QB Sam Bradford who has taken a beating the last couple of years.2. Miami now is in the market for a starting OLT and quite frankly probably were or else they would have re-upped Jake in the first place. This opens the doors for them in the draft or a trade or possibly a trade-up in the draft since the top three OLTs will be gone when they select at pick 12 in the first round.3. I don't think it is a coincidence that Kansas City has made it publically known that OLT Brandon Albert is available for trade hours after OLT Jake Long signed by the Rams.4. Even with the signing of OLT Jake Long the Rams will like take an OLT and possibly, very possibly, with one of their two-first round draft picks. I think they will be in prime position to land one of the stud OGs, either Chance or Cooper, with their first-first round pick and it wouldn't shock me if they went after a young OLT prospect with that second-first round pick. This is a HUGE signing due to the impact it could make on the draft and possible trades and for the top pick which now obviosly will be an OLT if KC trades Albert and still looks like an OLT even if they don't since KC didn't extend Albert but only franchised him to a one year deal. Still highly likely they take an OLT with the top pick.Jake Long has injuries, lots and lots of injuries. Triceps and biceps injuries slowed Long the past two seasons, costing him six games. He also has had shoulder and knee issues over his career. The Phins would NEVER have let him hit free agency if he were completely healthy or if they felt he was a viable long-term fix at OLT. I'm sure St. Louis knows he's more of a stop-gap measure so I think one of the second-tier OLTs are still on the menu with that second-first round draft pick they hold. They can allow a rookie to develop, probably on the right side and act as insurance if Long goes down.HUGE signing, not just on the surface of a beat up but talented OLT going to a team who really needs an OLT but in how it impacts the draft from possibly the first pick with KC to Miami's selection or teams like Miami still in need of an OLT who might either trade for Albert or move-up in the draft to land one of the top-three OLTs. Right now it appears St. Louis has taken themselves out of contention for trading-up but I bet other teams are in the mix and KC has put Albert on the table so this signing has made the OLT picture a bit clearer heading towards the draft.

Eh, I think Long is a little overrated. Pro Bowls don't mean anything; only rewards those players with a higher profile.#1 most overrated player on MIA according to PFF

1. Jake Long, Offensive Tackle

Not exactly the kind of season you want to have in a contract year. Long battled injury and looked a long way off the elite tackle who had graced the league in his first three campaigns as a Dolphin. Missing time didn’t help, but the problems started a long way before that with Long finishing only 21st in our Pass Blocking Efficiency metric. Coupled with a negative run blocking grade, Long was never going to live up to the big cap hit.

2012 Cap Hit: $12.8m

2012 Performance Based Value: $1.2m

Value Differential: -$11.6m
Oh, sorry, I thought it was clear I was talking about 2013.Kind of kidding, but if we're being honest with ourselves, one bad season does not define a career. If he's healthy next year, he'll help out StL and he would've helped out Tannehill. If he's injured again, then sure, they overpaid for him and Miami gambled well. But I made my statement assuming he's healthy.

NFC West improving again. Don't forget the Rams were 4-1-1 in the division last year. Should be fun to watch these teams battle it out next season.

1. Rams FINALLY address their O-Line and this obviously is a big help to QB Sam Bradford who has taken a beating the last couple of years.
Long and Saffold are a nice pair of tackles, should be a huge help to Bradford.

Long is a huge signing for the Rams. Plus moving Saffold to RT improves 2 spots. Also, don't underestimate the TE Cook signing. He is a freak and could be Bradford's main target like Gresham was at OU. A 6'5 248 TE / WR who runs a 4.49 is crazy. The Rams will use him out of the slot and D's will have to put a LB or safety on him. Good luck with that. Don't forget WR's Givens and Quick too. Givens is a burner and 6'3 220 lb Quick has all the tools to be really good. And they also have TE Kendricks who is very underrated. Excellent blocker and has good size and speed. I love what Fisher is doing.

all that Miami did this off-season and they couldnt keep the guy they needed the most
Makes you wonder about Long, doesn't it? I haven't watched him play enough to judge his performance, but it's really interesting to see a rebuilding team with loads of free money and space just let their top pick and projected franchise tackle just walk. It's not like their employing some sort of "moneyball" management either(judging by the Wallace deal).

He looked fine against the Rams. His triceps injury was a fluke. When healthy, he's still a beast. And he's only 27. Just entering his prime. Change of scenery plus going to the best OL coach in the game will help.

Sour grapes by Miami homers. This just in, injuries heal. His will and he will be just fine.

I didn't smartass. But I'm pretty sure the people giving him and the Rams medical advice did. He passed the physical with ease according to the beat reporter here. And the fact that Miami offered him a sizeable contract too, tells me that they had guys who went to medical school as well take a look at him and deemed him healthy. Now, how about offering something substantive to the thread or refrain from posting. Everyone thanks you in advance.

You said he'd be just fine and I wanted to know what inside information you had that supports that conclusion. He's injury prone and has been on the decline for 2 years. Ankle, back, and tricep injuries don't just disappear with a "fresh" start. I'd be willing to wager, if you are so inclined, that he doesn't start every game for the Rams next year. Put your money where your mouth is.

To bet a guy on an anonymous message board? Is that what does it for you? Make you feel like a man? I don't need a bet that likely won't get paid to prove my point. As for inside information. Seems you think you have some. Were you there when he got the physical? If the doctors thought he was injury prone, do you think the Rams (and your Phins) would've offered him the contract? Diss the guy who just dissed your team. Have fun with that. Shouldn't you be facebook stalking an ex-girlfriend right about now?

I wish jake well, but I think the dolphins were smart here. Long is the last unfortunate casualty of the poor rookie wage scale before the new CBA. He got paid a kings ransom and did not want a pay cut, so the dolphins were between a rock and a hard place in terms of getting him back at the right number vs Jake's idea of being respected. Add to that he finished the last 2 seasons on IR and that Johnathan Martin Played well (not great, but well) on the left side last year after jake got hurt and there you go. The final numbers were very close between the two teams, but Jake felt he was more "wanted" in St. Louis (although his wife wanted to stay in Miami)

He is on the decline, but a change in scenery may help. Miami can look to RT (Winston, Volmer) or LT (and move Martin back) and still have flexibility in the draft in terms of their O line.

Finally, Miami was the team who didn't bite on Cassel last year when everyone was clamoring for them to grab him. I think that they have a plan, and while I no longer trust them enough to renew season tickets anymore, I can see a method to what they are trying to accomplish.

If this is your idea of honor, you need to get out more.Barring a freak injury like a broken leg (not related to any previous injury or something that can be predicted based on injury history) I say he will start every game this regular season. If he doesn't, feel free to bump away and mock this statement. Btw, you might want to do a google search about the tweet he got from a vet on the rams about the type of coach Fisher is and how he handles his players and practice.
