Jamaal Charles value? (1 Viewer)

The biggest concern I have for Charles is if he can take the punishment running between the tackles. At Texas, he ran a lot around the end or had huge holes up the middle. He's got world class speed, I'm just not sure that he is a 20 touch per game back. I always saw him as a 3rd down back in the NFL, while watching him in college. Maybe we'll find out if he can handle running between the tackles. He will have quite a challenge behind that O-Line in KC.
I agree with you but Tiki was a third down back first as well. We shall see this weekend! Not many Tiki's out there but I wish this kid luck. Kolby may get a shot as well.GL all!

Thought I'd give this a bump.

6-36

3-20

2pt conversion

All seems like good numbers, but why did he play so little, KC homers? What did the coasch say about his playing time.

From Haley's press conference - not really much to go on, although it sounds like Haley wants Smith to carry the load more so than Charles.
Q: What were your thoughts on the running game with the new backs?HALEY: “I think average-wise they were both pretty good and I feel like that’s what they’ll be. We need to hand the ball off more and I think we would have gotten more out of them. I’m encouraged by those guys, I really am. I think for Kolby [smith]for coming off a long road back we knew there was going to be rust – and we tried to rough him up a little on Thursday to get him game-ready – but I think he got his feet wet, got some carries and got a couple of catches. But to expect him to put the team on his shoulders would be unreasonable. I thought Jamaal [Charles] did a pretty good job, did a good job on blitz protection as did 29 [savage], so I think as a group they played hard and had some juice.”Q: You were throwing a lot and didn’t use the running game as much. Was that why?HALEY: “No, it was all predicated defensively. A lot of run looks, there was a lot of pressure coming. They were bringing safeties off both edges – run blitzes we call them. It was all predicated by the defense.”
Maybe we'll get a bit more on today's press conference formally announcing the release of LJ.

It certainly seemed strange that Charles had a decent opening series and then had limited touches after that.

sell while he still may have a little value.
Our trade deadline has passed. I was hoping to use him as a spot starter/flex player type with RB2 upside, but the carry distribution has me a little :coffee: . A guy's averaging 6/ypc with a few catches mixed in and gets benched is a bit strange.

Considering the Chiefs' situation in the second half of the game, I'd say Charles got a fair amount of touches. He was clearly the favored back in the second half.

Like I posted (I believe in this thread) that I find the whole Charles situation puzzling. Why did they run with LJ all year, even though he was terrible (although I don't think it was really his fault) when they are clearly building for the future and LJ won't be a part of that? Why deactivate Charles a few weeks back? Why does nearly every comment by Haley about Charles seem to have some backhanded comment like "Jamal had a good practice today, he's seems to be finally getting it.." or things to that effect. I don't know if it's a personality thing, Charles attitude, a skillset thing or whatever but the only reason he's using Charles is because he has to and I think if he gets different alternatives (K. Smith/whoever) he'll use them. The whole thing is a wierd situation and why I thought the hype around Charles was too high and why I'd deal him ASAP if I could package him to someone who thought he had value.....

latest news on the KC RB's

Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star, reports the Kansas City Chiefs are likely to use a running-back-by-committee with free-agent RB Larry Johnson (Chiefs) gone. The committee will include RBs Kolby Smith, Jamaal Charles and Dantrell Savage. Charles started and played more snaps in Week 9, but Smith could eventually take more of the workload. The team still appears hesitant to give the ball to Charles in running formations.

Our view (FBG): Jamaal Charles is better and more explosive in space, but Kolby Smith is a better runner between the tackles and at the goalline. With the Chiefs playing in catch up mode frequently, it could mean more of Jamaal Charles because of his ability as a receiver out of the backfield.

tough call...i've got Jamaal Charles on my bench, but looking at what CJ did to JAX...it's tempting to start Charles this week. I can start 3 RBs...I've got these 3 starting right now: MJD vs KC, Benson vs BAL, and LT vs NYG....but it is tempting to maybe swap out Charles for LT....hmmmmm
CJ ran like that against the Jags because he has talent that few in the league possess. He made those plays himself with his tremendous speed. KC is absolutely horrible and putting Charles in there isn't going to change anything IMO, if that were the case he would've been playing more because LJ wasn't lighting it up. I think you're looking at a stat line of 13-41 and 3-22....
OK...so CJ tore up the Jags all by himself with his speed but JC can't have success against them because he's...what...slow? JC was the fastest player in college football his junior year, having run a 10.1 100m. Basically, there's a bit of a debate ( http://www.broncosforums.com/forums/archiv...php/t-8540.html ) as to which of these guys is faster, with the consensus seeming to be that Jonson is quicker in the 40y (4.2 to 4.3) and Charles is quicker in the 100m (10.1 to10.38), and that Johnson is a bit quicker in pads, probably because he's a bit bigger if I'm not mistaken. The boittom line here, though, is that both of these guys are freaking fast and among the fastest players in the NFL.
One is an all-pro and the other is LJs backup. Charles may be a track star but hasn't displayed it on the football field and his longest run in 90 carries is 30 yards. In 119 carries this year CJ has 8 30+ yard runs. It's apples and oranges.
He's not really a track star in the sense I think most people think of them. He was more of a football player running track. You shoulda seen him run track. Compared to those smooth track guys, he looked all elbows and knees, and he still kicked their arses. If he would have spent time at track working on technique, he coulda really been scary fast. I'm not saying he has CJ's talent, though. I'm just saying he's very talented, and just because he's been #2 on the depth chart behind LJ doesn't diminish that at all, imho.
The other JC thread reminded me of this conversation, so I thought it was worth a bump... :hophead:

...and this...

To me, the cream rises to the top. This year from the start of training camp everyone who watched this team knew they were going to be a total disaster. New coaching staff, GM, trade Gonzo, the whole bit, total complete rebuild...then you have a knucklehead RB in LJ who was suspended last year, wanted to be traded in the offseason, etc. and you have a guy in Charles who is a 2nd year player that was drafted rather high. This was the perfect opportunity for the staff to see what they had in Charles and no one would blame them, it makes too much sense. Instead they've muddled through the season with LJ avgeraging a ridiculously bad 2.7 ypc and getting 85% of the carries (compared to 15% for Charles). Do they look to give the ball to Charles? Nope, in fact they deactivated him for a game and there were questions whether he would be deactivated for other games. Sometimes your stuck behind a guy on the depth chart and there's nothing you can do about it but in this particular case if he had anything to offer I can't understand for the life of me why they wouldn't roll with him. They have absolutely no allegiance to LJ, this coach traded an icon in Gonzo and benched/demoted their best player in Bowe, yet they don't give Charles a sniff....why?I've watched a number of KC games over the past 2 years and there is nothing to me that I've seen that would indicate that this kid is a star in waiting. If that were the case I think the coaching staff want to get him on the field as much as possible as opposed to having to play Charles because their crappy starting RB did another stupid thing to get himself suspended. Even still there's a lot of talk that K. Smith who's coming off the PUP this week and hasn't taken a snap all year could take a lot of the carries. As a waiver pick-up that's fine, take a shot but I would be absolutely shocked if Charles amounted to anything.
OK... :hophead: ...we'll see how it all shakes out.
