Schedules are overrated. Besides, even in tough matchups, he could still get a goal line look or two.

Did you know that he averaged over 100 total yards a game from Week 12 on last season?
Well... ok, but that doesnt really tell the whole story. Here's his game splits:Week 12 Cinci: 23att 113y 1td, 5rec 36yWeek 13 Houston: 8 att 17y, 3rec 23yWeek 14: active but didnt play, speculated to be in Billicks doghouseWeek 15 GB: 22 att 105y 1td, 2rec 9yWeek 16 MIN: 24att 74y, 2rec 11yWeek 17 Cle: 20att 89y, 3rec 29yHis overall yards per carry in that run was 4.10, about the league average. And those are some of the worst defense in the league. Look how he wore down as it went along. His career average is 4.4 y/c. Lewis is a compiler, he needs ~25 touches a game to have an impact and even then its no guarantee. I just dont think he can stay healthy under that work load, and for that matter i dont think he will be effective with that workload even if he can stay healthy. Now obviously this is a question of value considering he is a starter and how late he will be drafted, he's not expected to put up top notch numbers. But the problem i have is that the upside of lewis is a combined 100 and a touch. Thats not bad, but considering the risk i'd like to see a higher upside. Reggie Bush is being drafted about that spot. Now i'd rather roll the dice that McAllister cant get/stay healthy than to bet Lewis can, particularly when the 'pay out' for Bush is way higher. For that matter the guys like Droughns, Dunn, and Taylor that are being drafted in that ballpark have about the same upside, but less injury risk. Lewis may have some value, but I dont think he has more value than his peers in the ADP, so he wont make my rosters in all likelihood.

Great post, but Lewis was clearly not 100% last year. He looks much sharper this season (as she should because he wasn't trying to rehab in the pokey like last offseason) and his supporting cast is upgraded.Right now his ADP is RB 19 and 30 overall, with an average magzine ranking of RB 22 and 35th overall. I'll take him ahead of guys like Droughns, Dunn, Bush, Taylor (obviously) & Dominick Davis all day long.

One thing I don't see mentioned here is Balt's o-line. Has it improved from last year? They were disappointing to say the least.

Lack of a passing threat will do that to you
They were a bad passing team the last x amount of years, but they were a good run blocking team until last year when they stunk. Were they unhealthy last year? Ogden isn't getting any younger...

Good thread. I think Baltimore will produce a pretty good offense this year... not Colts good, but definately a marked improvement in all facets.

My argument against Lewis definately hinges on his health. If he can stand up to the load he will indeed be a great value. Im just very down on his ability to do that. Its becoming sort of a yearly ritual for Jamal to finally be over some given ailment, only to rapidly develop new ones. I compare him to a pitcher with some sort of bad mechanics. He's going to get hurt somewhere in the chain, its just a matter of where. I dont know what Lewis's problem is, but he just cant seem to keep his legs and feet healthy. Its too bad, thats not the kind of thing you can really build up to protect.

he's no kerry wood!seriously though, I'm sort of giving him a free pass for last year. He was in jail for the offseason, not the best training regimen.

You have a better sense for your league than we do. But if you think Lewis or a comparable RB will be there when you make your initial pick then hold onto Smith. It is more likely Smith will be off the board than Lewis IMO so I think you hold onto Smith and try to re-draft Lewis or another decent RB as your RB2. Then you will be all set with two solid RB's and a top 3 WR as the foundation of your team.
That would have been my initial thought too but I don't have a 1st round pick (and with keeping 2 players is really more like the 3rd) and don't pick until the end of the 2nd round. Smith would be taken in the top 3 and Lewis might slip but will definitely be gone by the time I pick. Our league goes RB crazy so keeping Lewis is probably my best choice. I'm trying to trade Smith to get some value but it kills me to trade a WR who touches the ball as much as Smith. Having said that, I'm definitely encouraged by what I saw of Lewis (even though it was only 6 carries).
Who is the other player you are definitely keeping? That may impact who people think you should keep.
I would hold onto Lewis. He looked good in week one, and was not stuck in prison during this past offseason like he was last year. The only downfall is that if McNair gets hurt his value will plummet back to his '05 value since Boller is terrible. Since your league is RB hungry I would take him and then see which WR drops to you when you have your first pick since you will be all set in your backfield. There are certainly a lot more viable WR options at that point than RB's.

I agree as McNair goes....so does Lewis!

From the Balt Sun...

J. Lewis on happier ground with this Ravens offense

In case you might have forgotten, Jamal Lewis was not particularly happy last season, about much of anything. That Jamal Lewis was nowhere to be seen after the Ravens' preseason opener Friday night.

It was one of the abundant encouraging signs about that game against the New York Giants - players grinning, joking, downright gushing about how Steve McNair marched the first-team offense downfield for that touchdown and sent the fans' anticipation toward dizzying heights.

Lewis wasn't gushing - in fact, he came off as very matter-of-fact about having gained 34 yards on his six first-quarter carries before calling it a night - but he did sound like a man who likes what's happening around him and where he fits into it. So much so, in fact, that it's probably just a matter of time before the Jamal of last season is no more, on the field and in front of the cameras and microphones.

Not that we media types won't miss that other Jamal a little; after all, by the middle of last season, he was the Ravens' weekly go-to sound bite and guaranteed quote. Looks like we'll have to feed off something else this season besides his talk of not running as hard as he could, of being misled by the front office, of getting too much work or too little, of having a leash around his neck, of not speaking to Brian Billick.

On the other hand, the Ravens' faithful won't miss the sub-1,000-yard season, the 3.4 yards-per-carry average, or what everyone eventually started describing as his "tiptoeing" with the ball. There wasn't even a hint of that Friday. Billick described Lewis' approach as "physical," and that might be putting it mildly.

Giants coach Tom Coughlin called his defense "soft" afterward, and refused to take it back a day later after watching film. It's been a while since Lewis made an opposing coach call out his own players.

Right now, Lewis has lots of reasons to be happy, with what he sees and what he's doing.

What he sees is offensive balance. What he sees is a legitimate threat from the passing game. What he sees is defenders somewhere other than jammed up at the line waiting to beat on him the way he's been beaten on for six years.

What he sees is what he said he has been promised every season, none more than last season.

"Very much. It's like I told one of the coaches the other day, I like what's going on, I like what we're doing," Lewis said after the game. "The things that we said to each other sometimes as players - 'Why don't we do this, why don't we do that' - we're doing that now. So you can see progress. You can see progress that we've been missing in the last few years, so that's a step in the right direction."

The unfulfilled promise of making the offense more than one-dimensional was one of his pet peeves from last season. Of course, much of the reason it didn't work last year was resolved this year, and that resolution -McNair - also alluded to the possibilities Lewis envisions.

"Our passing game is going to help the running game and vice versa," McNair said. "When you have things like that working, you can do so many more things offensively, especially with Jamal in the backfield. Who do you stop - do you stop the passing game or do you stop the running game? Teams cannot prepare for the both of us."

McNair sounds like a man who wouldn't mind some version of his old running partner, Eddie George, on his side. Lewis wouldn't mind the favor being returned. He's been waiting, and having it now has changed his tune.

"When I first came back here [for this season], I'm like, 'Oh, no, it's the same old stuff again,'" he said. "But after looking at the schemes, looking at the practices, and looking at the way the run game is, I said, 'OK, now I see a difference in the way we're doing things.' That's only positive; guys like it, and guys are going to make it work."

Now, it's not as if all the questions raised last season about Lewis have all evaporated in the giddiness over that one perfect preseason possession. He's still not at full strength because of leg woes, even though you couldn't tell from the purpose with which he ran Friday. It's hard to believe he won't be playing with another big contract in mind, since the one he signed in the offseason is guaranteed for just one year.

Lewis also will have Mike Anderson and Musa Smith stating their case for carries eventually, if the opener was any indication.

Still, the preseason began with the Ravens' lead running back, the horse they've ridden for so long, in a positive frame of mind.

The Ravens will take that, even if it means the media have to take fewer colorful Lewis quotes in return.

Didn't want to start a new thread for this- hope it's not too much of a hijack...

How do you guys see the rest of the BAL RBs working out? Is PJ Daniels worth anything? Who's getting the bulk of the backup work- Anderson or Musa?

Not a homer but it seems to be Musa. He was in pretty early in the 1st preseason game and showed some good quickness. The game tonight should give a further indication though.

I like him some this season, I don't think Mike Anderson translates into a third down back as he seems to have a similar skill set to Jamal. I'd be surprise if Jamal doesn't top 1000 yards and 6-7 touchdowns.
FYI, on a rerlated note, today's Baltimore Sun indicated that the most likely third down back is... Musa Smith, not Mike Anderson.
After enduring two years of rehabilitation - along with two stints on injured reserve - Smith has become the most impressive back at this year's training camp. His strong summer has made him a favorite to become the Ravens' new third-down back.

I know they were very high on Musa when they got him because they liked his speed....he is definately a change of pace from Lewis.
errrr Musa is very much like Jamal. Big brusining back and is slower then Lewis. Taylor was the change of pace back....Musa SMith: Height: 6-0 Weight: 232

Anyone have any thoughts on how all these RB will shake out? I am thinking of targeting Jamal Lewis in an auction tonight. Is there a RB worth handcuffing to him? I was thinking Mike Anderson but I think he is playing FB and Musa seems to be playing well? I am now thinking this may be a no handcuff situation at this point?

I would probably agree.

Yeah, Musa sure was slow on that 43-yard TD run and 36-yard catch yesterday.
He isn't saying Musa is slow...just slower than Jamal. :shrug:Musa is looking really good in preseason. He could be a decent sleeper if Jamal gets injured. I haven't seen too many talking about him, but a couple more preseason games like he's had and that will change. He looks like he's fully recovered from his injury last year.

I'm not sure which is worse, a stint in jail or being sentenced to Kyle Boller. What I do know is that neither is a career enhancer.

Lewis will roll this year.

True, the Ravens were high on Musa when they drafted him. He never stays healthy though, so it's hard to tell what he can do. While Musa had a couple good runs last night, it's still pre-season. Jamal is the one that continues to intrigue me - I hope his stock doesn't rise too much more by next weekend's drafts.

I agree, I can smell a comeback for Jamal this year. He is hitting the hole quickly, with a speed that wasn't seen last year. McNair is looking sharp, defenses will have to respect the passing game and that should mean great things for Jamal.

Jamal Lewis 2006 = Curtis Martin 2004.

He's an end of his prime RB, with past success, who is going to unexpectedly go out with one last hurrah for his career before he begins his fade.

Right now his ADP is RB 19 and 30 overall, with an average magzine ranking of RB 22 and 35th overall. I'll take him ahead of guys like Droughns, Dunn, Bush, Taylor (obviously) & Dominick Davis all day long.
In a keeper league woudl you still draft Jamal ahead of Bush? I'll likely be facing this decision next weekend.

Well, his line from last night should help. 9 for 27 does NOT look good on the boxscore. He did have one run of 7 yards erased bby a holding penalty and another time he lost 3 yards in the backfield. even getting the 7 yards and the -3 erased he'd be 9 for 37, just over 4 yards a carry. I think for those who didn't see the game, they will look at that 3.0 ypc and remember last year all too well. Plus, I duobt Jamal will really wow in the preseason as he needs a lot of touches to really get going.

I was talking redraft. Bush would be ahead in dynasty, way ahead in dynasty PPR formats.

I think after tonight when we get to see how Deuce looks, the answer could be a bit clearer.

I really like Lewis this year for two reasons: he actually had an offseason to train (rather than be in jail) for the upcoming season and the Ravens should have a much better passing attack this year.

I don't know if any of you guys read Bill Simmons, but I remember in one of his mailbags last year a mailer said that he was a prison guard and would aviod Lewis at all costs in his fantasy draft because of what jail would do to his offseason training routine. Jail food is terrible and its really hard to get into football shape when you don't have the proper fuel. Also, I am sure Lewis was used to training with a trainer and on specialized equiptment and he couldn't do that in jail.

I think that Steve McNair will make a huge difference for Jamal Lewis this year because he will keep defenses honest. Last year with Wright (I think he was the guy who played when Boller got injured) and Boller there was no serious passing threat and teams would load up the box to stop Lewis. I think that this year they won't be able to do that and Lewis should have a lot more room this year.

@ 27 he's done?
Yes, Lewis suffers from a sever growth mutation in which his body matures and an extremely high rate of speed. In the 5th greade he was in reality a fully mature 16 year physically. It only makes sense that his body at 26 is really the body of a 45 year old.

ok, now that makes sense. I stand corrected, apparently he's done.....
