James Jones Passes Driver on the depth chart? (1 Viewer)

According to Pro Football Focus, Donald Driver has played just 42.2 percent of the Packers offensive snaps since playing nearly 70 percent in the season opener. That number has dropped to 36.4 over the past two weeks while James Jones has played in nearly 50 percent of the offensive snaps. Driver is clearly Green Bay's least effective receiver right now, and it seems the Packers coaching staff has already begun a changing of the guard. Now the No. 3 receiver, Jones is worthy of a roster spot in 12-team leagues coming off a 140-yard performance. Driver can be dropped even in deep leagues. Oct 11 - 2:24 PMSource: Pro Football Focus

Donald Driver insists he's "fine" with his declining role in the Packers offense.Coach Mike McCarthy boiled over when asked about it this week, likely in an effort to stand up for a respected veteran. "I think if I'm fine with it, then everybody else has to be fine with it," added Driver. "I'm not walking around here with my head down." We suspect Driver will continue to play closer to one-third of the snaps with James Jones' playing time increasing. Oct 13 - 1:34 PMSource: Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel

After playing on just 38 pass plays in the first three games, James Jones has played on 50 passing plays in the last two games.Jones has muscled his way back into the rotation, playing often in three-wide sets. Still, his week-to-week production is going to be choppy with all the mouths to feed in Green Bay. "We feel like we've got a number of guys that can play in our three-receiver offense and we want to do a good job divvying up the snaps so to speak," said offensive coordinator Joe Philbin. Don't completely disregard Randall Cobb in this discussion. He's raw but his hands are much more consistent than Jones' and he brings the same level of athleticism. They've slowly been initiating him into the offense too. He and Jones were both in during wide stretches of the 2nd half last game, over Driver and Nelson. Even Jennings, to a degree, though I'm sure that was more due to the groin. However, it doesn't shock me that McCarthy wants all the WR 1-5 to get significant, meaningful time with Rodgers over the course of the season. It'll make the offense that much stronger come playoff time. All of them are wild cards week to week after Jennings and Finley.

I'm also thinking Randall Cobb is worth rostering. Driver is slowing down. James Jones has usually been an underachiever with questionable hands. Cobb could earn a nice role in the offense as the season progresses.

I do think Jordy Nelson is every-week-start-worthy though. He's been great in 3 of 5 weeks thus far. That makes him at least a nice WR3 in 12 team leagues, maybe even a decent WR2.

His playing time has been sacrificed to get Jones and Cobb on the field. It's part of the reason for at least one of those two bad weeks. Trend it's not exactly, but something to watch out for if you own him. Jennings and Finley owners need not fear this issue at all. Cobb and Jones both bring a lil more explosion to the table than Nelson so it's no surprise that McCarthy is trying to keep both involved and developing. What surprised me the most was that Jordy was on the pine during the second half of the Falcons game when the game was still close. That's some serious faith McCarthy is displaying in his WRs 4 and 5, to Jordy's detriment in terms of snaps.

I picked up Jones this week. Actually dropped Cobb to get him. Jones has always had the physical skills, to get separation and be a player.. in fact more gifted then Nelson IMO. However he has always been extremely inconsistent, and tons of drops last year

It seems that Jones may have corrected some of these mistakes this year.. or at least that is my hope as a GB homer.. Been very impressed the last 2 weeks. he is getting a lot of looks, and not dropping passes. Maybe his lack of offers in the FA market this off-season, along with Cobb sigining have put the right kind of pressure on him to correct his mistakes. In some ways he is playing for the future FA market, since I doubt GB rosters Nelson, Jones and Cobb beyond this year or maybe next.

I think Nelson and Jones are 2a and 2b in this passing game right now, and would not be surprised to see this continue if Jones continues to perform. Both have passed Driver, who is acting statesman on the team, but lacks the physical skills anymore

I am also surprised that Finley is getting fewer looks than first part of last year. Rogers is looking more at his WR than in previous years. I also read that Packers WR have reduced drops by 50% over last year. If that continues, I think Finley will remain a 4th option, post solid, but not elite #'s

I also agree that Cobb is a great talent. However unless Jones or Nelson falter (or injury), I am not sure he will get the looks to be rostered... This year

There are three starting WR on this team plus Finley. Cobb is the perfect upside handcuff for Jennings, Nelson or Jones, if you're into handcuffing WR. This is the perfect situation for it.Cobb is one injury (Jennings w/a bad groin) or mental mistake by Jones/Jordy away from being on the field with Aaron Rodgers. That said he's also a rookie who is bound to make his own mental errors. But sheer talent wise, Jennings > Cobb > Jones > Nelson, so look out if this kid finds his way onto the field more. He may force someone else off if things click for him. Driver is already out of the way for all of them IMO. A coach on the field now.

The Packers don't need Cobb's athleticism, they have Jennings, Finley, Jones and Nelson- those 4 are plenty athletic. The Packers need players to run correct routes and Cobb won't get more than a handful of snaps a game until he has that figured out. If it happens this year it will probably be late in the season.

Revisiting the JordyVS Jones debate. The last 3 weeks Jones seems to have improved.Jordy Nelson wr 2011 -14 targets 9 rec 1 TD 173 ydsJames Jones wr 2011 -12 10 2 TD's 238 ydsJones's drops seem to have stopped. Maybe being left behind helped but he used to at about 50% receptions but is now at 83%. He should be start-able in a pinch.
